Today, oddly enough, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/lifestyle\/celebrate-world-gin-day-on-june-14-with-these-recipes-9378760.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Gin Day<\/a>, so I foresee a squiffy weekend ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Writers and poets have quite a reputation for imbibing \u2013 just think Ernest Hemingway, Dylan Thomas and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Zelda, too) \u2013 and how about cocktail lover Dorothy Parker who once joked that she wasn\u2019t a \u201cwriter with a drinking problem\u201d but \u201ca drinker with a writing problem!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you prefer reading to boozing but would still like to par(hic)ipate, may I suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/blackwells.co.uk\/bookshop\/product\/Good-Morning-Midnight-by-Jean-Rhys\/9780141183930?a_aid=bookjotter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Good Morning, Midnight<\/em><\/a> by Jean Rhys or <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/a\/15594\/9781913606374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Lost Weekend<\/em><\/a> by Charles R. Jackson? \u2013 but be warned, they may turn you off having \u2018a cold one\u2019 or a sip of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/CultureUK\/Mothers-Ruin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mother\u2019s Ruin<\/a> for the rest of your naturals. Discussions have been taking place and a decision reached that the next challenge will take place \u201cthis autumn (or spring, if you\u2019re one of the upside-down people [charming! \ud83d\ude43]).\u201d A book has been selected from <a href=\"https:\/\/ksrgmck.wordpress.com\/the-classics-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kelly\u2019s Classics Club<\/strong><\/a> and the title (ta-da!) is none other than French literary realist Gustave Flaubert\u2019s 1856 novel <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/a\/15594\/9780143106494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Madame Bovary<\/em><\/a>. They \u201csaved lives in the no man\u2019s land, took the lives of rivals in unimaginably difficult situations and spent the rest of their [days] reliving the harsh memories\u201d, says Srilagna. A story about three women at different stages in their lives, this slim volume is actually \u201cset in the heat of summer\u201d as, apparently, the spring in the title alludes to \u201cthe awakening\u201d of its protagonists (all of whom are in domestic service). \u201cIt is not a plot-y book,\u201d but the characters\u2019 different \u201cperspectives kept [her] glued to the page.\u201d The author \u201cdoes a fantastic job of capturing the tension, unease, and vulnerability of being a woman, especially [\u2026] a woman in domestic service in the 1930s\u201d, says Caro, and she concludes by declaring her admiration for Dunning\u2019s story. This \u201cpleasurable read\u201d begins with Basil Palmer, who is planning a murder in the North of England seaside resort of the title\u201d, which involves pushing the victim off a cliff. Meanwhile, \u201camateur sleuth, Rachel, has just bought a painting, also of Hemlock Bay\u201d and it appears to show a body on the beach. An image she cannot get out of her mind. \u201cThe story is peppered with many interesting characters\u201d, says Judith, and the whole thing \u201ccomes together with a twisty plot and a barrel of surprises at the end\u201d.
