\n I entered Nepal for the Gadhimai Festival, where tens of thousands were killed. Pressed by crowds and threats, I refused to be silenced.\n <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve witnessed <\/strong>the world\u2019s largest animal sacrifice<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Nepal\u2019s Gadhimai Festival, tens of thousands of animals are killed every five years in the name of tradition.<\/p>\n

Buffaloes are hacked to death with machetes. Goats are decapitated. Tears run down animals\u2019 faces as they wait their turns to die.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The ground runs red. Severed heads still blink. Bodies are scattered as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n

Since 2014, I\u2019ve crossed from India\u2014where most of these animals are taken from\u2014into Nepal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That first year, Animal Equality had just helped ban animal transport across the border.\u00a0<\/p>\n

My team was stationed at checkpoints to assist law enforcement and stop smugglers.<\/p>\n

Not everyone welcomed us.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Outside a border patrol office in a region known for unrest, a crowd closed in around me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dozens pressed in as tension rose, insisting sacrifice was their \u201ctradition.\u201d One wrong move, and the crowd could have erupted.<\/p>\n

I told one man I\u2019d only speak if the others stepped back. He agreed, the crowd parted, and I slipped away.<\/p>\n

That same year, police trailed my team from checkpoint to checkpoint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After the festival ended, we found out why.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They had feared for our safety and had been ordered to protect us.<\/p>\n

While some officers guarded us, others turned hostile.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

At one checkpoint, an official sexually assaulted me as I leaned into a vehicle to check for smuggled animals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I spun around and demanded\u2013before the crowd\u2013that he stay away from me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I stood tall, gathered myself, and kept pressing onward.<\/p>\n

Every festival since, the attempts to silence us have grown. Higher walls around the buffalo enclosure. Smoke released to blind our cameras. Officials beating our team.<\/p>\n

After each attempt at censorship, we became more determined. And it worked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since 2014, thousands fewer animals have been killed each year.<\/p>\n

But this censorship is bigger than Gadhimai.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It also shields factory farms, where animals die in even larger numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
