Dan O&#8217;Kane is an inventive and caring member of our community who is helping a deserving group of kids do just that.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2016, Dan and his wife, Laura, founded<a href=\"https:\/\/www.josiesgift.org\/\"> Josie&#8217;s Gift<\/a>. Through this organization, Dan creates personalized fishing rods for kids who are facing or have overcome medical challenges. Dan&#8217;s craftsmanship and attention to detail create extra-special moments for these kids who may be overlooked when planning an outdoor adventure. So far, Dan has handcrafted over 80 custom fishing rods, including a Big Bang Theory-themed rod and a Green Bay Packers rod.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Most notably, Dan&#8217;s first fishing rod was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.josiesgift.org\/history.html\"> the one he created for Josie<\/a>, the nonprofit&#8217;s namesake. Dan met 7-year-old Josie when he was working at UW Hospital, where Josie was a patient going through cancer treatment. Her compassion for all the other children at the hospital, despite her own circumstances, inspired Dan. Josie was a source of strength and encouragement to those frequenting the hospital; other children regularly stopped by Josie&#8217;s room as she lent an ear or led a pep talk before surgery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madcitydreamhomes.com\/uploads\/agent-40\/Josie\" s=\"\" gift.png=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"712\" height=\"401\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Josie&#8217;s fishing rod is sparkly pink and purple. She adored it and showed it off to anyone who would indulge her. She didn&#8217;t get the opportunity to use her custom fishing rod, but her enthusiasm for helping others and generous spirit live on in Josie&#8217;s Gift. In fact, five years ago, Josie&#8217;s Gift expanded to have an annual fishing day for kids like Josie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Join Dan, Laura, and the Josie&#8217;s Gift team for their upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.josiesgift.org\/kids-fishing-day.html\">Kids Fishing Day<\/a> on July 19th on Lake Winnebago.
