In the over 11<br \/>\nyears I have kept this book-review blog I have enjoyed countless books, but<br \/>\nvery few have coalesced knowledge and wisdom in my brain like <i>The Origin of<br \/>\nConsciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind <\/i>has.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a masterpiece of insight and research.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Jaynes divides his work<br \/>\ninto three \u201cbooks,\u201d the first one dealing with consciousness itself, what it<br \/>\nis, and where it comes from.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This alone<br \/>\nis enough material for a great book.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The<br \/>\nfirst great insight that the author shares involves consciousness itself.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We modern humans assume that our brains work<br \/>\nin the same manner as all early humans.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>We have an internal \u201cI,\u201d designating an interior head-space that exists<br \/>\noutside of time and place, and which us modern humans see as our true selves,<br \/>\nour internal monologue.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jaynes central<br \/>\nproposition is that this internal \u201cI, this sense of individual consciousness,<br \/>\nonly arose in humanity after the invention of written language.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Before this time, humans lived in what Jaynes<br \/>\nterms a \u201cbicameral mind.\u201d<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>To explain what<br \/>\n\u201cbicameral mind\u201d refers to, I must go into a bit of neurology and brain<br \/>\nstructure.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We humans have essentially<br \/>\ntwo separate brains, connected through several channels, (the corpus-callosum<br \/>\nis the main one, a bundle of nerves which allow signals to be sent from one<br \/>\nbrain hemisphere to the other), allowing them to communicate with each other,<br \/>\nand to control different aspects of life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>For example, our left hemisphere contains Brocka\u2019s and Wernicke\u2019s<br \/>\nareas.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These are two parts of our brain<br \/>\nthat handle language, with Brocka\u2019s area controlling speech production,<br \/>\nallowing our physical mouth and tongue to create meaningful words, and<br \/>\nWernicke\u2019s area handling the other end of speech, that being language<br \/>\ncomprehension, the mental understanding of the auditory signals received by our<br \/>\nears through spoken language.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In<br \/>\npatients who suffer from traumatic brain injuries, strokes, or other such<br \/>\nconditions, these areas are sometimes affected, which was the initial impetus<br \/>\nfor understanding the various sections of our brain.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Julian Jaynes posits<br \/>\nthat, before the advent of the written word, humanity lived in a very different<br \/>\nstate of mind, the bicameral mind, a consciousness completely unaware of<br \/>\nitself, quite the opposite of our current view of consciousness which we feel<br \/>\nexists independently of our physical being.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>For tens of thousands of years, humans lived in groups led by a<br \/>\n\u201cking.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These kings dictated how the<br \/>\npeople of a said group would live. The truly great and long-lived kings would<br \/>\nbe remembered long after their death, their words still echoing in their<br \/>\nfollower\u2019s heads.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was not seen as<br \/>\nan aberration.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Humans found it perfectly<br \/>\nlogical that a dead king would continue talking in their heads, as if still<br \/>\nalive. The greater the king, the longer the voice would live on in his<br \/>\nfollowers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As evidence of this, Julian<br \/>\nJaynes discusses how for over ten thousand years, human burials followed the<br \/>\nsame pattern.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The deceased was not seen<br \/>\nas dead, in the way we modern humans see things.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As long as their voice could be heard the<br \/>\nking was alive. Because of this, the dead were buried with food, clothing,<br \/>\ntools, and all sorts of items that would be useful to the dead person\u2019s continuing<br \/>\n\u201clife.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The high culture of the<br \/>\nEgyptians was the pinnacle of this thinking, with Pharaohs buried alongside<br \/>\ndozens of sacrificed slaves, wives, animals, etc.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their isolation in northeast Africa allowed<br \/>\nthem to maintain their bicameral culture the longest, even after the advent of<br \/>\nwritten language.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Julian Jaynes posits<br \/>\nthat the first gods were the dead kings whose voices and commands could still<br \/>\nbe heard in the people\u2019s heads.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This<br \/>\nmakes a lot of sense as ancestor worship is the oldest spiritual practice still<br \/>\nfound among us humans.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many of the<br \/>\noldest tribal cultures in the world today still observe a lengthy period<br \/>\nbetween when a person\u2019s body stops breathing and when they feel the person is<br \/>\ntruly dead and ready to be buried\/cremated\/etc.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>This same bicameral<br \/>\nstructure is evident in Mesoamerica, where dozens of city states sprung up,<br \/>\nflourished, and died over millennia.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>These cities are all remarkably similar, containing a large central<br \/>\npyramid of structure housing the king, and in later times, the statue of the<br \/>\nlocal god.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Everything about their lives<br \/>\nwas dictated by the king\/god-king\/god, and sometimes the entire city-state<br \/>\nwould revert back to the jungle after the death of a prominent king.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Sometime around 2,500<br \/>\nyears ago, everything changed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In<br \/>\nMesopotamia, a writing system was created which altered our entire world and,<br \/>\naccording to Julian Jaynes, altered our brain\u2019s structure.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was cuneiform, a method of writing which<br \/>\ninvolves pressing a wooden stylus into wet clay, leaving triangular marks.