Right now, you may be nodding your head in agreement \u2026 or shaking it in disbelief. If you are doing the former, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ve embraced the benefits of empathy. Congratulations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-d2p3r\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>A few days ago, I had an interesting coaching session with a leader. He was telling me that he wanted his team to have <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lmartin2814.wixsite.com\/mysite\/post\/why-conversation-is-the-key-to-keeping-your-best-people\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"WAzZp aiPD3\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#be301a;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>real, frank discussions<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-fum9c\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>He wanted people to actively discuss a \u2018negative or charged\u2019 situation. But his company culture was so focused on heads-down work and avoiding \u2018personal or uncomfortable\u2019 conversations that he didn\u2019t know where to start.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-ca0h3\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>This was a challenge for him, and it\u2019s a challenge for many leaders.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-aicag\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>You can argue that for the past 50 years, much of western world leadership has revolved around execution and expertise. We promote people because they have functional knowledge and\/or are masters of their verticals. We don\u2019t often promote people because they\u2019re good, caring individuals.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-1nmls\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>That might be changing, and I\u2019d argue it has to change.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-6ae2c\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>We need to transition from \u2018command and control\u2019 cultures to <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lmartin2814.wixsite.com\/mysite\/post\/why-most-of-us-have-no-idea-how-to-lead-effectively\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"WAzZp aiPD3\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#be301a;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>\u2018listen and love\u2019 cultures<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>. Many leaders have revealed that they fear being perceived as incompetent, and most <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-28lis\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>2. From that fear, I\u2019d argue this follows:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-d0m9g\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>3. If you\u2019ve mastered those two items, the natural extension would be:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-7ov5e\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>In short, you need to be empathetic.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"pEp3- PFqYV _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-cjuu3\"><span class=\"NsX9Q\"><span style=\"color:#be301a;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Empathetic cultures drive more profits<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-2t88r\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Now, I know the response that comes back from many leaders\u2014and I\u2019ve heard this from them directly: the point of a workplace isn\u2019t love, compassion, and empathy. In most cases, it\u2019s making money and pleasing stakeholders. Right? Right.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-qbqs\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Yet studies reveal more empathetic cultures drive more profits.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-do23g\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>It\u2019s true. Emma Seppala, a researcher at Stanford, has shown the benefits of empathy. Her research says that compassionate and loving workplace cultures naturally reduce burnout and churn while increasing <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lisamartininternational.com\/post\/building-trust-is-the-key-to-collaboration\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"WAzZp aiPD3\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#be301a;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>productivity<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span> (12 percent and more).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-dmsef\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>The sheer fact of the matter is this: many of us spend close to 60 hours\/week on tasks, topics, and ideas related to work. That time can\u2019t be all nose-to-the-grindstone deliverables-chasing work. There needs to be degrees of connection, love, authenticity, compassion, and true empathy at work.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-68umj\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>This will make us better leaders, better co-workers, and more productive individual contributors. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-7rvkn\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><span style=\"color:#7f6c57;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>And hey, in the process, we might all make some more money too.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"_3swDb PFqYV _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-3okk8\"><span class=\"NsX9Q\"><span style=\"color:#be301a;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Enjoyed this article?
