The Coalition to Reform Our Legislature (CROL) will hold a people\u2019s hearing on two bills, filed by its members and allies, which would improve the way that our legislature operates. The bills were filed consistent with House and Senate rules, yet both chambers bypassed the typical process of holding formal hearings on them, leaving the public in the dark on their benefits.<\/p>\n

CROL is a politically diverse coalition of groups and individuals committed to\u00a0making the Massachusetts legislature more accountable, effective, and transparent. \u00a0CROL\u00a0proposed\u00a0two bills\u00a0to accomplish those objectives.\u00a0 One bill would establish independent legislative research and fiscal analysis bureaus\u00a0to provide legislators with the\u00a0tools\u00a0necessary to\u00a0craft\u00a0legislation based on objective data, rather than reliance on special interests.<\/p>\n

The second bill would reform the stipend system which presently gives leadership extraordinary control over legislators\u2019 salaries, replacing it with a less costly and less leadership-controlled stipend system that rewards performance, rather than loyalty. CROL is holding this hearing to advance public debate\u00a0on our dysfunctional legislature.<\/p>\n