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Cuneiform is not a language, but a system of<br \/>\nwriting, and due to this, it was used to write down things in Assyrian, Emetic,<br \/>\nAkkadian, and many other languages.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Essentially, once a remote king found that his proclamations could be<br \/>\nwritten down and shared without him needing to personally deliver the<br \/>\ninformation, he then asked his scholars to use cuneiform to write down his<br \/>\nproclamations, history, etc.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In this sense, writing<br \/>\nwas not what we think of today, words which, when read, create a narrative in<br \/>\nour minds.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Much like ancient temples,<br \/>\nstatuary, and religious artifacts initially did, writing allowed ancient humans<br \/>\nto hallucinate words and instructions, keeping the king\u2019s voice alive well past<br \/>\nhis death.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was an immensely valuable<br \/>\ntool for social control in a time before individual consciousness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>For millennia, humanity passed down its<br \/>\naccrued knowledge verbally, with specific people in each tribe\/group designated<br \/>\nto be the memory carriers, reciting long poems and stories from memory in order<br \/>\nto share wisdom and instructions with the next generation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These bards would not specifically memorize a<br \/>\ntext, for there was no texts back then.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>What they did was remember the salient points of a tale, concerning an<br \/>\nold god-king perhaps, and then add in connective language as they reiterated<br \/>\nthe story in question to a new audience. This way allowed the important points<br \/>\nto be learned by the audience, while also allowing the storyteller to shape his<br \/>\nstories, adding and subtracting parts as they saw fit to.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The written word changed<br \/>\nall of this.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Julian Jaynes recounts a<br \/>\nvery dark era in the history of our developing consciousness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The period of time, around 500-1000 years<br \/>\nafter the initial breakdown of the bicameral mind, sometime around 500 BC, was<br \/>\na time of dissolution, fear, and mass-violence.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Before the written language, civilizations lived near each other in<br \/>\nrelative peace, trading goods and food items, but generally just leaving each<br \/>\nother alone.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was understood that<br \/>\nother human groups followed their own gods\/kings, and that was good enough for<br \/>\nthem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Once writing appeared, the<br \/>\n\u201cvoices\u201d of the gods\/kings no longer reverberated through the people\u2019s minds,<br \/>\ncausing chaos, and uncertainty.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The idea<br \/>\nof an individual \u201cI\u201d was unnecessary before this, for everyone knew what their<br \/>\nrole was, what they were expected to do in life, and why they did it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The god-king\u2019s proclamations were followed<br \/>\nwithout question, for he spoke directly from the gods.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The bicameral mind did not seek explanations.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The written word quieted<br \/>\nthat internal voice that repeated the gods\/kings proclamations.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>City states became too large for easy control<br \/>\nof the population.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was at this time<br \/>\nthat specialists came into being, people whose breeding, training, or social<br \/>\nstatus prepared them to be interlocutors between the god and the people.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These were the beginnings of the sacerdotal<br \/>\nsects that we all currently deal with.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Even these methods were not enough to hold the homogeny, and the cities<br \/>\nslowly fell into ruin and disuse, as people moved back out into the wilds to<br \/>\nmake their own lives.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because of this,<br \/>\nthere was an extreme rise in violence and warfare.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Without the god\u2019s voices keeping everyone<br \/>\nsafe, neighbors were seen as violent, evil, \u201cother,\u201d etc., and the need to<br \/>\nexterminate them arose.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>During this turbulent<br \/>\nperiod, it is estimated that in both the western and eastern worlds, nearly 90%<br \/>\nof the human population was exterminated.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>This was wholesale genocide on a planetary level.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Humans are our own worst enemies.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a sad reminder that, even two thousand<br \/>\nyears later, our collective humanity can be quickly erased or forgotten when we<br \/>\nend up seeing our fellow beings as less than human because they do not believe<br \/>\nwhat we chose, or are told to, believe.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Julian Jaynes traces the<br \/>\ndevelopment of consciousness in man through our written works, the oldest ones<br \/>\nsuch as the Rigveda from what is now India or the Iliad, from Greece being<br \/>\nwritten at a time when the bicameral mind was still the norm among us<br \/>\nhumans.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In these tales, the human<br \/>\nprotagonists do not share their internal monologues.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They had no internal monologues.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their actions are not self-decided.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, all the actions in the Iliad, for<br \/>\nexample, are a result of a command or a suggestion by one of the many gods.<br \/>\nAchilles does not choose his actions.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>They are dictated by the gods.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The<br \/>\nsame holds for the characters in the Rigveda.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Bicameral man did not self-assess, self-doubt, or self-analyze.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He lived, breathed, and acted in accordance<br \/>\nwith the instructions provided him by the gods and spirits, voices we modern<br \/>\nhumans would describe as our internal monologue.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In the follow-up to the<br \/>\nIliad, the Odyssey, the protagonists do make their own decisions.