Natural wine became entangled with the internet, so much so that posting about it is now a viable career path for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/super-vino-bros-natural-wine-influencer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a duo of wine-tasting influencer twins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/hannah-crosbie-wine-critic-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shitposting wine critic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and several online personalities dedicated to making wine more accessible, or at least more fun. The scene got irony-pilled\u2014cue the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/modernschoolnoida.com\/home.aspx?DNN=ke576096646&amp;cid=124&amp;m=1&amp;g=18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNatural Wine Sucks\u201d T-shirts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of just a few years ago\u2014and has now circled back around to a full, unironic embrace of the things many once stood resolutely against, like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">establishment<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> red wines, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/pet-nat-natural-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">p\u00e9t-nat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/piquette-natural-wine-trend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">piquette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became pass\u00e9. The wine world is fractured. For every person in a wine meme page\u2019s comments saying <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natty is dead<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is a blissfully offline wine enthusiast with no idea what you\u2019re talking about. And, for the most part, we can\u2019t even seem to agree on what the relevant terms mean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am someone who knows how to do <i>the wine talk<\/i>, but also knows how ineffective it can be,\u201d says Marie Cheslik, a former wine director and the creator of Slik Wines, a platform for wine education. \u201cPeople have a hard time describing wine naturally&#8230; They say, \u2018I want something that\u2019s dry\u2019, or \u2018fruity,\u2019 but I don\u2019t even think we\u2019re all on the same page, as a society, about what that means. It is almost <i>too<\/i> subjective.\u201d A universal wine language does not entirely exist.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do you talk about wine, which has only gotten more expansive and convoluted in the past five years, in a meaningful way? Trite as it may sound, you have to take it offline, and you have to taste\u2014and talk about it\u2014with others as much as you can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important for people to, at the risk of sounding so corny, be curious,\u201d says Colleen Allerton-Hollier, director of education and events at Leon &amp; Son, a wine shop in Brooklyn, New York. \u201cYou won\u2019t know what to call something unless you\u2019ve experienced it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, here\u2019s your cheat sheet to the wine words to know right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"new_article_block content-block\">\n<p><b>Aeration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Literally adding oxygen (via air) to wine. For centuries, people have come up with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/wine-aeration-gadgets-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all manner of gadgets and hacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to aerate their wines. According to Punch contributor Saman Hosseini, it\u2019s \u201ca symptom of early-aughts drinkers\u2019 ceaseless desire for \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/lets-talk-about-smooth-whiskey-spirits-tasting-notes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoothness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019\u201d and a way to flex your Sharper Image purchase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Baby fat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For Nader Asgari-Tari, director of wine at Boston\u2019s BCB3, \u201cbaby fat\u201d can be a useful way to describe \u201cthe temporary roundness and characteristics associated with younger wines that have lots of flesh and will assuredly lose some of that [texture].\u201d As certain wines, like an albari\u00f1o, mature, they may lose some of that texture (aka baby fat) and fall more into balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Big Red Wine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bolder, fuller-bodied red wines like Bordeaux and Barolo. As Punch contributor Eliza Dumais <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/big-red-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Big Reds represent a pendulum swing for the wine world, partly in reaction to the now years-long reign of \u201cchilled reds\u201d like gamay and Beaujolais at natural wine bars and shops everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Budget banger:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A useful term from the retail floor at Leon &amp; Son. \u201cA budget banger, to me, is the best way to communicate to someone that they\u2019re getting a great deal,\u201d says Allerton-Hollier. These wines punch above their weight for their price, like an entry-level wine from \u201ca producer who [also] makes really expensive or allocated wines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Clean: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can refer to the flavor and texture of a wine (see also: \u201cCrisp\/crispy\u201d), while some, confusingly, use it to describe the way a wine is made\u2014sustainably? naturally? Like the nebulous diet culture phrase \u201cclean eating,\u201d it can be unclear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Conventional:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Generally used to describe the opposite of \u201cnatural\u201d wines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Crisp\/crispy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lately, it seems \u201ccrisp\u201d is meant to convey a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wineenthusiast.com\/recipe\/crisp-martini-sauvignon-blanc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vibe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than any actual characteristic. \u201c\u2018Crisp white wines\u2019\u2014I hear that all the time [requested] on the retail floor,\u201d says Allerton-Hollier. \u201c\u2018Nothing sweet. No Chardonnay.\u2019 It\u2019s like, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aw, man, what if you had something with texture?