[In the summer
\nof 1945<\/a>, Nazi scientists began arriving in the United States, recruited to
\nwork in the US government and eventually
\nits space program<\/a> as part of Operation
\nPaperclip<\/a>. But they weren\u2019t the first nor the only American Nazis by any
\nmeans, and this week I\u2019ll AmericanStudy a handful of others, leading up to a weekend
\npost on an interesting and fraught recent cultural representation of Paperclip.]<\/p>\n

On three
\nfamous figures who reflect the breadth and depth of American support for Nazis.<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Henry Ford: The automobile inventor and
\nentrepreneur wasn\u2019t just an American Nazi supporter\u2014he was apparently an
\ninfluence on Adolf Hitler himself. Between 1920 and 1927, Ford and his aide
\nErnest G. Liebold published <\/span>The Dearborn Independent<\/span><\/i><\/a>, a
\nnewspaper that they used principally to expound antisemitic <\/span>views and conspiracy theories<\/span><\/a>; many of
\nFord\u2019s writings in that paper were published in Germany as a four-volume
\ncollection entitled <\/span>The International Jew, the World\u2019s Foremost
\nProblem<\/span><\/i><\/a> (1920-1922). Heinrich Himmler wrote in 1924 that Ford was \u201cone of
\nour most valuable, important, and witty fighters,\u201d and <\/span>Hitler
\nwent further<\/span><\/a>: in Mein Kampf<\/i> (1925)
\nhe called Ford \u201ca single great man\u201d who \u201cmaintains full independence\u201d from
\nAmerica\u2019s Jewish \u201cmasters\u201d; and in a 1931 Detroit
\nNews<\/i> interview, Hitler called Ford an \u201cinspiration.\u201d In 1938, <\/span>Ford received<\/span><\/a> the Grand
\nCross of the German Eagle, one of Nazi Germany\u2019s highest civilian honors. <\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Charles Lindbergh: As I mentioned in <\/span>this post
\non Lindbergh<\/span><\/a>, the aviation pioneer likewise received a Cross of the German
\nEagle in 1938, this one <\/span>from German
\nair chief Hermann Goering<\/span><\/a> himself. Over the next two years, Lindbergh\u2019s
\npublic opposition to American conflict with Nazi Germany deepened, and despite
\nsubsequent attempts to recuperate that opposition as fear over Soviet Russia\u2019s
\ninfluence, Lindbergh\u2019s views depended entirely on antisemitic conspiracy
\ntheories that equaled Ford\u2019s. In a <\/span>September 1939 nationwide radio
\naddress<\/span><\/a>, for example, Lindbergh argued, \u201cWe must ask who owns and
\ninfluences the newspaper, the news picture, and the radio station, … If our
\npeople know the truth, our country is not likely to enter the war.\u201d Seen in
\nthis light, <\/span>Lindbergh\u2019s
\nrole as spokesman<\/span><\/a> for the <\/span>America First
\nCommittee<\/span><\/a> makes clear that that organization\u2019s non-interventionist
\nphilosophies could not and cannot be separated from the antisemitism and Nazi
\nsympathies of Lindbergh, Ford, and all those who took part in the 1939 Madison
\nSquare Garden rally. <\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Father Coughlin: As the tens of thousands of
\nattendees at that rally illustrate, American Nazism was much more than just a
\nperspective held by elite anti-Semites\u2014it was very much a movement. And like so
\nmany problematic social movements, it featured a demagogic voice to help spread
\nits alternative realities\u2014in this case, the Catholic priest turned radio host <\/span>Charles
\nEdward Coughlin<\/span><\/a>. Like any media figure who worked for many years, Coughlin said
\ndifferent things at different times; after the 1939 rally, for example, he
\nsought to distance himself, arguing in his weekly address, \u201cNothing can be
\ngained by linking ourselves with any organization which is engaged in agitating
\nracial animosities or propagating racial hatreds.\u201d But by that time, Coughlin
\nhad been publicly supporting <\/span>both Nazi
\nGermany<\/span><\/a> and antisemitic conspiracy theories for years; his weekly
\nmagazine, <\/span>Social Justice<\/span><\/i><\/a>, ran for
\nmuch of 1938 excerpts from the deeply antisemitic <\/span>Protocols of the Elders of Zion<\/span><\/i><\/a> <\/span><\/i>(as that link illustrates, a text that
\ncontributed directly to the Holocaust). Both Social Justice<\/i> and Coughlin\u2019s radio show were hugely popular,
\nillustrating that American Nazism and antisemitism were in the 1930s (as they
\nfrustratingly seem to be today) widespread views. <\/span><\/p>\n
