Book Discussion of James <\/i>by Percival Everett\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fourteen of us met on Saturday Sept. 6<\/span>th<\/span><\/span> to discuss <\/span>James<\/span> by Percival Everett. <\/span>This 2024<\/span> novel is a retelling <\/span>of <\/span><\/span>The<\/span> Adventures of <\/span>Huck<\/span>leberry<\/span> Finn<\/span><\/span> by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemmons), but instead of coming from the perspective of Huck Finn, this novel is written from the perspective of James. James is literate, clever, intelligent, caring, and loves his wife and daughter. <\/span>What\u2019s<\/span> more, is that he has <\/span>a strong sense<\/span> of self. <\/span>He\u2019s<\/span> confident <\/span>in his personhood and has educated himself by reading the books in Judge Thatcher\u2019s library.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Where <\/span>The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn<\/span> and <\/span>James<\/span> describe the <\/span>misadventures of Huck and Jim\/James <\/span>rowing down the Mississippi River and foraging and fishing for food,<\/span><\/span> James<\/span> is not a chronicle of boyhood adventures. <\/span>The character James, in this book, is not boyish at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Robin<\/span> started us off by saying that a friend of hers <\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> like this novel. <\/span>It seems that the reason<\/span> had to do with the lack of dialec<\/span>t in this <\/span>story<\/span>. The original <\/span><\/span>Huck Finn<\/span> was <\/span>written in 1885 and was <\/span>filled with the character <\/span>\u201c<\/span>______<\/span>Jim<\/span>\u201d <\/span>s<\/span>peaking in<\/span> ignorant sounding dialect. <\/span>Robin\u2019s friend said that <\/span>Mark Twain had spent countless hours perfecting this dialect<\/span> for his book<\/span>, and <\/span>thought <\/span>it was <\/span>disrespectful for Percival Everett to not include it in <\/span>his<\/span> book. <\/span>Robin did point out that she felt Everett paid homage to Clemmons\u2019 work with the lessons on how to talk \u2018slave language<\/span>,<\/span>\u2019<\/span> such as, <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

p.2<\/span>3<\/span> \u201cThe children said together,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u2018And the better they feel, the <\/span>safer we are.\u2019<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u2018February<\/span>, translate that.\u2019<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2018Da <\/span>mo<\/span>\u2019 betta <\/span>dey<\/span> feels, da <\/span>mo<\/span>\u2019 safer we be.\u2019<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the discussion, Cruz <\/span>stated<\/span> that she never read <\/span><\/span>The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn<\/span>. This book, <\/span>James,<\/span> won the <\/span>Barnes and Nobles Book of the Year in 2024<\/span>. (<\/span><\/span>James<\/span> also won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction<\/span>, <\/span>in addition to the <\/span>the<\/span> Stowe Prize for Literary Activism.<\/span>) <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Cruz continued, <\/span>\u201c<\/span>I like the fact that Percival Everett <\/span>wrote<\/span> the book and gave James a name. I like <\/span>the revenge<\/span>. Someone was killed because he had stolen a pencil<\/span>. It infuriated me that Judge Thatcher questioned James\u2019 speech.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ann followed up with, <\/span>\u201cI<\/span> was <\/span>very impressed<\/span>. <\/span>James understood himself and others<\/span>, which<\/span> gave him <\/span>the power<\/span> to strategize. There was a huge amount of suffering and so many experiences of loss<\/span> in the story.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Janice added, <\/span>\u201cI read James when it first came out. I was so excited when Percival Everett received an <\/span>honorary degree at Wesleyan. I started to re-read <\/span><\/span>The Adventures of <\/span>Huc<\/span>kleberry Finn <\/span><\/span>to <\/span>refamiliarize myself with the story. <\/span>The book <\/span><\/span>James <\/span>did great homage to the enslaved. I love seeing <\/span>Huckleberry Finn<\/span> from <\/span>a different perspective<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Maria remarked that she had<\/span> \u201calso <\/span>read it previously for another book club. James is so smart. He was the problem solver in every situation. <\/span>It\u2019s<\/span> truly an adventure book.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Bonnie said she <\/span>also <\/span>never <\/span>read <\/span><\/span>the <\/span>Adventures<\/span> of Huckleberry Finn<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>What I liked best is <\/span>James\u2019 view about religion<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

