In the fifth episode of Just World Ed\u2019s \u201cGaza & the World\u201d podcast series, the University of Chicago\u2019s Prof. John Mearsheimer slammed the UN Security Council\u2019s adoption November 17 of Pres. Trump\u2019s \u201cComprehensive Plan\u201d for Gaza.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe resolution is disgraceful,\u201d he said, adding,<\/p>\n
\nI find it hard to believe that this is where we have ended up since we\u2019ve been in the midst of a genocide in Gaza since October 7th, 2023. And all sorts of people understand that the Palestinians should have a state of their own, or have some sense of self-determination.<\/p>\n
When you\u2026 look at this resolution, it\u2019s just so counter to everything that would be sensible from my point of view. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Prof. Mearsheimer was talking to JWE\u2019s Helena Cobban less than 20 hours after the Security Council took that fateful vote, in which 13 Council members supported the U.S.-proffered draft, which thereby became UNSC Resolution 2803. Two states, China and Russia, abstained. But by not using their veto, those two states allowed the resolution to pass.<\/p>\n

Prof. Mearsheimer is well known as both an elegant and oft-quoted theorist of international relations, from a determinedly \u201cRealist\u201d perspective, and a forthright and courageous critic of the undue power that Israel has long wielded over the policies of the United States. The 2007 book The Israel Lobby<\/em> and <\/a>U.S. Foreign Policy<\/a> that<\/em> he co-authored with Stephen Walt in 2007 has been translated into 24 languages.<\/p>\n

\nThe Israelis\u2019 ultimate goal here is to ethnically cleanse Gaza. That\u2019s the goal here. They have no interest in facilitating the creation of a Palestinian state\u2026<\/p>\n
We [the United States] have a special relationship with Israel that has no parallel in recorded history\u2026 No matter what Israel does of any major consequence, we support Israel.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
And on the effects the pro-Israel lobby has had on academic and other freedoms in U.S. universities:<\/p>\n
\nIt shows you the damage that Israel, its supporters in the United States and the lobby more generally have done to freedom of speech here in the United States. This is not a good situation. This is a threat to basic liberal values.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
