Quoting Matthew 23:23, the judge stressed the weightier matters of \u201cjudgment, mercy, and faith,\u201d adding that \u201clife is sacred to God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite describing Kanu as \u201carrogant, cocky, and full of himself\u201d and expressing concern over what the court called his persistent \u201ctendency of violence,\u201d the judge said the decision to forgo the death penalty was informed by shifting global norms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9xomODU6YT\">https:\/\/t.co\/9xomODU6YT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Consequently, Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment on counts 1, 4, 5, and 6. For count 7, the court imposed a 20-year prison term without the option of a fine, and an additional 5-year term without the option of a fine on another count.<\/p>\n<p>All sentences are to run concurrently.<\/p>\n<p>The court noted that the offences bordered on terrorism and that Kanu\u2019s behaviour \u2014 even during proceedings \u2014 reinforced its conclusion about his propensity for violence.<\/p>\n<p>His conduct on the morning of the sentencing, according to the judge, included \u201cexpressing violence\u201d and nearly assaulting security officers.<\/p>\n<p>While delivering the verdict, the judge reiterated that although the defendant\u2019s behavior was condemnable, justice must be dispensed with a measure of mercy.<\/p>\n<p>SaharaReporters had reported that the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday convicted the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on count one of the charges against him after holding that Kanu did not enter a defence or offer any explanation to counter the prosecution\u2019s evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering the ruling, Justice James Omotosho had stated that the prosecution\u2019s case stood unchallenged following Kanu\u2019s refusal to properly present a defence and his removal from the courtroom earlier in the day over repeated unruly behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis court, therefore, holds that the prosecution has established count one beyond reasonable doubt,\u201d the judge declared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsequently, the defendant is hereby convicted in respect of count one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SaharaReporters earlier reported that Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered that proceedings \u2014 including the delivery of judgment \u2014 would continue in the absence of Nnamdi Kanu, citing the IPOB leader\u2019s persistent \u201cunruly behaviour\u201d in the courtroom.<\/p>\n<p>The Court also convicted the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on all counts of charges levelled against him, including the count two of the terrorism charges filed against him, ruling that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The offence, under Section 16 of the Terrorism Prevention Act 2013, carries a punishment of death or life imprisonment upon conviction.<\/p>\n<p>In his judgment, Justice James Omotosho held that Kanu\u2019s declaration of a \u201csit-at-home\u201d order across the Southeast \u2014accompanied by threats and enforced through violence \u2014 amounted to a terrorist act.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t<input type=\"text\" id=\"short-post-url\" value=\"emeraldloaded.net\/?p=63579\" data-url=\"https:\/\/emeraldloaded.net\/?p=63579\"\/><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"copy-post-url\" class=\"button\">Copy URL<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<span id=\"copy-post-url-msg\" style=\"display:none;\">URL Copied<\/span>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ustice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court Abuja on Wednesday sentenced leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after condemning what it described as his \u201catrocious\u201d actions.
