At the end of last month, I had the privilege of attending the Sepsis Conference 2025<\/strong> at Adelphi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>House, hosted by Salford Professional Development<\/strong> in collaboration with the UK Sepsis Trust\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>(UKST)<\/strong>. Alongside my colleague Michelle, I volunteered on the UKST stand \u2013 supporting\u00a0<\/span><\/span>conversations, sharing resources, and listening to the experiences of delegates from across\u00a0<\/span><\/span>healthcare.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n
The day was filled with valuable insight, but one moment in particular stayed with us: hearing Aaron\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>Speer\u2019s story<\/strong>. A sepsis survivor, Aaron shared his experience with honesty and courage. His\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reflections highlighted not just the physical and emotional impact of surviving sepsis, but also the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>gaps in communication and aftercare. He spoke about not being told he had sepsis until well after\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>his discharge<\/strong>, and how he only began to understand what he\u2019d been through after reaching out to\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>UKST<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n
His story was a powerful reminder of why it’s so important for clinicians to be confident in naming\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>sepsis<\/strong> and to signpost patients to support \u2013 not just at the point of crisis, but during recovery too.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The work of UKST in supporting survivors, educating clinicians, and raising public awareness could\u00a0<\/span><\/span>not be more vital.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>A recurring theme throughout the day \u2013 both in sessions and at the stand \u2013 was the challenge of\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>recognising sepsis in vulnerable populations<\/strong>. Time and time again, we heard questions and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reflections that reinforced the need for education tailored to patients who may not present with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>typical symptoms, or who struggle to communicate what they’re experiencing.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n
These conversations felt particularly relevant, as Michelle and I have recently developed a new elearning module: \u201cSepsis in Vulnerable Populations\u201d<\/strong>. Created in collaboration with the UK Sepsis\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Trust, this training explores how sepsis can present differently in these groups, how diagnostic\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>overshadowing<\/strong> can delay treatment, and what good practice looks like when communication or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>cognition is a barrier. It also includes real-world scenarios and solutions<\/strong> to help learners embed the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>knowledge.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n
Throughout the day, conversations on the stand echoed the importance of this kind of inclusive\u00a0<\/span><\/span>education. It reinforced for both of us that creating practical, accessible training isn\u2019t just useful \u2013 it\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>necessary. Another key area for further training was highlighted in the talk from Dr Nveed Chaudary,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>who tragically lost his son Jibraan from neutropenic sepsis. We shall be exploring possibilities for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>creating digital educational resources around these in the coming days.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n
We left the conference energised by the work still to do \u2013 and more confident than ever in the value\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of what we\u2019re building.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n
