The acquisition \u201cadvances\u201d Verizon\u2019s ability to offer high-speed internet in apartments, condominiums, and other multi-dwelling units, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.verizon.com%2Fabout%2Fnews%2Fverizon-acquisition-starry\" rel=\"sponsored\">said on Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Starry made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/5\/9\/11613912\/starry-station-router-wi-fi-network-review\">its debut in Boston in 2016<\/a>, offering gigabit speeds via its unconventional approach to internet connectivity. Instead of carrying connectivity across a web of wires \u2014 which are expensive and time-consuming to deploy \u2014 Starry beams its internet service from a larger antenna into homes via high-speed, short-range mmWave broadcasts. The challenge with those broadcasts is that Starry connections generally require an uninterrupted line of sight between the transmitter and the receiver, as mmWave signals can be easily blocked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">In recent years, Starry has run into trouble, with the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/20\/23414925\/starry-layoffs-500-workers-50-percent-wireless-isp\">laying off half of its workers in 2022<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/20\/23414925\/starry-layoffs-500-workers-50-percent-wireless-isp\">filing for bankruptcy in 2023<\/a>. It also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fierce-network.com\/wireless\/starry-plans-exit-ohio-market\">pulled out of one of its markets<\/a>, Columbus, Ohio, leaving Starry with nearly 100,000 customers across Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">It sounds like Starry\u2019s tech will end up getting used by Verizon. Through the acquisition, Verizon plans on expanding its ability to deliver internet connectivity in urban locations, building on its 5G home internet and growing fiber footprint. \u201cVerizon is uniquely positioned to accelerate this expansion because of its significant fiber backbone and extensive holdings of mmWave spectrum,\u201d the company said in its press release.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Verizon expects the deal to close in 2026, subject to regulatory approval. The Federal Communications Commission signed off on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/668614\/verizon-frontier-acquisition-fcc-approval\">Verizon\u2019s $20 billion acquisition<\/a> of fiber internet provider Frontier in May after Verizon agreed to drop its diversity, equity, and inclusivity policies. Verizon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/792875\/verizon-dan-schulman-ceo-hans-vestberg-replacement\">also just appointed a new CEO<\/a> this week: longtime PayPal head Dan Schulman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cStarry has demonstrated a unique and efficient approach to delivering high-speed internet in complex MDU [multi-dwelling unit] environments,\u201d Joe Russo, Verizon\u2019s EVP and president of global networks and technology, said. \u201cThis architecture is less expensive to build, quicker to deploy, and uniquely addresses the complexities of urban settings where we can leverage our existing fiber and mmWave assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Verizon is acquiring Starry, the ISP that delivers home internet using antennas and millimeter wave technology.
