Discovery, along with some of its gaming IP.<\/p>\n<p>This story requires some context, starting with the fact that Warner Bros. Discovery, which has been facing some financial troubles the last few years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbd.com\/news\/warner-bros-discovery-separate-two-leading-media-companies\">has announced a restructuring, <\/a>which includes splitting into two separate companies. If that sounds familiar, it\u2019s because Ubisoft is also doing some very similar.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Last of Us | Official Trailer | Max\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uLtkt8BonwM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The split will be completed by mid-2026, with the newly formed \u201cStreaming &amp; Studios\u201d being composed of Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, and notably, the WB Games division.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of the split the company also announced that it intends on releasing less games overall and focus more on its core IP of Harry Potter, DC, Game of Thrones and Mortal Kombat. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, we already <a href=\"https:\/\/wolfsgamingblog.com\/2024\/09\/04\/hogwarts-legacy-sequel-is-a-couple-of-years-down-the-road-and-one-of-warner-bros-biggest-priorities\/\">know that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in development<\/a>, while a new Game of Thrones RTS was just revealed. <a href=\"https:\/\/wolfsgamingblog.com\/2025\/05\/17\/insider-teases-injustice-3-netherealms-next-move\/\">There\u2019s also rumours that Netherealm might be working on Injustice 3.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But where does Sony come into the picture? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sescoops.com\/news\/buyer-eyeing-warner-bros-new-streaming-spin-off-exclusive\/\">Well, according sescoops.com,<\/a> \u201cSony is considering a purchase of the newly announced WBD Streaming and Studios company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, sescoops.com is a wrestling-focused website, so not a source normally worth considering. However, sescoops.com covers All Elite Wrestling (AEW) which is broadcast by Warner Bros. Discovery. sescoops.com has a proven track record when it comes to insider AEW information, so it is possible the website\u2019s sources also have the inside track on Warner Bros. Discovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSources said Sony was only interested acquiring WBD\u2019s streaming, studio and gaming assets if they were separated from its cable networks, which have lost millions of homes as viewers abandon traditional cable packages,\u201d says sescoops.com.<\/p>\n<p>Sony has made some movies towards becoming a larger multimedia company in the past few years. It also showed interested in acquiring Fox before Disney snatched the company up, and was in talks to buy Paramount at one point as well. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very interesting story, but for now I\u2019m inclined to say there isn\u2019t much to it. The source isn\u2019t the strongest, and I don\u2019t think Sony would be looking to spend the amount of money it would take to buy out Warner Bros. Discovery\u2019s new company. We\u2019re talking thousands of employees, multiple game studios, a streaming service and more, all of which could command a huge price. Right now, Warner Bros. Discovery holds a market cap of $26 billion. The new streaming company isn\u2019t going to be tied down by as much debt (Warner Bros. is keeping most of it with the second company) and will likely hit the market with a strong value of its own, one potentially much higher than WBDs current market cap.<\/p>\n<p>Sony, meanwhile, currently has about $24 billion in cash. Of course, cash isn\u2019t everything and Sony could bring far more money to bear if needed, but the point is buying this new company would be a monumentally huge move for Sony, and one I can\u2019t imagine them willing to risk.
