{"id":301363,"date":"2025-06-19T03:24:46","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T03:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/starmer-puts-uk-cabinet-on-alert-for-potential-us-attack-on-iran\/"},"modified":"2025-06-19T03:24:46","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T03:24:46","slug":"starmer-puts-uk-cabinet-on-alert-for-potential-us-attack-on-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=301363","title":{"rendered":"Starmer puts UK cabinet on alert for potential US attack on Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\">Your guide to what Trump\u2019s second term means for Washington, business and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=218bf78d-9343-403c-9a5d-5ae5614c0751&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Sir Keir Starmer has put his cabinet on alert for a possible US attack on Iran, as ministers discussed working with American forces in the event that Tehran threatened UK assets in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Just 24 hours after insisting Donald Trump had given no indication he was about to \u201cget involved\u201d in the conflict between Israel and Iran, the prime minister and his cabinet reviewed how Britain might respond in the event of a major escalation.<\/p>\n<p>UK officials said the situation was \u201cgrave and volatile\u201d, while Starmer\u2019s team discussed whether the president might seek to strike Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities from a joint US-UK air base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>The possible use of this base for US air strikes on Iran by B2 stealth bombers would draw Britain closer to the conflict. One UK official said there was not a clear \u201cyes or no\u201d answer to whether Washington would have to seek approval from Britain to use the base to launch an attack.<\/p>\n<p>Britain has so far stayed out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/middle-east-war\" data-trackable=\"link\">the Israel-Iran war<\/a> and is determined not to do anything that could lead to the closure of its embassy in Tehran, a key western diplomatic post in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>But Starmer on Wednesday discussed with ministers and military chiefs how Britain might respond if Tehran \u201cdirectly or indirectly threatened UK assets in the region\u201d, said one person briefed on the talks.<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting of a Whitehall emergency committee known as Cobra, they also reviewed the possibility of a US attack on Iran, according to officials briefed on the talks. Others who participated included intelligence bosses and US ambassador Lord Peter Mandelson.<\/p>\n<p>A Downing Street spokeswoman said after the committee meeting: \u201cMinisters were updated on efforts to support British nationals in the region and protect regional security, as well as ongoing diplomatic efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Lord Richard Hermer, attorney-general, declined to comment on reports in The Spectator that he had warned that Britain\u2019s participation in a US attack on Iran could be illegal and that UK forces could only be involved in defensive action.<\/p>\n<p>But one person briefed on the matter said: \u201cIf our assets are threatened, then we have a right to self-defence, with or without the Americans. RAF aircraft also provided assistance during a missile attack by Tehran on Israel last October.<\/p>\n<p>The UK also helped the US last year in military strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>Any US attack on Iran could potentially focus initially on the heavily reinforced Fordow nuclear site, which Israel lacks the bombs to destroy.<\/p>\n<p>US \u201cbunker busting\u201d bombs capable of penetrating Fordow must be launched from American B2 stealth bombers, and Washington positioned at least six B2-As at Diego Garcia in March as it increased pressure on Tehran to agree Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The UK last month signed a \u00a33.4bn deal to hand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2402978e-cf62-4a1e-8a0c-8bb85af85d8c\" data-trackable=\"link\">sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius<\/a>, while retaining a 99-year lease on the air base at Diego Garcia, the largest of the islands.<\/p>\n<p>Experts said the US could launch B2 attacks from a home base in Missouri, but the additional distance and refuelling needs would be an added complication to any mission.<\/p>\n<p>A UK government spokesperson said they would \u201cnot comment on hypothetical operations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, family members of British embassy and consulate staff in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem \u201chave been temporarily withdrawn as a precautionary measure\u201d, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said.<\/p>\n<p>That decision stands in contrast to the FCDO\u2019s current advice to UK nationals in Israel, who have been invited to register themselves with the British embassy or consulate but have not been told to leave the country.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" of people registering for advice and other consular help was \u201cin the low thousands\u201d, many of them dual UK-Israeli nationals.<\/p>\n<p>The FCDO has issued advice that it is still possible to leave using commercial land routes through Egypt or Jordan, but has not recommended that UK nationals try to exit Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur key message to British nationals is to follow the advice of
