It\u2019s estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/epidemiology-and-psychiatric-sciences\/article\/prevalence-of-suicide-attempts-in-bipolar-disorder-a-systematic-review-and-metaanalysis-of-observational-studies\/494471CA6E53CECADA92AAF9246FDC5F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to half of those with bipolar disorder will attempt suicide<\/a>. (Although my personal feeling is that this is artificially low. People often don\u2019t want to admit to attempting suicide.) That\u2019s a very large number. More women will attempt suicide, but more men will <a title=\"Suicide Self-Assessment Scale \u2013 How Suicidal Are You?\" href=\"https:\/\/natashatracy.com\/mental-illness-issues\/suicide\/scale-suicide-suicidal-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">die by suicide.<\/a> Women will overdose while men will use firearms. More than half of these people will not leave suicide notes.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-10019\"\/><\/p>\n<p>We are lucky that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/suicide\/facts\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most suicide attempts fail<\/a>. Most people who attempt suicide will be rescued by others.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Does Shame Happen in the Wake of Suicide Attempts in Serious Mental Illness?<\/h2>\n<p>After a suicide attempt, many people are <a href=\"https:\/\/natashatracy.com\/mental-illness-issues\/suicide\/suicide-survivors-story-aims-save\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thankful they didn\u2019t die<\/a>. Many people who attempt suicide later realize that, at the moment they attempted suicide, <a href=\"https:\/\/natashatracy.com\/mental-illness-issues\/suicide\/difference-suicidal-wanting-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">death is not truly what they wanted<\/a>. (Although this isn\u2019t always true.) Many end up feeling ashamed of their suicide attempt. I know I felt great shame <a href=\"https:\/\/natashatracy.com\/mental-illness-issues\/suicide\/suicide-attempt-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">after my own suicide attempt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> I understand the shame that goes with doing something you later regret. I understand the shame of realizing you did something because of your mental illness. I understand the shame of acknowledging you admitted defeat at the hands of pain and depression.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is a Suicide Attempt a Moral Failing?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>A suicide attempt is a symptom, not a sin.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But <strong>a suicide attempt is not shameful.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A suicide attempt is a <a href=\"https:\/\/emedicine.medscape.com\/article\/286342-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">symptom of an illness.<\/a> It is no more shameful than sneezing from a cold. Attempting suicide is brutal, hard, and painful on you and <a href=\"https:\/\/natashatracy.com\/bipolar-blog\/loved-commits-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">those around you<\/a>. No one wants to see you die, see you gone. But the fact that for one moment you gave in to the pain isn\u2019t shameful, it\u2019s human.<\/p>\n<p>Those who do not know the pain may not understand. But sometimes you hit a wall. A wall of pain. And sometimes that wall is more than you can bear.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Are Not Who People Say You Are<\/h2>\n<p>Some people try to hurt you because you have attempted suicide. Some people try to use this symptom as evidence that you are, in some way, \u201cbad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But you are not bad. You are sick. Anyone who would use an illness to hurt another person is being abusive. Anyone who would try to use a suicide attempt as a weapon does not deserve a second thought. Or a first one for that matter. You are better than that. They are not worthy of you.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Replace Shame with Self-Compassion<\/h2>\n<p>Every one of us has done things we later regret. Some of us (most of us) have been complete assholes at one time or another. Humans are selfish, crass, hurtful, awful people sometimes. We\u2019re like that. We\u2019re wildly imperfect beings.<\/p>\n<p>But these mistakes make us human. Recognition of frailties is a strength. It\u2019s only after realizing what we don\u2019t like in ourselves that we can change it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Suicide Attempt Isn\u2019t the End of the World<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, a suicide attempt is horrible; a suicide attempt may run roughshod over your life; a suicide attempt may hurt those around you. A suicide attempt is painful, but it isn\u2019t the end of your world.<\/p>\n<p>Attempting suicide puts you in the company of many of your fellow crazies,* including me. If you look to the left and to the right of you, you will see <a title=\"Feeling Alone with a Mental Illness\" href=\"https:\/\/natashatracy.com\/bipolar-disorder\/depression-bipolar-feeling-mental-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thousands of people just like you.<\/a> Those who made the same choice. Those who now live to tell the tale.<\/p>\n<p>A suicide attempt is horrible, but it can be a part of your mental illness, and it is in no way the end.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Save Yourself Now<\/h2>\n<p>If you feel unsafe, don\u2019t wait, contact someone right now. Here is <a title=\"Get Help for a Mental Illness and Stop Suicide\" href=\"https:\/\/natashatracy.com\/get-mental-illness-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">information on how to get help.<\/a> Let these people help you. You need to <a title=\"Why Fight the Pain of Depression?\" href=\"https:\/\/natashatracy.com\/mental-illness\/depression\/continue-fight-pain-depression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fight your mental illness.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am extremely grateful I am still here.
