Diversity of choice will be key to reversing this trend and non-fiction books are very important. Science books offer strong narratives aimed at explaining the world around us and can be something children can dip in and out of, making them a fantastic way to draw in young readers including some reluctant to engage with other genres.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Despite non-fiction books being popular among kids and young people, we often do not put them front and centre when we talk about literature for children. It is a great pleasure to be part of the judging panel for this prize and get the chance to highlight the best of the best in science books for young people.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The full shortlist will now be sent out to over 600 schools, youth groups, and reading clubs across the UK who will read, discuss and ultimately choose the winner out of the six shortlisted books.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the shortlisting panel said about this year\u2019s books:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Green: The Story of Plant Life on Our Planet <\/strong>by Nicola Davies, illustrated by Emily Sutton<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Tamsin Mather FRS <\/strong>said, \u2018This book is a great showcase of the visual language of science. The illustrations are beautiful, and the drawing of a cross-section of the leaf especially won me over. The 4.5-billion-year story of our now green planet, told by the pictures and relatively simple text, is a rich opportunity to share the science of plants and a deeper understanding of ecology with younger children.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patience <\/strong>by Rachel Williams, illustrated by Leonie Lord<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vicky Walsh <\/strong>said, \u2018I love the concept of this book \u2013 looking at the world through the lens of time. The potential for teaching with it is amazing, there are so many activities you can draw from it. It is the type of book that every teacher should have access to and be able to pick up throughout the year.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/booksforkeeps.co.uk\/review\/the-animal-body-book\/\"><strong>The Animal Body Book <\/strong><\/a>by Jess French, illustrated by Jonathan Woodward<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Betina Ip <\/strong>said, \u2018This book goes far beyond simply highlighting animal features and saying, \u2018look at this, this is cool\u2019. It delves into the fascinating mechanisms behind each body part, and the significance of form and function across different species, in an engaging and accessible way.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/booksforkeeps.co.uk\/review\/the-history-of-information\/\"><strong>The History of Information <\/strong><\/a>by Chris Haughton with Loonie Park<\/p>\n<p><strong>Helen Cooper <\/strong>said, \u2018This is a groundbreaking book: the history of how humans learned to record and communicate information, from cave markings to a clear explanation of computer code and AI. The superb illustrations echo ancient symbols, yet also clarify the science and technology behind propaganda, advertising, and social media. It\u2019s an essential story, told in a fascinating way that is accessible for young people.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rocks Book <\/strong>by Nancy Dickmann<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Tamsin Mather FRS <\/strong>said, \u2018This reminds me of the sort of book that had\u00a0me engrossed for hours as a child. It is packed full of amazing pictures and facts but also details the systems used to organise our knowledge. I really like how the author combines information about fantastic exotic rocks, minerals and landscapes from all over the world, along with encouraging readers to explore the rocks in their own back gardens. It certainly excites the explorer in me, and I hope it will our young judges!\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Wild Life of Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Animals <\/strong>by Mike Barfield, illustrated by Paula Bossio<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Steve Brusatte <\/strong>said, \u2018The science in this book is spot on, and the comic book style is really engaging.
