If you\u2019re self-employed or a small business owner, it\u2019s especially important to prioritise as you\u2019re always doing so many things at once.<\/p>\n<p>We know it can seem overwhelming at times, especially when something goes wrong and your whole workload is thrown into disarray, so we\u2019ve pulled together some top tips that\u2019ll help you focus and get the work done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First up, make a list of everything you need to do.<\/strong> When you\u2019ve finished your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printabletodolist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cto do\u201d list<\/a>, pay attention to what you put down first. This could be the most pressing issue on your mind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next you should identify which of the jobs are the most urgent, and which are the most important.<\/strong> The difference between the two is simple: if you have to do it immediately, it\u2019s urgent. If it contributes to a long-term goal, it\u2019s important. Sometimes, jobs are both. Sometimes they\u2019re neither.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re working out how to prioritise in each case, follow the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eisenhower.me\/eisenhower-matrix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eisenhower matrix<\/a>. It works as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If it\u2019s urgent and important: do it now.<\/li>\n<li>If it\u2019s urgent and not important: delegate to someone else.<\/li>\n<li>If it\u2019s not urgent but it is important: schedule a time to do it later.<\/li>\n<li>If it\u2019s not urgent and not important: forget about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kashflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eisenhower-box.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-77931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kashflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eisenhower-box.jpg\" alt=\"prioritise your workload with the Eisenhower Box\" width=\"778\" height=\"628\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019ve got a lot of urgent tasks, you need to establish the value of each job. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You should, for example, focus on work for clients over internal errands. Deal with customer support before you crack on with social scheduling. Choose jobs with the closest deadlines so you\u2019re not running up against it and risking unnecessary mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing to remember: the more people that are impacted, the more valuable the job is likely to be. If others are waiting for you to finish your part, this should be one of your more urgent priorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Estimate the effort involved. <\/strong>Another way to approach your workload, particularly with less urgent tasks, is to establish how much effort will go into completing it.<\/p>\n<p>You could start long term projects early and keep them running in the background. Alternatively, you could choose a couple of quick jobs, just to cut the list down and put yourself in a productive mindset.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create deadlines. <\/strong>This is a good technique for your important and non-urgent tasks. It\u2019s important to be realistic, as missing your own deadlines will only add to your frustration.<\/p>\n<p>One way to ensure you actually meet your deadline is to make it public. It can be scary, but that\u2019s the point \u2013 you\u2019re making yourself accountable and giving yourself a real incentive not to miss your deadline.<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s not feasible (say you\u2019re a sole-trader and there\u2019s no-one to hold you accountable), give yourself an incentive for meeting the deadline \u2013 like an early finish, and a punishment for missing it. Just make sure you\u2019re not the person executing it so you can\u2019t cave in at the last minute!<\/p>\n<p><strong>When setting deadlines, see if there\u2019s a pattern.<\/strong> Will completing one task make another easier?
