There\u2019s quite a bit of catching up to do following our recent
\nvoyage into the Atlantic<\/b> ocean, although this current post might, if I pitch it
\ncorrectly, cover a lot of ground. Depending on how it turns out we might find
\none post seamlessly leading straight into another, although there\u2019s no
\nguaranteed as to how things turn out. We shall have to wait and see, but in the
\nmeantime let\u2019s kick off with a visit to Tonbridge\u2019s<\/b> premier alehouse, the
\nNelson Arms.<\/b>\u00a0I called in, sometime after 2pm<\/b> on Sunday,<\/b> ostensibly in
\nsearch of Harvey\u2019s November 5th<\/sup><\/b> offering, Bonfire Boy. <\/b>It turned out
\nI was a session too late, and unsurprisingly this seasonal offering, had sold
\nout. Plan B<\/b> was to try the Green Hop<\/b> beer from Gun Brewery,<\/b> alongside the
\nPorter,<\/b> from Kent Brewery. <\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Somewhat uncharacteristically, I ordered a half of
\neach beer, rather than a pint, but in the case of the latter offering, I was
\nglad that I did, as I\u2019m sorry to report that it was one of the worst beers I
\nhave ever tasted. It wasn\u2019t off, cloudy, or on the turn, but it was unbalanced,
\nand dominated by a very astringent aftertaste, that was quite unpalatable and really
\nunpleasant.\u00a0I couldn\u2019t even force myself to drink it, but with no
\nsuitable plant pots to pour the unwanted beer into, I handed it back to the barman
\nand asked him to tip it away. It\u2019s very unusual for me not to be able to finish
\na beer, but there was no point in struggling with a beer I couldn\u2019t stomach.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I must admit, I\u2019ve never been a fan of Kent Brewery<\/b> beers,
\nbut as they keep cropping up, particularly in the Nelson<\/b>, I was starting to think,
\nup until this incident, that it was me who was at fault, rather than the
\nbrewery. My replacement was a half pint of QPA, <\/b>a session pale ale from
\nQuantock Brewery.<\/b> This beer was perfectly acceptable, as was the Green Hop Pale<\/b>
\nfrom Gun Brewery.<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The latter was the first Green Hop<\/b> beer I\u2019ve sampled so far
\nthis year, and this brings me on to the second thread of this post, namely from
\nbeing everywhere one looked, 10 years ago,<\/b> to being both rare and hard to find,
\nin 2025<\/b>. It\u2019s probably no exaggeration to say that in these straightened times,
\nan increasing number of breweries are finding them too difficult to brew \u2013
\ngiven the time restraints associated with GHA\u2019s<\/b>, and the lack of appreciation
\nfrom the drinking public who never really got the point of them. Consequently,
\napart from in specialised outlets, these seasonal beers are increasingly
\ndifficult to come across.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

How things have changed for Green Hop Ales<\/b> since I first
\nwrote about them in 2015,<\/b> detailing exactly what they are, and what it is about
\nthem that makes them so unique. \u00a0<\/span>The
\ngeneral public (but not readers of this, or other beer blogs), often wrongly
\nbelieve that beer is brewed from hops whereas, as most of us know, beer is brewed
\nfrom malted barley (sometimes with the addition of other cereals), with hops
\nproviding the \u201cseasoning\u201d.<\/i><\/b> Hops impart tanginess, bitterness plus aroma, and they
\nalso act as a preservative in the finished product. That\u2019s cleared up that
\nurban myth, so now onto the more important stuff, such as the difference between
\nnormal and green hop beers.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Hops are normally dried, prior to being used in brewing, in
\norder to preserve their important flavouring characteristics, and to ensure the
\nharvested crop lasts throughout the year. Green Hop Beer<\/b> though, is made
\nwith fresh, or \u201cgreen\u201d,<\/i><\/b> hops that are used as soon as possible after harvesting
\nand ideally within 12 hours of being picked. The resulting beers have a
\ncharacteristic fresh taste because the green hops used contain oils and other