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d As Bustle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/life\/white-wine-popular-trend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported last month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, white wines that mostly just taste \u201ccold\u201d \u201care back\u201d in a \u201csemi-ironic, intentional self-bimbo-ficiation\u201d way. To that I say: What the hell, sure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Crunchy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This term refers to structure, describing high-acid wines with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/crunchy-natural-wine-sommelier-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brittle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> characteristic. Though it\u2019s not new, the word is \u201cascendant\u201d among wine drinkers, but has grown to \u201cbecome a kind of shibboleth,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says William Simons, wine director at Washington D.C.\u2019s Albi, who feels it may be time to retire the buzzword in favor of clearer descriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Crushable:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A bro-y catchall for \u201ceasy-drinking\u201d that isn\u2019t just limited to wine, but also beer, seltzer and cocktails. As Punch contributor Danny Chau <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/lets-talk-about-crushable-beer-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cIts value lies in its universality.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"new_article_block post_block has-3\">\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"new_article_block content-block\">\n<p><b>Dad Wine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sarah Morrissey, bar manager of Le Veau d\u2019Or in New York City, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/big-red-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">puts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cCabs, Bordeaux, merlot, blends&#8230; any red that can stand up to bold flavors\u201d in this category. See also: Big Red Wine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Dry:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Technically, lacking residual sugar. In practice, though, retailers and educators say the average wine drinker <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requests \u201csomething dry,\u201d without much of an understanding of what they\u2019re actually after. \u201cI would say to them that 90 percent of wines are dry. I\u2019m not talking about residual sugar. I\u2019m talking about &#8230; most of the wines you\u2019re going to taste in a tasting are dry,\u201d says Cheslik. \u201cIt\u2019s like literal grape juice [as \u2018sweet\u2019] versus most wine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Dusty:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWhenever I taste Bordeaux, it tastes dusty to me. There is a decrepit aspect to it. I called it \u2018library energy\u2019 [in a recent TikTok,]\u201d says Cheslik.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Feminine\/masculine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Historically, \u201cfeminine\u201d wines are said to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or, ugh, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supple, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while \u201cmasculine\u201d wines are structured, rich, powerful. These gendered frameworks are widely considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/end-gendering-feminine-masculine-wine-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the ideas behind them persist\u2014you can probably think of \u201cdad\u201d and \u201cmom\u201d wines, some even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/momjuicewine.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOoryvA5rHhOjta8oJfIBYS7AyDMQvd1MsA-e3oqkq97CM2d8zADO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">branded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as such.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Funky:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A widely (over)used term. It typically refers to a flavor profile\u2014a savory, earthy, sometimes musty quality\u2014but has some detractors. Because it\u2019s characterized by \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/lets-talk-about-funky-natural-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">novel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wineenthusiast.com\/basics\/drinks-terms-defined\/funky-wine-tasting-term\/?srsltid=AfmBOopznM2kwPqmom_38yqIc0IrQCFRUi8lcN-2Jyyi6cyd4iTyY1dn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unfamiliar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d tastes and aromas, the description inherently involves subjectivity, which means it can be confusing. Wine pros caution against using \u201cfunky\u201d as a catchall: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t always mean \u2018the flavors of an orange or spontaneously fermented wine,\u2019\u201d says Allerton-Hollier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Glou-glou: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the pervasiveness of this term in the past decade, in 2025, it now feels a bit dated. It is, in fact, not new, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/glou-glou-wine-term-trend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the 1600s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s onomatopoeia, the French version of \u201cglug,\u201d and refers to fresh and juicy wines. More recently, however, after lending its name to wine shops, publications and other brands, it\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meiningers-international.com\/wine\/styles-regions\/natural-wines-divide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become a meta-profile for natural wine overall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>High-toned:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThis tells me that the wine is super bright, acidic and a little austere,\u201d says Ren Peir, wine director in residence at Nin Hao, in Brooklyn, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Jammy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jammy wines are characterized by ripe (or overripe) fruit flavor. They are often misidentified as \u201csweet\u201d by the uninitiated, according to David Cortes, lead sommelier at Majordomo, in Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Juice\/juicy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cA \u2018juicy\u2019 wine creates an unshakable perception of fruit on the palate, aided by a balance of acid and just enough tannins for a touch of textural density akin to, well, juice,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/juice-juicy-natural-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes Chau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Linear:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Imagine the \u201cline,\u201d here, connecting the first taste of the wine to its finish. That\u2019s a lip-smacker. It\u2019s \u201cjuicy, but