\nFacebook group for people who have had a sibling die.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Way back in April, I posted this:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI live in South
\nArlington, VA, near Arlington National Cemetery. It is a beautiful place, and I
\nsometimes go there to visit the gravesites of my in-laws.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you have a sibling
\nburied there, but you do not live near enough to visit? If so, I would love to
\nvisit their gravesite for you and leave a flower. I would send you a photo.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Just let me know. My
\nsister is buried too far away for me to go visit, so I understand the feeling
\nof wishing you could stop by but you can’t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The way I look at it,
\nliving near the capital of the country is a privilege, and I try to use that
\nprivilege to help others when possible.\u00a0 <\/span>So,
\nif I could use an hour or two of my time to visit the grave of a loved one and
\nhelp someone feel even a tiny bit better, well then, I consider that time well
\nspent.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A person who lives in
\nCalifornia commented on my post.\u00a0 <\/span>She said:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I know it\u2019s a bit further than
\nArlington National Cemetery but would you be willing to go to the police
\nofficers\u2019 memorial for me and leave a flower?\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course I said yes.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been 2 \u00bd months since
\nthat \u201cyes\u201d, and it has been weighing heavily on my mental to-do list.\u00a0 <\/span>So, this morning I decided that today was the
\nday.\u00a0 <\/span>I was off of work, the sun was
\nshining, and I had a plan – go to Trader Joe\u2019s and buy a dozen roses.\u00a0 <\/span>I would use one of those roses to decorate
\nthe woman\u2019s brother\u2019s space on the memorial.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Great plan.\u00a0 <\/span>But what to do with the other 11 roses?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Another plan \u2013 GIVE THOSE
\nAWAY TO STRANGERS<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Now let me tell you
\nthis.\u00a0 <\/span>As much as I like to talk<\/u>
\nto strangers, offering them gifts out of the blue is a bit scary.\u00a0 <\/span>It just is not something that is normally
\ndone in our culture.\u00a0 <\/span>So, when you do it,
\nyou have to have thick skin and be ready for rejection, because not everyone is
\ngoing to take you up on your offer, no matter what you are giving away.\u00a0 <\/span>Trust me on this one, I have learned that
\nlesson.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, step one:\u00a0 <\/span>TRADER JOE\u2019S FOR ROSES.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

But which<\/i> roses?? \u00a0<\/span>There were so many!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, there were
\nclassic red roses.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Pink ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

White.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, the coral ones that I always
\nlove.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And yellow.\u00a0 <\/span>Bright yellow\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Today is Juneteenth, and
\nthere is some yellow\/gold associated with that holiday.\u00a0 <\/span>So, even though I wouldn\u2019t usually choose the
\nyellow roses, today for some reason I did.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

I checked out and then went
\nto my \u201cstation\u201d: I stood outside the door of the grocery store.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

My plan was to offer roses
\nto people as they left.\u00a0 <\/span>I thought giving
\nthem to people coming IN would be awkward \u2013 where do you keep a rose while you
\nshop, and would it be confusing trying to explain to the cashier that it was
\nalready paid for by some random stranger?\u00a0
\n<\/span>So, target EXIT-ERS<\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

As I got the roses out of
\nthe cellophane and awkwardly stood alone in the sunshine, I felt uncomfortable\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Rejection was right around the corner.\u00a0 <\/span>Why<\/b> do I put myself in those
\nsituations?\u00a0 <\/span>Flashbacks of the people
\nthinking David and I were complete weird-os for offering them free pie on Pi
\nDay\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Push through.\u00a0 <\/span>The sun is shining.\u00a0 <\/span>You have ROSES TO GIVE AWAY!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I smiled at a woman as she
\nwas coming out of the store and held out a rose.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHere!\u00a0
\n<\/span>Would you like a flower?\u201d I think I said, I can\u2019t remember (see above \u2013
\nthis can be a bit stressful\u2026).<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

She smiled and took the
\nflower.\u00a0 <\/span>Then she did something that
\nreally surprised me \u2013 she called me by name!\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSusan?\u00a0 <\/span>I know you!!\u201d she said.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Turns out, she and I are in
\nthe same Buy Nothing group and she recognized me!\u00a0 <\/span>What are the chances that the very first
\nperson I offered a flower to actually knew me?\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Well then, rose number one
\ngiven away and it went so well, I felt more comfortable.\u00a0 <\/span>I held out flowers and smiled, everyone
\nexcept one person smiled back and accepted the gift.\u00a0 <\/span>One woman was especially happy and said that
\nyellow is her favorite color.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I was focusing on women,
\nbut I decided to try a man.\u00a0 <\/span>I mean, the
\nworst that could happen is he said no, right?\u00a0
\n<\/span>\u201cExcuse me sir, would you like a rose?\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