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They worry and fret and flip-flop without any<br \/>\ncertainty, something lacking in the heroes of the Iliad.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They still do not have what we would call a<br \/>\nconsciousness, however.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is their own<br \/>\nconstituent parts that make demands.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Parts of the human, such as <i>phrenes<\/i>, <i>nous<\/i>, and <i>psyche<\/i>,<br \/>\nwere the ones dictating action.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Odysseus\u2019<br \/>\n<i>nous<\/i> might demand that he feel jealousy, or his <i>phrenes<\/i> might<br \/>\nstate that the gods do not agree.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Ancient man did not think of the brain itself as the seat of our<br \/>\nminds.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They saw different parts suited<br \/>\nto different things.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes these<br \/>\nwould still be associated with specific gods, or spirits, but they were<br \/>\ninternal to man, not external.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jaynes<br \/>\nexplains how today, we judge psychosomatic responses in people that would have<br \/>\nbeen very familiar to the people of the Odyssey.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When we are stressed out, our stomachs feel<br \/>\ncurdled, bile rises in our throat, and we get the \u201cbutterflies.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>To ancient man, just developing the faculty<br \/>\nof consciousness, this made sense.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When<br \/>\nscared, our heart starts beating faster.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Our blood pressure rises.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our<br \/>\nskin gets cold and tight.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ancient man<br \/>\nsaw this as evidence that the heart controlled certain emotions, much as the<br \/>\nstomach controlled others, and the bowels controlled even others.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is a wide gap between the mentality<br \/>\nevident in the Odyssey and the mentality seen in the Iliad.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The second section of<br \/>\nthis book details the progression from the Bicameral Mind to our current<br \/>\nconsciousness, tracing the history of our gods, temples and rituals associated<br \/>\nwith bicameral thinking. Jaynes describes how Mesopotamia was the first example<br \/>\nof modern consciousness, something which must have been very strange for those<br \/>\nfew humans who innately accepted their internal \u201cI\u201d.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even the tales in Genesis describe this<br \/>\ntransition from bicameral thinking to our current sense of self.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The author traces the story from the ancient<br \/>\nGreeks down to the nomadic tribes which were prevalent after the mass genocide<br \/>\nperiod.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was these tribes which<br \/>\npracticed a new monotheism, replacing the pantheon of gods with one deity, and<br \/>\nwhich led to our current Abrahamic religions and their strict morality, most of<br \/>\nwhich is based on refuting the old bicameral gods and our ways of communicating<br \/>\nwith them.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The last section of this<br \/>\nmasterwork seeks out the vestiges of the bicameral mind within our modern<br \/>\nworld.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Humanity went from each one of us<br \/>\nhearing the gods\u2019 voices directly, to the gods only speaking to select priests<br \/>\nand oracles, and then to the gods becoming totally silent, letting their<br \/>\ndesires be known solely through omens, or the revelation of \u201cprophets.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Julian Jaynes backs up every one of his<br \/>\nobservations with rigorous science, and explores the role that our bicameral<br \/>\nmind still plays in the creation of poetry, art, and music.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many creators describe how a piece of art, or<br \/>\nmusic, or poem came to them unbidden, as if the universe was speaking to them<br \/>\ndirectly.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is an example of how our<br \/>\ntwo brains communicate, with one side dominant, and the other not so.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jaynes explores hypnosis and the mechanisms<br \/>\nused to incite it, mechanisms and techniques extremely similar to those used by<br \/>\nancient priests when selecting new oracles.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Basically, the less self-aware you are, the easier it is to be<br \/>\nhypnotized.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The same goes for deeply<br \/>\ndevout religious belief.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;Arial&quot;,sans-serif; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>This book blew me<br \/>\naway.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wish I could cover everything<br \/>\nthat Julian Jaynes discusses in greater detail, but that would take an entire<br \/>\nother book!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a humbling thing to<br \/>\nunderstand that our species, Homo Sapiens Sapiens, lived for over a hundred<br \/>\nthousand years in the bicameral state.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>It is only in the past 2,500 years that what we call human consciousness<br \/>\ncame to be.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is no guarantee that<br \/>\nour individual conscious selves will continue into the future.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It may be that a bicameral mind is better<br \/>\nsuited for long-term survival on Earth, and we will all soon revert back to<br \/>\nthat state.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are no rules stating<br \/>\nthat evolution is a progressive, directional force.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Animals and plants evolve in all directions,<br \/>\nboth \u201cforwards\u201d and \u201cbackwards.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is<br \/>\nour ego that makes us believe we are the epitome of life, that we are the best<br \/>\nliving creature created in our Universe.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>That very ego may destroy us all.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>I look forward to acquiring this book for my own personal library, and<br \/>\njumping back into its amazing pages in the future.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is books such as this one that made me a<br \/>\nbook lover, and keep me a book lover.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>What a
