{"id":300684,"date":"2025-06-18T15:48:01","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T15:48:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/japans-largest-bank-blinked-and-then-peatlands-burned-the-understory\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T15:48:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T15:48:01","slug":"japans-largest-bank-blinked-and-then-peatlands-burned-the-understory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=300684","title":{"rendered":"Japan&#8217;s largest bank blinked, and then peatlands burned &#8211; The Understory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Japan\u2019s largest bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), adopted a policy against peatland destruction, yet one of its bank subsidiaries continues to finance firms that, well\u2026destroy peatlands.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/forest-frontlines\/japanese-megabank-mufg-finances-massive-carbon-bomb\/?_gl=1*ln11m*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTM3MTkzNjgzNC4xNzUwMTg2NzQz*_ga_5DXDCWR1WZ*czE3NTAxODY3NDAkbzEkZzAkdDE3NTAxODY3NDAkajYwJGwwJGgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">raised questions<\/a> about the credibility of MUFG\u2019s zero-deforestation commitments given that it had provided hundreds of millions of US dollars in \u201cgreen\u201d financing to Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), an Indonesian palm oil and pulp &amp; paper conglomerate with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/74651\/under-the-eagles-shadow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">concealed control<\/a> over companies responsible for some of Indonesia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/press-releases\/massive-deforestation-in-borneo-destroying-orangutan-habitat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">very worst<\/a> cases of deforestation. RGE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/74651\/under-the-eagles-shadow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">denies<\/a> these connections.<\/p>\n<p>MUFG renewed our suspicions about its greenwashing when it acquired one of Indonesia\u2019s largest banks, Bank Danamon, yet seemingly failed to apply its environmental policies to Bank Danamon\u2019s client list, which includes Tunas Baru Lampung (TBLA), an agribusiness <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/forest-frontlines\/japanese-megabank-mufg-finances-massive-carbon-bomb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">responsible<\/a> for egregious acts of peatland destruction and fires in Indonesia. Source: AP News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">In the years following MUFG\u2019s majority acquisition of Bank Danamon in 2019, two companies controlled by TBLA converted around 11,000 soccer fields-worth of peatlands in South Sumatra for palm oil and sugarcane production. Peatland destruction is particularly destructive as it releases vast amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. Degraded peat is flammable, so it also turns the ground itself into a tinderbox.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, these two TBLA concessions saw huge peatland fires, releasing a carbon bomb of planet-warming gases into the atmosphere. The Indonesian government filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/dandapala.com\/opini\/detail\/klhk-gugat-penyebab-karhutla-rp-671-m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">civil suit<\/a> against a company controlled by TBLA in connection to these fires for environmental damages and economic losses. Despite this, TBLA remains a client of MUFG and Bank Danamon.<\/p>\n<p>If MUFG were indeed serious about its zero-deforestation policies, it would have done a basic risk assessment of Bank Danamon\u2019s clients back when it acquired the bank. Unfortunately, they didn\u2019t dig very deep\u2014or maybe didn\u2019t even dig at all.
