It arrives as both a reintroduction and an evolution, a song he first wrote in 2018 that has since become a kind of spiritual through-line in his live sets and creative life. Long before its official release, \u201cRECALLING\u201d existed as a mantra shared between Skinner and the audiences who sang it back to him \u2013 a communal chant, a grounding ritual, an invocation for clarity. I don\u2019t know where I\u2019d be without music. It\u2019s helped me understand myself and understand others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I try\u00a0and\u00a0create as much as I can in community with others \u2013 for the lifting up of each other. The tradition of Black music is for making us feel closer to each other and I try to be as dedicated as possible to continuing that work.<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"title\"><span\/><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"sub-title\"><strong>I&#8217;m absolutely smitten with your recent releases. First off, what&#8217;s the story behind your song \u201cRECALLING\u201d?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Elliott Skinner<\/strong>: That means a lot! These are songs that feel so close to my spirit, so it\u2019s incredible and also surreal that they\u2019re out. I wrote \u201cRECALLING\u201d after a session in a rehearsal studio with my good friend Zach Mullings in 2018. We were just there to see what we could find, and we stumbled upon this figure that I fell in love with. I wrote the lyrics somewhat hastily \u2013 as in I didn\u2019t take long thinking about the words. For a long time, I actually felt the song wasn\u2019t done, but over the course of 6 years and playing it at mostly every show I\u2019ve had, it\u2019s turned into an intensely cathartic mantra.\u00a0Hearing groups of people singing, in repetition, \u201cI DON\u2019T WANT ANOTHER FANTASY,\u201d releases something good for the soul.<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"title\"><span\/><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"sub-title\"><strong>You&#8217;ve said \u201cRECALLING\u201d is about <em>the pursuit of a better reality<\/em> \u2013 about \u201cnot holding yourself to a version of your life that isn\u2019t meant for you.\u201d I understand you wrote this<\/strong> <strong>song years ago, so it must mean a lot to have it finally out in the world. What does this song mean to you?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Elliott Skinner<\/strong>: I truly feel as though this song has many meanings. The writing lends itself to that. I often view my songs similarly to visual artists and their paintings. I try to put my thoughts and feelings into the work in the most authentic way, but I do hope that people find their own meaning in the words.\u00a0What I\u2019ve learned from singing it for 6 years, is that you can\u2019t hide behind something and gain true fulfillment. There\u2019s a big difference between belief and delusion. There\u00a0are a lot\u00a0of lies being told by people in power \u2013 constructs of gender and race that hold us to these outdated views of reality. It&#8217;s so vulnerable, human, and alive. How do you approach your own music \u2013 and what does the art of music making mean to you?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Elliott Skinner<\/strong>: I love storytelling. Some of my favorite music is guitar and voice, and that\u2019s really where I began as an artist. Writing songs in my room and calling it my expression. There\u2019s an inherent intimacy in that form of work. Though the more I pushed myself to deepen my expression, the more inspiration I found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I think about James Baldwin and his relationship to being an artist. He said, \u201cThe role of the artist is exactly the same as the role of the lover. If I love you, I have to make you conscious of the things you don\u2019t see.\u201d There\u2019s an inherent intensity in that type of work, but also a tenderness. I know music can be a powerful force and I take that very seriously. As much as I make music for the fulfillment of my own spirit, I create for people. I don\u2019t mean in a consumer way either. I mean in the way that my music is supposed to be lived in and sung, not just heard.<\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"title\"><span\/><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"sub-title\"><strong>You&#8217;ve said \u201cI Linger On\u201d is a love letter to music, and it shows. What inspired this song \u2013 what was your vision for it, and how did you go about bringing that vision to life?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Elliott Skinner<\/strong>: This song is another great example of what comes from leaning into community and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I wrote this song with another great friend who goes by canteenkilla. The day we wrote this started like any other day we met up to create. With no expectations, we stumbled upon something so simple yet impactful. I tend to add layers and layers in my songs. I grew up singing in choirs and you can hear that influence in my work, but canteenkilla often has a more of a minimal approach. It\u2019s consistently intimate with moments of expansion, and I love that about the song.\u00a0canteenkilla\u00a0first called it \u201ca love letter to music\u201d because it encapsulates our relationship to music and the home it\u2019s given us. We each have found\u00a0such a strong\u00a0community through our intentional practice.