has bite. She leaves you wanting more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Minerality:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A way to describe flavor (earthiness, saltiness, wet stone notes) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> texture (chalkiness). It\u2019s important to note that this is just a tasting term; a wine that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tastes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like flint or limestone was not necessarily grown in soil with those minerals present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Mouse\/mousy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A particular off-taste in certain bottles, and the wine flaw of our times, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/natural-wine-flaw-mouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Punch contributor John McCarroll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because adding sulfur dioxide, a naturally occurring antimicrobial and preservative, can remove mousiness, some critics have used mousiness to discredit natural winemaking as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Natural\/natty:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A contentious description for wines made with minimal intervention. \u201cI wish people would stop using the term \u2018natty,\u2019\u201d says Eitan Spivak of New York\u2019s Kabawa. \u201cIt sometimes misrepresents the nuanced, thoughtful decisions that winemakers make.\u201d It should be noted that \u201cnatural\u201d is a distinction about how a wine is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not how it\u2019s marketed. (\u201cNatural\u201d \u2260 \u201cnew age\u201d or \u201chip.\u201d) \u201cTraditionally made\u2014what we often call \u2018natural\u2019\u2014wines have been around for eternity, and for that reason, I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any chance they\u2019re going anywhere,\u201d Alice Feiring, an expert on the subject, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/alice-feiring-natural-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently told Punch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Parkerization:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The sum of impacts caused by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/robert-parker-wine-parkerization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Parker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a wine critic described, mostly by boomers, as \u201cthe father of wine criticism\u201d and heavily criticized, mostly by younger wine drinkers and those who found his taste globalizing and \u201csoulless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Pinard:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> French slang for \u201clow-quality red wine.\u201d Some consider the word distasteful. \u201cI find the term a bit reductive in relation to the hard work of winegrowers,\u201d says Yann Janvier, sommelier at Terra Restaurant in Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Patio pounder\/porch pounder: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A wine, often a cold one, that\u2019s ideal for drinking all day, outside. \u201cEasy, stupid\u2014not as in, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wine is dumb<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but, as in, you don\u2019t have to think about it,\u201d explains Cheslik. See also: crushable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Reduction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The phenomenon that happens when wine doesn\u2019t get enough oxygen in the winemaking process, which causes volatile sulfur compounds to present, giving off a smell (think rotten eggs or rubber). \u201c\u2018Reduction\/reductive\u2019 gets used too much,\u201d says Andrew Fortgang, co-owner of Le Pigeon and Canard in Portland, Oregon. \u201cIt is mentioned so much by wine pros that I think intermediate wine folks, and guests at restaurants, hear it, don\u2019t know what it is, and play along. What should wine professionals call themselves?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"new_article_block content-block\">\n<p><b>Reductive winemaking: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reductive winemaking, meanwhile, is the practice of intentionally limiting oxygen\u2014using stainless steel tanks, for example, and fermenting at colder temperatures\u2014in the winemaking process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Somm:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Literally short for \u201csommelier.\u201d In practice, it has pretty fratty associations; a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">somm<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is sort of \u201can analogue of the bad-boy chef,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/somm-sommelier-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as Punch contributor Miguel de Leon puts it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Today, wine pros are adopting new monikers, from purely descriptive (\u201cwine steward\u201d) to cheeky (\u201ccurator of vibes\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Splash:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Industry lingo for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/vip-px-splash-policies-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VIP (aka PX) treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at bars and restaurants, often a comped glass of sparkling wine to start the meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Steely:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWhen you have a reductive white wine that\u2019s obviously made in stainless steel &#8230; it\u2019s very linear, very angular, \u00fcbercrisp and meant to be drunk young,\u201d says Allerton-Hollier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Texture\/textural:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cortes finds it useful to describe white wines with complexity as \u201ctextural.\u201d He says: \u201cThe textural component of wine can come from winemaking techniques such as malolactic fermentation or aging wine in oak barrels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Tight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Typically referring to younger wines with tannins and acidity. Decanting can \u201copen up\u201d a tight wine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><b>Wine bar:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> OK, yeah, you know what a wine bar is. You also probably know the hallmarks of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/modern-natural-wine-bar-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cool New Modern Wine Bar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a chic bathroom, DJ nights, a lo-fi Instagram account). But \u201cwine bar\u201d today isn\u2019t just one thing. It, thankfully, no longer just means cheese plates.
