It was about not alienating people just because they don\u2019t agree with you. Jefferson wrote: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf man is to separate himself from all who do not think with him in all points, he must stand alone and aloof from all society. Do you have anything to prove this was an authentic quote? I\u2019d like to prove AI wrong!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I appreciated her skepticism, as that\u2019s my first response to a lot of quotes I see online. But I also know that AI answers can be worse than useless sometimes when it comes to history, like when ChatGPT told me John Adams was known for his wild, curly hair. So yeah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Listen to the episode here:<br \/><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/playlist.megaphone.fm\/?e=ARML2005264022\" width=\"100%\" height=\"200\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I knew I first found that Jefferson <a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/documents\/Jefferson\/03-18-02-0379\">quote<\/a> on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/\">Founders Online<\/a><\/em>, which is a fantastic website that\u2019s part of the National Archives and the University of Virginia Press and multiple documentary editing projects. It has thousands of transcribed letters from the founders\u2014the first 4 presidents as well as Hamilton, Ben Franklin, John Jay, and more. So I figured do a quick search, find the Jefferson letter where he said that, and share a link to vindicate myself and prove AI wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there was a problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I couldn\u2019t get <em>Founders Online<\/em> to load. When it finally did load, the search kept timing out. I\u2019d noticed the site had been slow for a couple weeks, and then I saw a note on the homepage: \u201cNote regarding Performance Problems, May 2025.\u201d The note read: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFounders Online is experiencing periodic degraded performance owing to extreme spikes in traffic caused by excessive and ill-behaved website crawling, probably associated with content scooping by AI platforms and other indexers. We are working on a viable fix within the constraints of our budget and server resources.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1277\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ploddingthroughthepresidents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Founders-Online-site.jpg?resize=700%2C395&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ploddingthroughthepresidents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Founders-Online-site.jpg?w=1262&amp;ssl=1 1262w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ploddingthroughthepresidents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Founders-Online-site.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ploddingthroughthepresidents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Founders-Online-site.jpg?resize=800%2C451&amp;ssl=1 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unbelievable. AI was calling me a liar and then hiding the very proof of my innocence. Is this how Sandra Bullock felt in <em>The Net<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the personal affront, Artificial Intelligence really was undermining history in two different ways: by providing inaccurate information, saying Thomas Jefferson didn\u2019t say that, and then <em>impeding access<\/em> to real information\u2013the actual quote.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I reached out to the folks behind <em>Founders Online<\/em> to find out more about what was going on, and I got a great response from Susan J. Spengler at the University of Virginia Press. She talked about what they\u2019re facing, and she also let me know this is a more widespread issue than I thought. In fact, j<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ust last week, the University of North Carolina\u2019s Libraries published a blog post called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/library.unc.edu\/news\/library-it-vs-the-ai-bots\/\">Library IT vs. the AI bots<\/a>\u201d about an unprecedented attack on the libraries\u2019 online catalog. There was so much traffic that it was shutting out students, during finals week. And it was being done in a weird way, spread out geographically and across different internet service providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To my knowledge, they still don\u2019t fully understand exactly what was happening, but according to that blog post, the consensus based on this happening lots of places is that this is part of a huge scraping operation building up LLMs, or large language models\u2013basically gathering all the information you need to train AI applications like ChatGPT. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Spengler:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe problem seems to boil down to AI bots that mimic human web behavior but then overwhelm the site, particularly and even especially search features. We aren\u2019t even sure the purpose is to crash the sites. Much like the UNC team saw, the bots seem to be running every variation of available searches to grab all the results, regardless whether or not they have already acquired the output of the search.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These bots didn\u2019t just go in, scrape the data, and get out like you\u2019re supposed to do in a heist movie. They scraped the same data in lots of different, wasteful ways that led to site-crippling traffic. As if whoever was doing this didn\u2019t care about doing it well, or the consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UNC blog post said it took a team of seven people and the UNC IT office a week to figure out how to stop the first instance. According to UNC\u2019s Tim Shearer, \u201cThere are lots of institutions that do not have the dedicated and brilliant staff that we have, and a lot of them are much more vulnerable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another part of the problem is that there are rules in place to prevent this kind of thing from being done and those rules are generally obeyed by site indexers like Google and Bing, but if you\u2019re a new or irresponsible AI company, you might ignore these rules and index pages that shouldn\u2019t be indexed, or overload sites in unscrupulous ways. Data is being pulled and used without permission, and these institutions and their human users are paying the price. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This AI behavior needs to be regulated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the very idea of regulating AI has become politicized.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The version of the \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill Act\u201d that the House recently passed <em>prevents states from regulating AI for ten years<\/em>. In terms of how much that technology can progress, ten years is a lifetime. The Senate changed that bit to say that states who try to regulate AI will be denied federal funding for broadband. It\u2019s still a mess, and the supposed reason they want to stop regulations is so they don\u2019t inhibit innovation; if there\u2019s a patchwork of different laws in each state that could make it harder for companies to put out new innovative AI products.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1278\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1278\" class=\"wp-image-1278 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ploddingthroughthepresidents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AI_moratorium.jpg?resize=580%2C180&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ploddingthroughthepresidents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AI_moratorium.jpg?w=580&amp;ssl=1 580w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ploddingthroughthepresidents.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AI_moratorium.jpg?resize=300%2C93&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AI regulation moratorium language from the House version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/1\/text\">One Big Beautiful Bill Act<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f states aren\u2019t allowed to regulate AI, then you\u2019re left with the federal government. <em>This<\/em> federal government. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far the Trump administration does not have a great track record of using AI responsibly. They used AI to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/news-trump-tariffs-generative-ai\/\">calculate global tariffs<\/a> which had to be rolled back, and then a government report from the \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d commission used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/29\/well\/maha-report-citations.html\">imaginary articles<\/a> as sources\u2014articles that never existed and were never published in the journals the report claimed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added to the misinterpretations of real data about childhood chronic disease in the report, it resulted in something too questionable to be trusted, which does nothing to help address actual threats to children\u2019s health. How can an administration that relies on AI to do its work without vetting it be trusted to rein in something that can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jonathanwai\/2024\/10\/09\/the-12-greatest-dangers-of-ai\/\">extremely dangerous<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we really have two threats here: Artificial Intelligence and Alternative Facts, teaming up to erase and rewrite history. Actually, let\u2019s make that three, because there is another very real threat to history. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These libraries and archival project resources, now facing new unprecedented technological attacks on their stability, are also facing an unprecedented <a href=\"https:\/\/current.org\/2025\/04\/doge-restructuring-of-neh-hits-documentary-and-archival-projects\/\">lack of funding<\/a>.
