The queue is massive, spiralling around the

\nRolex shop to open.<\/p>\n

As predicted a few weeks ago: the bubble has arrived \u2014 the big, beautiful bubble called the run on gold merchants.<\/p>\n

An onlooker unfamiliar with the situation might wonder: what are all
\nthese people lining up for? To sell their gold and take advantage of
\nhigh prices? To buy more, fearing that money will soon be worthless?
\nYes, a few are queueing for those reasons. But the vast majority are
\nsimply desperate to collect actual gold \u2014 to convert an \u201cI owe you\u201d
\npiece of paper into real, physical metal.<\/p>\n

The frenzy and the urgency? Simple: there\u2019s far more paper, more
\npromissory notes, more contracts, than there is actual gold in the
\nentire world.<\/p>\n

And as the price of gold continues to bubble, there will be more demand,
\n more pressure \u2014 until the pressure cooker finally blows its lid, and
\nLima beans hit the ceiling fan.<\/p>\n

Back in June 2015, when a batch of twenty Rebelde 18k gold watches was
\ndelivered to Rebelde ambassadors, history was made. The first steel
\nmodel had been released only 13 months earlier \u2014 and it was the first
\ntime in Australia that a microbrand, still in its infancy, released
\nmassive 18k yellow and rose gold watches. And massive they were:
\n135-gram monsters \u2014 not hollowed-out or gold-clad cases, not cheaply
\ncast, but thick, heavy, solid-gold, three-piece machined cases.<\/p>\n

The retail price was $13,980. Today, those 18k Rebelde watches are worth twice that.<\/p>\n

And their value is not set by me, or by Chrono24, or an auction house,
\nor a group of cashed-up collectors who worship microbrands. That\u2019s the
\nprice any gold merchant \u2014 anywhere in the world, from Mumbai to Moscow,
\nHong Kong to Johannesburg, or Buenos Aires \u2014 would pay for my watch. Not
\n because they value my horological genius, my name, or the \u201cAustralian
\nbrand.\u201d For that, they couldn\u2019t care less. They pay for the gold itself.<\/p>\n

To my ambassadors who invested wisely in Rebelde: well done \u2014 you\u2019ve
\ndoubled your money. Plus, you\u2019re wearing a watch of genuine horological
\nsignificance. You were backers of a project that will never be repeated \u2014
\n or at least not in the next decade \u2014 by any Australian microbrand.<\/p>\n

When someone once asked, \u201cWhy would anyone invest in a gold Rebelde?\u201d I answered in a blog post \u2014 more than 10 years ago.
Today, that answer has been fully validated \u2014 and it\u2019s as relevant as ever.
