Last Sunday, my friend and I arrived at the AO Arena\u00a0in Manchester. We were early.\u00a0The stage was small, adorned with bright-coloured green plants,\u00a0illuminated under the glare of lights\u00a0and\u00a0in the middle were\u00a0two stool-like chairs.\u00a0A\u00a0screen\u00a0to the left had\u00a0Tim Burgess\u2019 face on it,\u00a0a bar\u00a0was in the distance\u00a0and one or two people\u00a0were\u00a0meandering around the otherwise empty space.\u00a0This was not a typical gig. A bit like Tim\u2019s latest solo album\u00a0ironically named\u00a0\u2018Typical Music\u2019, there was nothing typical about the\u00a0venue or start to the evening\u00a0which\u00a0felt like\u00a0a quiet theatre in the depths of one of Manchester\u2019s largest railways stations.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0am reminded now,\u00a0writing this,\u00a0of all the other Tim Burgess\u00a0or Charlatans\u00a0gigs I have been to. Each one different\u00a0and never the same;\u00a0yet\u00a0every\u00a0time\u00a0I\u00a0want to return.\u00a0They say it\u2019s the people that make the occasion, and The Charlatans and Tim Burgess\u00a0community is very special indeed.\u00a0Even now, after\u00a017 years of going to his gigs, I meet fans that I\u2019ve never met before, each with their own unique story to tell.<\/p>\n

Just before the event started, two friends arrived and hugged\u00a0each other\u00a0tightly, but not before excitedly discussing\u00a0the\u00a0next\u00a0event\u00a0they\u00a0would be attending.\u00a0Would it be the Merch Market event on the\u00a025th\u00a0May in Manchester? The Charlatans\u2019 gig at\u00a0Castlefield\u00a0bowl on the\u00a05th\u00a0July? Or Kendal Calling music festival where\u00a0they\u00a0might\u00a0drink\u00a0coffee at Tim Peaks Diner? Maybe it\u2019ll\u00a0be all three.\u00a0One thing is for sure, by the time\u00a0Chris Hawkins walked on\u00a0stage\u00a0the audience was alive with friendly and excited chatter and the tone\u00a0was set for an unforgettable evening of conversation and song.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Tim\u00a0was introduced\u00a0to the stage\u00a0and emerged\u00a0as\u00a0The Charlatan\u2019s classic \u201cThe Only One I Know\u201d,\u00a0started to play.When\u00a0he saw Chris,\u00a0they\u00a0hugged\u00a0and\u00a0it\u00a0felt like we were about to witness two old\u00a0friends having a\u00a0long awaited\u00a0catch up. Their warmth\u00a0felt both touching\u00a0and\u00a0infectious.\u00a0The conversation\u00a0opened\u00a0with Tim\u2019s childhood. Coming from a small village\u00a0called Moulton near\u00a0Northwich, Tim described a cosy sounding start to life in which he gradually\u00a0encountered\u00a0different types of music. Unlike other pop stars, Tim\u00a0told us that he\u00a0didn\u2019t come from a musical\u00a0family.\u00a0However,\u00a0it was through family and friends\u00a0that he was introduced to records, both from knowing people who ran his local record shop and from going to gigs as young as 13, such as the\u00a0band Crass who played in his local Scout Hut.<\/p>\n

It was\u00a0interesting\u00a0to hear how Tim\u00a0went from immersing himself into the local gig scene, to\u00a0forming his first band Electric Crayons, to\u00a0eventually meeting The Charlatans and landing the\u00a0role as the band\u2019s frontman. Seemingly, Martin Blunt (founding member and\u00a0bass player)\u00a0set off to\u00a0tell\u00a0the original lead singer\u00a0(Baz Keatley)\u00a0that\u00a0he was out of\u00a0a\u00a0job, but before he had the chance,\u00a0Keatley told him he was\u00a0having second thoughts about\u00a0being in the band, and Tim\u2019s role\u00a0has\u00a0remained\u00a0the same for over\u00a0three\u00a0decades.\u00a0The band have\u00a0thirteen\u00a0studio albums\u00a0to their name\u00a0to date\u00a0and Tim\u2019s\u00a0solo career has seen him\u00a0produce\u00a0five\u00a0solo LPs,\u00a0his most recent release\u00a0Typical Music\u00a0(2022)\u00a0is out now on\u00a0the record label Bella Union.\u00a0Tim explained to Chris that he went to Nashville to record his second solo LP \u2018Oh No I love you\u2019 and that on this record, it was Kurt Wagner who\u00a0wrote the\u00a0lyrics,\u00a0while\u00a0he wrote the music.<\/p>\n

