His new one, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterstones.com\/book\/you-are-here\/david-nicholls\/9781444715460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You Are Here<\/a>,<\/em><\/strong> sees Marnie feeling stuck and Michael left by his wife. A determined mutual friend succeeds in getting them to take a walk together which, apparently, turns into something of an epic. \u2018A new love story by beloved bestseller David Nicholls, <em>You Are Here<\/em> is a novel of first encounters, second chances and finding the way home\u2019 says the blurb which may sound nothing to get particularly excited about but I\u2019m sure Nicholls\u2019s legions of fans will be delighted at the prospect. I certainly am.<\/p>\n<p>Spanning three days, Benjamin Myers\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alifeinbooks.co.uk\/2024\/08\/rare-singles-by-benjamin-myers-grief-is-the-price-of-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Rare Singles<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is about an American singer in his seventies who\u2019s accepted an <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-35426\" src=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Rare-Singles-195x300.webp\" alt=\"Cover image for Rare Singles by Benjamin Myers\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Rare-Singles-195x300.webp 195w, https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Rare-Singles.webp 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\"\/>invitation to headline a Northern Soul weekender in Scarborough having never set foot outside the US. Bucky\u2019s promising career was scuppered by a beating after a James Brown concert and an eighteen-month prison stint. He\u2019d recorded just four songs as a solo artist, one of which is a Northern Soul favourite, unbeknownst to him. Over the next three days, Bucky finds himself bemused by Yorkshire, desperate to ease his excruciating hip pain and saved by three capable women who offer the prospect of a very different future. I wasn\u2019t sure what to expect when I started it, but I grew to love this feelgood novel, so different from <a href=\"https:\/\/alifeinbooks.co.uk\/2019\/08\/the-offing-by-benjamin-myers-the-summer-that-changed-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Offing<\/em><\/a>. Julia\u2019s teenage daughter is off to college emptying the nest, her son Ben has been behaving erratically, then she bumps into an old, once dear friend she\u2019s not seen for two decades who makes a shocking announcement, all of which sends her into a tailspin. \u2018Following Julia over the course of a few tumultuous months, bookended by a birthday party and a wedding, and examining the fifty-plus years before, <em>Same as It Ever Was <\/em>examines the complete and complicated trajectory of one woman\u2019s life and asks what it takes to make \u2013 and to not break \u2013 a family\u2019 says the blurb, promisngly.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-35429\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"Cover image for The World After Alice by Lauren Aliza Green\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/The-World-After-Alice-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/The-World-After-Alice.jpg 310w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/The-World-After-Alice-186x300.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-35429\" src=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/The-World-After-Alice-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cover image for The World After Alice by Lauren Aliza Green\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/The-World-After-Alice-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/t9z6e6y4.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/The-World-After-Alice.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>More soberly, Lauren Aliza Green\u2019s debut, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/alifeinbooks.co.uk\/2024\/08\/the-world-after-alice-by-lauren-aliza-green-how-does-someone-survive-this\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The World After Alice<\/a>,<\/em><\/strong> sees the wedding of Alice\u2019s best friend to her younger brother twelve years after she took her own life. As the couple prepares for the ceremony, their extended families make their way to the venue where they will be spending three days in close proximity to each other, bringing a great deal of emotional baggage with them. All the characters find themselves re-examining how they might have played a part in Alice\u2019s decision but it\u2019s her brother who\u2019s borne the heaviest burden. There\u2019s a thread of almost farcical humour to lighten the narrative but inevitably this is a novel with a great deal of sadness at its heart. Documentary filmmaker Asya spends her days recording the locals going about their lives in their nearby park. Meanwhile, life goes on back home as the couple develops their own customs and rituals in their new home city. \u2018Unfolding over a series of apartment viewings, late-night conversations, last rounds of drinks and lazy breakfasts, <em>The Anthropologists<\/em> is a soulful examination of home-building and modern love, written with Ayseg\u00fcl Sava\u015f\u2019 distinctive elegance, warmth and humour\u2019 says the blurb. Very much like the sound of that.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it for July\u2019s first batch of paperbacks.
