Tropical Cyclone Fina is gradually making its way towards the Northern Territory coast, with expectations to strengthen into a category 2 cyclone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for several areas, including Darwin, the Tiwi Islands, Dundee Beach to Warruwi, as well as inland locations such as Batchelor, Cobourg Peninsula, Minjilang, Gunbalanya, Pirlangimpi, Milikapiti, and Wurrumiyanga. These regions are anticipated to experience the storm\u2019s significant impact.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Rainfall in these areas could reach up to 300mm, raising concerns about potential flash flooding in the Tiwi Islands and several rivers, including the Finniss, Adelaide, Mary, Wildman, South Alligator, East Alligator, and Goomadeer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The last time Darwin faced a cyclone of this strength was in 2018 with Tropical Cyclone Marcus, which also struck as a category 2 storm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As Cyclone Fina draws nearer, here is the latest information available.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Currently, Fina is categorized as a category 1 storm after being downgraded yesterday. It is generating damaging winds that reach speeds of 85 km\/h, with gusts peaking at 120 km\/h.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting the system will strengthen to category 2 later tonight.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is forecast to bring destructive winds with gusts up to 164km\/h, which can bring down trees and power lines and damage homes. \u00ef\u00bb\u00bf<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Fina will continue travelling as a category 2 when it passes through Darwin this weekend. \u00ef\u00bb\u00bf<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The cyclone will intensify again to a category 3 storm as it moves away from the coast to the southern Timor Sea by Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Bureau of Meteorology, however, warns there is a chance that it could reach category 3 earlier, during late today or early tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Where is \u00ef\u00bb\u00bfTropical Cyclone Fina now?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Fina was tracked about 110 kilometres north north-east of Minjilang and 325 kilometres north-east of Darwin.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It is slowly travelling south-east towards the Northern Territory coast and is forecast to approach the Cobourg Peninsula and Tiwi Islands tonight.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Fina will continue through Darwin and the Van Diemen Gulf tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The impacts of the storm, however, are already being felt now with showers and winds lashing the Top End. \u00ef\u00bb\u00bf<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What are the warnings in place?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n

\u00ef\u00bb\u00bfThe Northern Territory Emergency Service advises residents between \u00ef\u00bb\u00bfCape Don to Minjiling to finish their preparations now and be prepared to shelter in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Residents on the \u00ef\u00bb\u00bfTiwi Islands, and between Dundee Beach to Warruwi, including the Cobourg Peninsula, Darwin and Batchelor, are urged to immediately begin or finish preparations, particularly securing boats and property.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Those between \u00ef\u00bb\u00bfWadeye and Dundee Beach should consider what they may need to do if the cyclone threat increases.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Darwin Airport is now closed as of yet, but precautionary safety measures are in place across the precinct.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe safety of those who work at Darwin Airport, the travelling public, and the wider community remains our highest priority,\u201d the airport said in a statement. \u00ef\u00bb\u00bf<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Darwin Airport is monitoring the situation and advises passengers to check directly with their airlines for the latest information regarding their flights.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201c\u00ef\u00bb\u00bfAirlines will continue to provide the most accurate and timely information,\u201d the airport said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Virgin has cancelled services to and from Melbourne tonight and services to and from Brisbane tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The airline is reaching out to affected passengers and advising passengers travelling on Sunday and early next week to monitor the status of their flight. \u00ef\u00bb\u00bf<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

All Qantas flights are currently operating as normal, but the airline is monitoring the evolving situation.\u00ef\u00bb\u00bf<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Chief Minister \u00ef\u00bb\u00bfLia Finocchiaro has shut four remote schools today: Mamaruni School, Warruwi School, Milikapiti School and Pularumpi School.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Non-government schools in these areas can be contacted to confirm whether they will be open.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Secure NT said carers of school-aged children and vulnerable residents should now be released to attend to their carer responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