The Charlatans have endured much tragedy over the years. Speaking about\u00a0the death of\u00a0Rob Collins\u00a0in 1996,\u00a0Tim discussed how they \u201cassumed that was it, it must be all over now\u201d. But the\u00a0band stayed together.\u00a0Friend of the band Martin Duffy\u00a0of Primal\u00a0Scream\u00a0(who also sadly died\u00a03 years ago) stepped in to play keyboard for the band at\u00a0their\u00a0much-anticipated\u00a0Knebworth gig supporting Oasis.\u00a0And\u00a0When Tim moved to LA shortly afterwards,\u00a0leaving the rest of the band back in The UK\u00a0he\u00a0told\u00a0Chris:\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0knew if I was going to stay in the band, I\u2019d have to make the effort to make rehearsals\u201d. He then laughed as he said,\u00a0\u201cI was still always the first to arrive and Martin\u00a0was\u00a0always the last!\u00a0It\u2019s always been like that. Still is!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

The audience was engrossed in the conversation\u00a0between Chris and Tim,\u00a0but\u00a0I couldn\u2019t help\u00a0but start to\u00a0wonder\u00a0when we\u00a0would hear\u00a0some music. What might not be commonly known, is that Tim has recently started playing guitar\u00a0to live audiences (although he told us this\u00a0that\u00a0he\u2019s been playing guitar for years).\u00a0As he nervously\u00a0started to\u00a0warm up,\u00a0he was accompanied on stage by Helen O\u2019\u00a0Hara from\u00a0Dexy\u2019sMidnight Runners on violin.\u00a0Together they performed \u2018Jesus Hairdo\u2019 from The Charlatans\u2019 album \u2018Up to Our Hips\u2019.\u00a0It was a beautiful\u00a0stripped-back\u00a0rendition of the song,\u00a0enhancing\u00a0the melody and allowing\u00a0the tiny space to be filled with every word\u00a0he sang.\u00a0A few people started to mouth the words, singing quietly. It was a wonderfully meditative way to experience\u00a0this familiar much-loved track in a fresh and new way.<\/p>\n

The second song,\u00a0\u2018North Country Boy\u2019 was performed in a completely different key. Taken from the bands 5th\u00a0album \u2018Tellin Stories\u2019,\u00a0Tim revealed that this was\u00a0first played at Knebworth before\u00a0its release.\u00a0This song\u00a0reminds me ofsummer with the line \u2018everyday the sun comes out\u2019\u00a0and it\u2019s slow and hazy melodies. Tonight\u2019s version\u00a0sounded wistful, pensive and\u00a0almost melancholy which\u00a0suited the\u00a0dark,\u00a0quiet and serene nature of the setting.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

After the interval Tim and Helen played\u00a0just\u00a0two more songs, but not before Chris asked Tim about \u2018getting clean\u2019 and his\u00a0experiences of drug and addiction which Tim discussed with\u00a0candour and\u00a0humour:\u00a0\u201cI have an\u00a0addictive\u00a0personality\u201d he told us\u00a0before revealing\u00a0that he realised he needed to quit drugs for good when\u00a0it dawned on him\u00a0that he wasn\u2019t being true to himself anymore.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The talk\u00a0then\u00a0turned to Tim\u2019s\u00a0twitter listening parties\u00a0which became huge during the pandemic, and even included an interview with Paul\u00a0McCartney,\u00a0all hosted by Tim himself.\u00a0Fans would tune into twitter at 10pm and each evening a different album\u00a0from a different band or artist\u00a0was played and discussed. Band members would\u00a0discuss everything from where the music was recorded, what each song was about and sometimes answered\u00a0questions from fans as the\u00a0music played.Everyone from blur to Julia Holter,\u00a0Oasis and Franz\u00a0Ferdinand\u00a0took part, every evening it was someone new.\u00a0Tim explained\u00a0that\u00a0during lockdown when we were all confined to our homes that it was lovely to\u00a0experience this collective appreciation of music spanning generations and genres from around the world\u00a0to\u00a0escape what was going on around us at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

