In April, I wrote about a topic that rarely gets attention in peer-to-peer fundraising: how to say no to a donation request<\/a>. I explained why it\u2019s helpful when someone lets me know they won\u2019t be donating, especially if they\u2019ve contributed in the past. As I said then, \u201cIt allows me to focus on other potential donors instead of wondering if I should follow up.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Today, I want to address another topic that shows up in almost every fundraising campaign I run: donors apologizing for the size of their gift.<\/p>\n

As a fundraiser, it honestly bums me out when someone sends a donation \u2014 in the exact amount they\u2019re comfortable giving \u2014 but pairs it with an apology. My immediate reaction is always: Please don\u2019t apologize! I\u2019m grateful for your donation, and every dollar makes a difference.<\/em><\/p>\n

I get it. Even I sometimes feel the urge to write \u201cI\u2019m sorry I couldn\u2019t give more\u201d<\/em> or \u201cI wish it matched what you gave me.\u201d<\/em> But here\u2019s where I remind myself (deep breath): I can only give what I can afford, no matter how much someone asks for or how generous they\u2019ve been to me.<\/p>\n

So, here\u2019s my message to you \u2014 especially if you\u2019re someone who\u2019s often asked to donate: Let yourself off the hook. Stop apologizing for your gift.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You never owe anyone a specific sized donation. We all have different budgets and financial pressures. Your fundraising friend understands that and is grateful for any support you can give. And please don\u2019t hold back from donating at all just because you think your gift is \u201ctoo small.\u201d There\u2019s no minimum amount that counts as meaningful. At the end of the day, your donation \u2014 regardless of the size \u2014 truly makes an impact, especially when combined with the efforts of their whole community.<\/p>\n

So don\u2019t apologize. You\u2019re making a difference. You\u2019re showing up with kindness and generosity, and that deserves to be celebrated.<\/p>\n
