Maybe you\u2019ve spoken them yourself.<\/p>\n<p>If so, you were probably really, <em>really<\/em> right! But the challenge is that no one wants to be singled out as the one responsible for dropping the ball.<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s job is accountability anyways?<\/p>\n<p>In our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nathanmagnuson.com\/leadership-in-a-box\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Leadership-in-a-Box\u00ae<\/strong><\/a> Accountability program, one of the dynamics we talk about is that accountability actually requires 200%. Instead of 50-50 responsibility, each side needs to take 100% responsibility for three things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clarifying expectations<\/li>\n<li>Fulfilling agreements<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring outcomes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>50-50 responsibility leaves zero margin for error!<\/p>\n<p>I was right in the middle of sharing this dynamic in a client workshop when one of the team leaders jumped in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I\u2019m divorced<\/em>,\u201d she exclaimed. \u201c<em>I can tell you that 50-50 just doesn\u2019t work!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t quite sure whether to applaud or sympathize, but she was exactly right!<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what this looks like in action. (We call this the Magic Accountability Formula.) Great accountability includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WHO?<\/li>\n<li>Will do WHAT?<\/li>\n<li>By WHEN?<\/li>\n<li>How will we FOLLOW-UP?<\/li>\n<li>Do we have an AGREEMENT?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When BOTH PARTIES take 100% responsibility to clarify each element, accountability is easy.