He smiled awkwardly and
\nshook his head no.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I countered, \u201cMaybe you
\nhave someone that you<\/u> would like to give it to???\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The awkward smile was
\nreplaced by a genuine one as he accepted the gift.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhy yes!\u00a0
\n<\/span>Yes. I do!\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The woman from Buy Nothing
\nreturned and asked if she could take a photo of the stranger and I.\u00a0 <\/span>She later posted it in the group, saying, \u201cOur
\nvery own Kindness Activist, Susan Thompson Gaines, once again spreading joy in
\nthe form of roses to unsuspecting shoppers. \"\ud83d\udc95\"\"\ud83d\udc95\"<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

How sweet!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I gave away 10 roses and
\ndecided to keep 2 to bring to the Police Officers\u2019 Memorial.\u00a0 <\/span>I had never been and wasn\u2019t sure what it
\nwould look like, so maybe 2 roses would be needed.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

We waited out a huge
\nsummer storm, then went into DC.\u00a0 <\/span>The Memorial
\nis beautiful \u2013 similar to the one for Vietnam.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Names of fallen officers are etched in stone and a beautiful fountain
\nwas flowing.\u00a0 <\/span>The woman whose brother is
\nhonored there had told me which section to look in, and it didn\u2019t take long to
\nfind his name.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Doing kind acts like this
\none is truly an honor.\u00a0 <\/span>I looked up the
\nman\u2019s name in a directory at the site and learned that he died recently,
\n2023.\u00a0 <\/span>I thought about him and wondered
\nabout his life.\u00a0 <\/span>Who, besides his sister,
\ndid he leave behind\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>I tried to make a
\nrubbing of the name to send to the woman, but everything was still wet from the
\nrain so it didn\u2019t work.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

As we were getting ready
\nto go, I noticed 3 people across the way.\u00a0
\n<\/span>They seemed focused on one spot on the wall.\u00a0 <\/span>I guessed that they were likely there to
\nhonor a loved one who had died.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s take one of the
\nroses and walk that way,\u201d I said to David.\u00a0
\n<\/span>\u201cIf they don\u2019t already have a flower, we can give them this one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Off we went, ready to hand
\nthe 11th<\/sup> rose to a stranger.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

As we approached, I saw
\nthat they had taped a photo of their loved one above his name.\u00a0 <\/span>He was young, as were the 2 children standing
\nnear us who had lost their father.\u00a0 <\/span>They
\nlooked like they were young teens.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I commented on how nice
\nthe photo was.\u00a0 <\/span>I asked if they would
\nlike a rose to leave at the site and held it out.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The woman raised her hand
\nto take it, but had a bit of a surprised look on her face.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA YELLOW ROSE.\u00a0 <\/span>Yellow<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>That is what he always gave me!\u00a0 <\/span>I don\u2019t like red roses, he always gave me yellow<\/i>\u2026\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The children smiled and
\nrepeated, \u201cA YELLOW ROSE!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I knew why the
\nyellow flowers called my name. \u00a0<\/span>It was as
\nif somehow the fallen officer was giving his love a rose again.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

They thanked us.\u00a0 <\/span>We took some photos for them and said
\ngoodbye.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Roses for strangers.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Strangers outside the
\ngrocery store.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A stranger from the internet.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And a stranger who lost her
\nhusband.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, roses for strangers.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

That was the best $11.65 of
\nKindness Activist funds that I have spent in a very long time.<\/span><\/p>\n

P.S. – I love to imagine all of the kindness ripples that took place today because of these flowers and this kindness…\u00a0 The woman who did not get a flower because I didn’t have one left to offer her, but still came up to me and said, “I saw what you were doing.\u00a0 That was very, very kind…”.\u00a0 The man who was brave enough to take the flower from a stranger, who no doubt re-told the story of how he had it when he passed it on to his loved one.\u00a0 The family at the memorial who are likely telling all their friends about the mysterious yellow rose…\u00a0 And the woman whose brother was honored at the memorial.\u00a0 Kindness ripples all around.\u00a0 Gives me goosebumps.<\/span><\/p>\n
