Curious, the mariners decided to investigate using an underwater camera. They were shocked to see the outline of a 16th-century ship.<\/p>\n<p>They then alerted the French Ministry of Culture\u2019s Department of Underwater and Submarine Archaeological Research. Officials\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.premar-mediterranee.gouv.fr\/communiques-presse\/decouverte-remarquable-l-epave-la-plus-profonde-referencee-dans-les-eaux-sous-juridiction-francaise-au-large-de-ramatuelle-83\">confirmed<\/a> the sailors had stumbled upon a shipwreck\u2014not only that, but the deepest known shipwreck in French waters.<\/p>\n<p>The wreck is 1.6 miles below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Ramatuelle, near Saint-Tropez. Previously, the deepest known shipwreck in French waters was<em> La Minerve<\/em>, a French submarine that sank in 1968 and now rests more than 1.4 miles below the surface near the city of Toulon, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20250612-archaeologists-find-france-s-deepest-shipwreck\">Agence France-Presse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The newly discovered vessel is known as the <em>Camarat 4<\/em>, a nod to the nearby Cap Camarat headland. Some of the jugs are covered in geometric or plant-shaped designs, while others bear the letters \u201cIHS,\u201d which represent the first three letters of Jesus Christ\u2019s name in Greek, reports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/divernet.com\/scuba-news\/wrecks\/deepest-ever-shipwreck-in-french-seas-is-1500s-trader\/\"><em>Divernet<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Steve Weinman.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists have also found two cooking pots, six cannons and anchors among the wreckage.<\/p>\n<p>Because it\u2019s been preserved from degradation and protected from looters, the wreck site is \u201ca genuine time capsule,\u201d said Marine Sadania, an underwater archaeologist with the French culture ministry, at a June 11 press conference, as reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/science\/article\/2025\/06\/12\/rare-16th-century-shipwreck-found-at-record-depth-in-french-waters_6742282_10.html\"><em>Le Monde<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Sofia Fischer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels as if time stopped on this ship,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>However, interspersed among the 500-year-old artifacts, the researchers also found lots of modern trash\u2014everything from beer cans and yogurt containers to plastic bottles and fishing nets.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/UAD6gl-DU1sRBlNzO0d6UL1QZAU=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(695x483:696x484)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/1a\/b5\/1ab5eb0f-d34b-4fce-adb6-35feabdd9d2d\/502898802_1228681525719586_3615561736483342987_n.jpg\" alt=\"Underwater view of 16th-century shipwreck\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      The archeologists also found modern trash among the artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">French Department of Underwater and Submarine Archaeological Research<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAfter the awe of the discovery comes the sadness of finding such things,\u201d said Arnaud Schaumasse, the director of the Department of Underwater and Submarine Archaeological Research, as reported by <em>Le Monde<\/em>. \u201cThe ocean isn\u2019t a garbage dump, but it is apparently being treated as one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, archaeologists hope to find out more about the ship, including what caused it to sink. Based on the way the debris is strewn about, they suspect the vessel may have capsized, but they don\u2019t know why.<\/p>\n<p>Another mystery? The empty stern, which is unusual for a merchant ship jam-packed with cargo. Perhaps something was stashed in the stern, but the items were perishable and they decomposed over the centuries.<\/p>\n<p>The team hopes to bring together more experts, including ceramologists, historians and geologists, to solve these and other mysteries.
