The new permanent exhibition is slated to open in October, upon the completion of a $40 million renovation.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of the experience, visitors will be able to scan a QR code and select three subjects that interest them, reports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/06\/04\/national-archives-museum-exhibit-the-american-story\/84028896007\/\"><em>USA Today<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Karissa Waddick. Then, as they meander through the 10,000-square-foot galleries, A.I. will display documents related to the topics they choose and add them to a virtual folder. When visitors leave the museum, they\u2019ll be able to share their personalized collection with the world.<\/p>\n<p>Spread across several galleries, the exhibition will feature digital display cases and media stations. Some will be equipped with glass that displays touchable, moveable animations overlaying the documents housed inside.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fusnationalarchives%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0vgPrD7GAwrxGjCK89iqsrFPb58jizxZkASjwDJrhJ9Supt7CTGpCF8PtThH6yxFLl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"608\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will also feature immersive \u201cmediascapes,\u201d which will showcase music, oral histories, photos and videos. Museumgoers will be able to imagine themselves as historical figures, making decisions with the help of archival texts, according to <em>USA Today.<\/em> They\u2019ll also learn how the collection was used to inform popular movies and books.<\/p>\n<p>Artifacts on view include photographs by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/ansel-adams-estate-condemns-adobe-for-selling-ai-generated-images-mimicking-the-photographers-style-180984473\/\">Ansel Adams<\/a>, a patent for the light bulb and a set of horseshoes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/elizabeth-ii-was-an-enduring-emblem-of-the-waning-british-empire-180979613\/\">Elizabeth II<\/a> gave to President George H. W. Bush in 1992. Curators are also developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/visit.archives.gov\/learn-us\/discovery-center\">Discovery Center<\/a> tailored to K-12 students and teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The new exhibition will focus on two million of the more than 13 billion records housed at the National Archives, which aren\u2019t always \u201cexciting visually for people,\u201d says Franck Cordes, the capital campaign project director at the National Archives Foundation, to <em>USA Today<\/em>. With the exhibition\u2019s interactive design, curators hope to make the documents more engaging and intriguing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese records are the evidence of who we are as a nation,\u201d Cordes adds. \u201cEverybody has an entry point to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Archives has long been working to make its vast library more accessible, including through projects to digitize its records. For example, volunteers with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/can-you-read-this-cursive-handwriting-the-national-archives-wants-your-help-180985833\/\">Citizen Archivist program<\/a> help transcribe centuries-old handwritten documents.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the National Archives Museum is highlighting the people and moments that shaped American history with an exhibition titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/visit.archives.gov\/whats-on\/explore-exhibits\/opening-vault\">Opening the Vault<\/a>.\u201d Launched ahead of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence next year, the show will feature a rotating selection of artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>The first rotation, on display now through August 6, focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/how-george-washington-wrote-farewell-address-180982346\/\">George Washington<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/benjamin-franklin-nations-first-newsman-180984281\/\">Benjamin Franklin<\/a>. Visitors can see handwritten documents, such as Washington\u2019s Oath of Allegiance to the United States and the account book he used to keep track of expenses while leading the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
