Barolo is a wine I love (I think everyone does right?), but I&#8217;ve never tried the Kirkland Signature version.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At just $19, it&#8217;s the cheapest Barolo I&#8217;ve ever seen. This is an exceptionally expensive wine varietal that usually commands 3 or 4 figure fees.<\/p>\n<p>Why is Barolo so expensive? <\/p>\n<p>Well, the Nebbiolo grapes are notoriously difficult to grow, the Barolo DOCG area is only 2,000 hectares in size, and the wine must be aged for at least 3 years. <\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the fact that it&#8217;s beautiful wine that&#8217;s great for aging and accumulating value in the cellar.<\/p>\n<p>So, how did I get on with the 2019 Kirkland Signature Barolo? The Barolo DOCG area is small, accounting for just 2,000 hectares or 4,940 acres. Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trediberri.com\/en\/barolo-geography\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" style=\"outline: none;\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">winemaking in the region is restricted to just 14 million bottles each year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Barolo is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes which are known for their thick skins and high tannin content.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, Barolo DOCG wine is required to age for a minimum aging of 36 months before release, including at least 18 months in wood. A renowned Barolo winemaker is making budget Barolo for Costco! Could this actually be a seriously good and seriously underpriced wine?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\">\n<h2 class=\"\" id=\"t-1705547432332\">Appearance<\/h2>\n<p>Upon examination, the wine presents a dark garnet color with considerable opacity. It looks reasonably light in body.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption\" data-css=\"tve-u-18d1b843439\"><span class=\"tve_image_frame\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"tve_image wp-image-26018\" alt=\"Barolo color in glass\" data-id=\"26018\" width=\"500\" data-init-width=\"500\" height=\"670\" data-init-height=\"670\" title=\"Barolo color in glass\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wineturtle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Barolo-color-in-glass.png\" data-width=\"500\" data-height=\"670\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 500 \/ 670;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wineturtle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Barolo-color-in-glass.png 500w, https:\/\/wineturtle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Barolo-color-in-glass-224x300.png 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\"\/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\">\n<h2 class=\"\" id=\"t-1705547432333\">Nose<\/h2>\n<p>The wine exudes a deeply earthy and herbaceous aroma, intertwined with notes of strawberry, cherry, leather, and a hint of balsamic vinegar.<\/p>\n<p>These scents combine to form a rich, aged bouquet that is both inviting and complex, characteristic of a well-aged wine.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" id=\"t-1705547432334\">Tasting<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s an elegant balance between acidity and tannins, both prominent in this wine.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the palate is greeted with a tingling acidity, followed by finely grained, smooth tannins that gently coat the mouth, and introduce a wonderful full flavor<\/p>\n<p>Notes include strawberry, raspberry, plum, balsamic vinegar and herbs, all beautifully encapsulated within the wine&#8217;s oak aging.<\/p>\n<p>Then that lovely acidity becomes prominent again, leading to a persistent, deep finish.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a delicate interplay at work here between the acidity and tannins that makes each sip a memorable experience. It&#8217;s a wine that&#8217;s elegantly balanced and incredibly enjoyable. How is this only $19?! It&#8217;s wonderful, it really is.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption\" data-css=\"tve-u-18d1b88335e\"><span class=\"tve_image_frame\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"tve_image wp-image-26020\" alt=\"Barolo front label\" data-id=\"26020\" width=\"700\" data-init-width=\"700\" height=\"500\" data-init-height=\"500\" title=\"Barolo front label\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wineturtle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Barolo-front-label.png\" data-width=\"700\" data-height=\"500\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 700 \/ 500;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wineturtle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Barolo-front-label.png 700w, https:\/\/wineturtle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Barolo-front-label-300x214.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"\/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\">\n<h2 class=\"\" id=\"t-1705547432335\">Score<\/h2>\n<p>I think you&#8217;ll have noticed that this Costco Barolo didn&#8217;t disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thrilled to score this wine a 9 out of 10, the highest rating on the Wine Turtle YouTube channel so far.<\/p>\n<p>Priced at an incredibly accessible (and undervalued) $19, this stands out as possibly the best of the Kirkland Signature Series wines (I&#8217;ll confirm once I&#8217;ve tried them all!).<\/p>\n<p>And while this is still very much an entry level Barolo, it is a wine of real quality that stands out at this price point.<\/p>\n<p>Its balance, depth of flavor, and delicate structure showcase the exceptional value it offers.<\/p>\n<p>Barolo is often referred to as the &#8220;King of Wines&#8221;, in my opinion this Costco version is the &#8220;King of Kirkland Wines&#8221; (so far anyway!).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re lucky enough to see this in your local Costco, you should buy as many as you can afford.