\naroma compounds that are normally lost when hops are dried.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The very first Green
\nHop Ales (GHA\u2019s),<\/b> were of necessity experimental, as no one really knew how
\nmany hops needed to be added at the start of the brewing process, or how the
\nfinished product would turn out. Contrast this with normal dried hops where, from
\nexperience gained over many years, the brewer knows the correct weight of hops
\nto be added to each brew, in order to achieve the desired result and a
\nconsistent end product.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Many of the original GHA\u2019s <\/b>were unbalanced and, to
\nput it mildly, rather over-hopped! I remember some of these beers possessing a rich resinous taste, alongside an
\nalmost oily texture, which often meant you could actually feel the hops oils
\ncoating your tongue and the roof of your mouth. Over the years, brewers began
\nmaking compensation for the resinous feel of their GHA\u2019s<\/b><\/span>,<\/b> and if you
\ntake a look back at the many posts about Green Hop<\/b> beers that I wrote over the years,
\nyou can almost feel these beers becoming less and less astringent, oily and
\noverly bitter. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The inevitable result has been GHA\u2019s <\/b>that taste less
\nand less like something special, and more and more mainstream. This was
\ncertainly my feeling when I knocked back that glass of Gun Green Hop Pale,<\/b> and
\nI believe it is the experience of many other beer drinkers who once raved over GHA\u2019s<\/b>
\nbut now view them as no different from \u201cnormal\u201d<\/i><\/b> beers. It\u2019s almost as if the pendulum
\nhas moved full-swing, and has now, become an increasingly meaningless marketing
\nexercise, along the lines of Beaujolais Nouveau.\u00a0<\/b>I imagine that brewers, and hop growers up and down the
\ncounty, will be relieved at not being tied into the tight timetable that
\ngoverns the production of green hop beers; a schedule that is constrained by
\nhaving to keep their brewing operations on stand-by, whilst waiting for that
\nphone call from the hop grower that says, \u201cWe\u2019re harvesting, tomorrow.\u201d<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It was fun whilst it lasted, and those mid-September<\/b> train
\nrides over to Canterbury<\/b>, sampling a range of mainly Kent<\/b> GHA\u2019s<\/b>, in the warm,
\nearly autumn sunshine of the city\u2019s Dane John Gardens<\/b>, are now just a distant
\nmemory. If further proof was needed that the whole Green Hop<\/b> thing has turned
\nfull circle, the Kent Green Hop Festival<\/b> is no longer the countywide event that
\nit was 10, or even 5 years ago. Instead, it has morphed into a series of local events,
\nhosted either by the brewers themselves or, more usually, those pubs still
\nbanging the gong for GHA\u2019s.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The final part of that mythical thread I was talking about at
\nthe beginning of this piece, concerns Untappd,<\/b> and the fact that put simply, this beer ticking App does not lie. How do I know this? Well, the three beers that I sampled at the Nelson <\/b>last Sunday <\/b>were all beers that I\u2019d sampled previously. This was despite
\nme thinking they were new ones. I found this out when I attempted to score them
\non Untappd<\/b>, only to find that I\u2019d ticked them before. That includes Kent
\nBrewery Porter<\/b>, which I awarded a reasonable score of 3.75. <\/b>Perhaps something went
\nwrong with the latest brew, or perhaps I was just having an off day, but with reasonable
\nscores for the other two beers I enjoyed that day, I suspect not.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

As for the Nelson<\/b> itself,
\nthe pub was doing a healthy trade in Sunday lunches<\/b>, and it wasn\u2019t until one group
\nof diners left that I was able to get a seat. Good news then, and proof if your
\noffering is good, people will keep coming back for more, but to really satisfy
\nme, how about another cask of Harvey\u2019s Bonfire Boy,<\/b> or, in a few weeks\u2019 time, a
\ncask of the brewery\u2019s legendary Christmas Ale.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