When Tim played \u201cYours. To. Be\u201d one of his most recent solo releases, Chris commented that \u201cSunday nights don\u2019t get better than this\u201d.\u00a0I have been fortunate enough to hear this song performed\u00a0twice before\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0opening\u00a0line \u201cSunday morning\u201d\u00a0seemed\u00a0to perfectly fit this\u00a0balmy Sunday in Manchester.\u00a0It\u00a0seemed to waft and float freely around the auditorium,\u00a0soothing the crowd\u00a0with\u00a0its\u00a0fusion of strings. If you get the chance to attend a Tim Burgess event this summer, you won\u2019t want to miss hearing this song. In my opinion it is poetry\u00a0set to music in the loveliest way possible.<\/p>\n

The audience seemed to really enjoy hearing from Helen o Hara who joined the conversation to\u00a0talk about how she came to work with him, describing him as a \u2018dream to work with\u2019\u00a0and also\u00a0revealing that: \u201cI\u2019ve never told Tim this before, but I was actually starstruck and nervous the first time we met\u201d. Tim smiled shyly before thanking her, because for him having been a fan of\u00a0Dexy\u2019s\u00a0Midnight Runners\u00a0since a child I got the feeling\u00a0he was equally as delighted to have been working with Helen in this way through\u00a0their mutual appreciation of each other\u2019s music. Helen even described how much she loved his recent album.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

For the fourth and final song\u00a0\u201cImpossible\u201d taken from Us and Us Only,\u00a0Tim took to the harmonica, but not before asking Chris to be his drinks roadie and pass him some water \u201cI\u2019ve been talking for ages!\u201d he laughed,\u00a0\u201cAnd my\u00a0mouth is full!\u201dhe was about to play harmonica\u00a0while\u00a0holding his guitar). It struck me at this point what an incredible role model Tim\u00a0is.\u00a0Earlier on in the evening he described how he \u201cpushes everything\u00a0as\u00a0far as\u00a0I\u00a0possibly can\u201d even though he just liked to chill at school. In fact, he\u2019d only\u00a0landed back in The UK from LA less than 48 hrs ago and hadn\u2019t\u00a0slept much.\u00a0However,\u00a0the thing about Tim is\u00a0that\u00a0he\u2019s always thinking outside of the box, reinventing the wheel and keeping the industry on its toes.<\/p>\n

Tim has been quoted as saying \u201cMusic can save people\u201d. He puts\u00a0a\u00a0lot of\u00a0energy into\u00a0helping\u00a0an\u00a0industry\u00a0that\u00a0he has long since been a part of\u00a0and\u00a0often comments that\u00a0what\u00a0he\u2019s doing for artists is\u00a0not about The Charlatans it\u2019s about the future generations of bands, and\u00a0he\u00a0campaigns about what he sees as the injustice of venues charging bands commission on selling their merchandise,\u00a0a vital part of earning any money at gigs in 2025.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

His next Manchester event\u00a0on Sunday 25th\u00a0May is part of the \u201chelp us help bands\u201d campaign which has\u00a0helped raise money for grassroots bands to\u00a0hire\u00a0recording spaces\u00a0and get\u00a0started. This event allows bands to sell their merchandise\u00a0without paying any fees. Never one for shying away from what he believes in, Tim has\u00a0promoted and supported unsigned and emerging artists for over two decades now, starting with his own record label\u00a0Ogenesis\u00a0and culminating in this very special event which\u00a0will range from\u00a0merchandise stalls to live\u00a0performances\u00a0including new\u00a0band Mich Dulce and Her Midnight Callers as well as\u00a0Manchester Indie veterans New Order,\u00a0Inspiral\u00a0Carpets and of course\u00a0Tim Burgess himself.
