I understand why. These are the official signals\u2014public-facing indicators of quality, safety, and worth.<\/p>\n<p>But what those parents are really trying to ask, though few say it outright, is:\u00a0<em>Will my child be known here? Will they be cared for? Will they be safe\u2014emotionally and physically?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Those questions are harder to measure, and harder still to find on the Department for Education website.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, our school was judged\u00a0<em>Requires Improvement<\/em>. That judgement was public, blunt, and\u2014depending on your view\u2014either deserved or completely missing the point.<\/p>\n<p>What didn\u2019t make the report were the safeguarding cases we managed with rigour and heart. It didn\u2019t mention the child who came to us in crisis and left able to smile again. It didn\u2019t recognise the teaching assistant who turned down her lunch break to help a child decode not just a sentence, but their own feelings.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t measure the quiet acts of protection, the trust earned, the laughter returned.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it noted that we \u201cneeded to improve the pace of progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As if grief, neglect, trauma, and neurodivergence follow linear patterns.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe build a family from a spreadsheet and soul.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\u2014\u00a0<em>Requires Improvement<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond Metrics: What to Look For<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, what\u00a0<em>should<\/em>\u00a0parents look for when choosing a school?<\/p>\n<p>Start by noticing the atmosphere. Not the displays or the Ofsted banners\u2014but the emotional temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Do staff seem stretched to breaking or calmly purposeful? Do the children look comfortable in their own skin, or tightly held by behaviour systems that demand compliance over connection?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey come in hot from homes that burn cold.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\u2014\u00a0<em>Requires Improvement<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ask how the school approaches safeguarding\u2014not just how they record it. Ask what happens when a child is dysregulated, when behaviour is a form of communication. Ask how children are supported when they\u2019re neurodivergent, grieving, hungry, or just having a bad day.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen others see attendance, we see survival.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\u2014\u00a0<em>Requires Improvement<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ask how staff are cared for. It would be\u00a0<strong>wellbeing<\/strong>\u2014in its fullest sense.<\/p>\n<p>Not just yoga sessions and PSHE slots, but a fundamental rewiring of how we define success.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s stop asking children to \u201cclose the gap\u201d when the system keeps digging the hole.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey call the storm \u2018disruption.\u2019\u201d<\/em><br \/>\u2014\u00a0<em>Requires Improvement<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s make music, art, and rest priorities\u2014not because they\u2019re nice extras, but because they\u2019re essential parts of being whole.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYes, I carry shame\u2014like a rucksack I forgot I put on.<br \/>But I also carry fire.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\u2014\u00a0<em>Always Moving<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s value safeguarding, emotional regulation, and compassion as signs of excellence\u2014not soft add-ons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Pause in the System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the past year, I began writing poems as a way to process the emotional and ethical strain of leadership\u2014and of being neurodivergent in a role that rarely pauses.<\/p>\n<p>Those poems became\u00a0<em>Parenthesis<\/em>\u2014a collection (and album) exploring what it means to care for children in a system that doesn\u2019t always make space for care.<\/p>\n<p>A parenthesis, after all, is a bracket\u2014a pause. A space set aside.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what good schools are.<br \/>Not perfect. Not polished.<\/p>\n<p>But places that hold the child when everything else is too sharp, too fast, or too much.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe hold them safe.<br \/>We hold them steady.<br \/>And we\u2014<br \/>we\u2019re doing our very best.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\u2014\u00a0<em>Requires Improvement<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>About the author:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rob Dell is a parent, headteacher, and designated safeguarding lead based in Hertfordshire.