p. 90 \u201cI appreciated Voltaire\u2019s notion of tolerance<\/span> <\/span>regarding<\/span> religious <\/span>difference,<\/span> and I understood, as absorbed as I was, that I was not interested in the content of the work, but<\/span> its structure, the movement of it, the calling out of logical fallacies. And so, <\/span>after these books, the Bible itself was the least interesting of all. I could not enter it, did not want to enter it, and then understood that I recognized it as a tool of my enemy. I chose the word <\/span><\/span>enemy<\/span>, and still do, as <\/span>oppr<\/span>essor <\/span><\/span>necessarily supposes a victim.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bonnie continued, \u201c<\/span>There\u2019s<\/span> something called the Jefferson Bible. Percival Everett wrote the introduction to <\/span>one of the recent editions of the Jefferson Bible. \u201c<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Yes, Percival Everett wrote an introduction for a 2004 paperback edition of <\/span>The Jefferson Bible<\/span>, published by Akashic Books<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span> <\/span>Instead of a traditional foreword, Everett’s introduction features an imagined conversation between himself and Thomas Jefferson. In this dialogue, Everett interrogates the contradictions between Jefferson’s moral code and his personal actions, such as his ownership of slaves.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kai,<\/span> who had never <\/span>attended<\/span> one of these discussions<\/span> and was <\/span>basically sitting<\/span> in to <\/span>ob<\/span>serve<\/span>, shared<\/span>, \u201c<\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> the only one here who <\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> read <\/span><\/span>James<\/span>. <\/span>But I can say that my grandfather lived through slavery. He ended up graduating from the Tuskegee Institute. He was <\/span>very <\/span>intelligent<\/span>,<\/span> but he still had to wear \u2018the mask\u2019 (appearing subservient, not too bright,) in public. <\/span>There are people today, having lived in Mississippi and Louisiana, who still put on that mask. <\/span>I <\/span>don\u2019t<\/span> <\/span>know if<\/span>\u00a0Percival Everett <\/span>ever lived in the rural south, yet he can relate to James\/Jim.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As a matter of fact<\/span>, Everett grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, <\/span>definitely<\/span> in<\/span> the South, but perhaps not so rural. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Iesha told us that she never read Huck Finn, and she <\/span>hasn\u2019t<\/span> finished James in its entirety, but she responded, \u201cI appreciate the author fo<\/span>r giving us a portrait of someone enslaved as intelligent in text. Usually, the enslaved are portrayed as ignorant. As humans, <\/span>we<\/span>\u2019re<\/span> made to grow, to learn, to want more. He said to Miss Watson, \u201cWhat would I be doing with <\/span>a book?\u201d Not only was he clever enough to educate himself in Judge Watson\u2019s library, but he also knew enough to make the idea of him educating himself sound ridiculous.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Janice added, \u201cNot only was he wise <\/span>enough<\/span> to <\/span>say,<\/span> \u2018What would I be doing with a book?\u2019 He taught the child<\/span>ren to say what<\/span>ever <\/span>the white people wanted to hear. <\/span>\u201c\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Judy shared that she read Huck Finn first. \u201cI remember how kind Jim and Huck were to each other. In James, I wondered how James <\/span>became so smart as an enslaved person, but then I remembered that there were always smart enslaved people. There were three distinct petitions written by the enslaved as early as the 17<\/span>00s.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

1. Belinda Sutton’s petitions for reparations (1780s). <\/span>Which she won<\/span>. <\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

2.A “Great Number of Blackes” petition for freedom (<\/span>1774)<\/span> <\/span>Massachusetts<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

3. The New Haven enslaved people’s petition (1788) New Haven, CT\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The biggest difference between <\/span>The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn<\/span> and <\/span>James<\/span>, besides the ending<\/span>,<\/span> is that in <\/span><\/span>Huck Finn<\/span>,<\/span> we only got Huck\u2019s perspective when Huck and James were apart from each other. In <\/span><\/span>James<\/span>, we get James\u2019 perspective when <\/span>he\u2019s<\/span> apart from Huck.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Shelara<\/span> went further, saying, \u201cThe enslaved people in this country <\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> begin in this country. Before their arrival here, they knew multiple <\/span>languages. They knew how to grow rice and indigo. They knew all about ironworking. The reason we think the opposite is true <\/span>i<\/span>s purp<\/span>osed. <\/span>I guess this<\/span> is why Percival Everett <\/span>wrote<\/span> this book. In<\/span><\/span> The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn<\/span>, Jim is a caricature. The enslaved had to li<\/span>ve a double life.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kai, <\/span>agreeing with this, said<\/span>. “My<\/span> grandfather always said, \u2018They didn\u2019t see us.\u2019 The implication is that you can rise higher right in front<\/span> of them. There was an assumption in Black families that their children would go higher<\/span>, even if that ambition had to be concealed.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Shelara<\/span> also added, \u201cWe have free public education in this country because after <\/span>emancipation<\/span>, the newly freed people wanted education. Laws w<\/span>ere passed to educate the full community, for both Black and white people. \u201c<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Laura, <\/span>referring<\/span> to the lessons in \u2018slave language,\u2019 reminds her of \u2018the talk,\u2019 <\/span>that African American parents give their children on how to speak and act around the police.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Somehow, <\/span>the group<\/span> stumbled into the debate as to whether Huck was racist or not. Bonnie called our attention to p. 25<\/span>7<\/span>, where James <\/span>recognizes the bond between him and Huck.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

p.25<\/span>7<\/span> <\/span>\u201cI<\/span> looked at the boy\u2019s face and I could see that he had feelings for me and that was the root of his anger. H<\/span>e had always felt affection for me, if not actual love. He had always looked to me for protection, even when he thought he was trying to protect me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Janice, considering that passage, said she <\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> think Huck was racist at a<\/span>ll and he was always uncomfortable when they met strangers, and Huck would have to say, <\/span>\u201cJames is my slave,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>as<\/span> opposed to \u201cJames is my friend.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Shelara<\/span>, pushing back against this, said, \u201c<\/span>I think that many white people<\/span> have that one Black person that they love, but that <\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span> mean <\/span>they\u2019re<\/span> not racist.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Barbara M. remarked, \u201cIt was\/is convenient for white people to see the enslaved as flat. They <\/span>wouldn\u2019t<\/span> have been so ea<\/span>sily able to oppress them if they saw the enslaved as complex humans.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Shelara<\/span> reminded us that, \u201cA<\/span><\/span>t the end of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,<\/span> Jim is freed, but Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn trick <\/span>Jim, and <\/span>don\u2019t<\/span> let him know that he is free.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Bonnie got right to <\/span>the heart of the matter<\/span>, saying, \u201cIf the enslavers were so <\/span>gung-ho<\/span> on<\/span> <\/span>white supremacy, why were they so concerned about keeping the enslaved from learning to read?\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

James<\/span> answers this question by citing the power that reading gives, that power <\/span>is magnified once the reader realizes that he has something to contribute <\/span>to the written canon as well.<\/span> <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Once James got hold of a pencil and paper, he wrote the following: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
