Kramer, Award Winning Casting Director \/ Producer<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>My journey into the world of\u00a0<b>Horror<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Sci-Fi<\/b>, and\u00a0<b>Fantasy<\/b>\u00a0began in childhood, evolving from a love of the genres into a career of acting, casting, and teaching. For the past\u00a0<b>16 years<\/b>, I\u2019ve had the privilege of teaching the Horror class and, for\u00a0<b>6 years<\/b>, the Sci-Fi\/Fantasy class at Actors Connection\u2014the only courses of their kind in the country. Over the years, countless actors have taken what they\u2019ve learned in these rooms and successfully applied it across all genres in film and television.<\/p>\n<p>And now, I want to share the core advice I offer actors when they come in to audition for me.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Your First Take: Show Me Your Creative Choices<\/h2>\n<p>Auditioning for these specific genres is a different beast entirely. When you walk into my room, I do not offer direction on the first take. Why?\u00a0<b>I don\u2019t want to squash your creative ideas.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I want to see the choices you\u2019ve made, how you use the space, and the energetic connection you bring. Your preparation is your chance to show me what you think this character and scene need.\u00a0<b>Don\u2019t be afraid to take chances; I can always pull you back.<\/b><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Master the Space: Physicality and Energy<\/h2>\n<p>Using the audition space is crucial. If you are auditioning\u00a0<b>live<\/b>, it\u2019s always wise to ask:\u00a0<b>\u201cHow much space am I allowed to use?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to see an actor merely standing still. Even for less-physical roles, I want to see how you use the space, whether it\u2019s\u00a0<b>physically<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0<b>energetically<\/b>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Live Auditions:<\/b>\u00a0Utilize your allowed space to convey the character\u2019s state. Movement helps bring these heightened worlds to life.<\/li>\n<li><b>Self-Tapes:<\/b>\u00a0Given the limited space, be less physical. Movements that work live often don\u2019t translate well on a self-tape camera and can appear distracting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Attire: Suggestion, Not Full Costume<\/h2>\n<p>I generally dislike full costumes in an audition\u2014they often distract from the performance. However, for\u00a0<b>Horror<\/b>, I appreciate a simple\u00a0<b>suggestion<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if applicable, a\u00a0<b>light application of blood on the clothes<\/b>\u00a0can signal your commitment to the character and genre.\u00a0<b>(Remember: a suggestion of blood, not a bucket full!)<\/b>\u00a0A little bit of creativity goes a long way, but never let your wardrobe choice overshadow your performance.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>The Power of Silences and Energy<\/h2>\n<p>Often, an actor is brought in because they already look the part. While the delivery of the lines is key to closing the deal, your audition is your opportunity to show us something we may not have considered\u2014<b>through your choices.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s critical to consider the type of film you\u2019re auditioning for. If it\u2019s something\u00a0<b>cerebral<\/b>, the physicality may not be as necessary. But what\u00a0<i>does<\/i>\u00a0come into play are the\u00a0<b>silences<\/b>\u00a0and the energy that fills the space\u00a0<i>in between<\/i>the dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>This is where my background as an energetic body healer and clairvoyant medium informs my work. The\u00a0<b>silences<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>energy<\/b>\u00a0play a huge part in my assessment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Can I hear the silences?<\/b>\u00a0Do they create tension or tell a story?<\/li>\n<li><b>Do I feel your energy connecting with me?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the audition process, I am less concerned with the technical perfection of the words and more focused on your\u00a0<b>connection to the character<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0<b>underlying truth of the scene<\/b>.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>The Final Word: Commit and Enjoy the Ride<\/h2>\n<p>You were invited to the party. You have the look, you have the talent, now you just need the conviction.<\/p>\n<p>My final piece of advice is simple:\u00a0<b>Don\u2019t be afraid to take chances.<\/b>\u00a0You were invited to the audition because we believe you\u00a0<i>could<\/i>\u00a0be the one. So commit fully to your choices, show us your unique vision, and\u00a0<b>enjoy the ride!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Pamela S.
