On December 22, officials inspected a Turkish Airlines flight bound for Thailand and <strong>found a five-month-old gorilla\u2014<\/strong>later <strong>nicknamed \u201cOlive\u201d <\/strong>in Turkish<strong>\u2014crammed into a crude box barely bigger than his body.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Gorilla in a Filthy Shirt and Tiny Crate<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you think economy class is hell, Olive faced a far more nightmarish ordeal. When authorities opened the makeshift box, they found <strong>Olive wearing a filthy shirt with only a small dish and banana peels scattered across the box\u2019s floor<\/strong>. He endured nearly seven hours of terror and discomfort\u2014over 3,000 miles\u2014<strong>sitting in his waste, isolated and exposed to deafening engine noise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where Was <em>Olive\u2019s Mother<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In nature, gorillas nurture their young, and infants depend on their mother\u2019s milk for the first few years. Gorillas, who are endangered, live in tight-knit family groups and fiercely protect their babies. But Olive\u2019s mother was nowhere to be found on his flight to Thailand. <strong>Who snatched him from his mother\u2019s side to fly halfway around the world, and why did no one at the airport in Nigeria intervene?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Although his final destination is unclear, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/learning\/advanced\/2927482\/attempt-to-smuggle-gorilla-to-thailand-fails\">the Bangkok Post<\/a>, an animal importer and breeder in Bangkok is allegedly linked to the shipment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where Is Olive the Gorilla Now?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We don\u2019t know whether Olive was going to be a \u2018pet\u2019 or used for entertainment in Thailand, but he\u2019s safe and recovering from his stressful journey in Istanbul. In a statement this week, the regional director of Istanbul Nature Conservation and National Parks suggested that <strong>Olive may return to his homeland in Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>This Horror Happens All the Time<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>What happened to Olive is likely illegal, but shipping monkeys to laboratories is LEGAL!<\/strong> PETA has uncovered evidence that <strong>Africa\u2019s largest airline<\/strong>, Ethiopian Airlines, has <strong>shipped thousands of endangered monkeys halfway around the world<\/strong> for use in cruel and deadly experiments.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"385\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Monkey-in-crate-Dulles-demo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1127523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Monkey-in-crate-Dulles-demo.jpg 385w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Monkey-in-crate-Dulles-demo-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>These monkeys are packed into tiny wooden shipping crates\u2014like the one that Olive flew in\u2014and forced to sit in their own feces, urine, and blood before they are trucked to laboratories and killed.<\/p>\n<p>Federal authorities have alleged that a Southeast Asian black-market monkey-smuggling ring abducts wild-caught monkeys from their natural habitat and falsely labels them as \u201ccaptive-bred\u201d before they\u2019re flown to the U.S. A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/blog\/cambodian-monkey-smuggling-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0federal trial revealed<\/a>\u00a0that Ethiopian Airlines flew hundreds of these allegedly laundered monkeys from Cambodia into the hands of a U.S. laboratory supplier.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will You Help?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When we consider the individuals around us\u2014whether they\u2019re a baby gorilla named Olive or a frightened macaque ripped from their home\u2014we can recognize that everyone is someone who feels love, grief, joy, pain, fear, and hope.<\/p>\n<p>Please take a few seconds today to urge Ethiopian Airlines to stop shipping monkeys to laboratories for use in cruel and deadly experiments.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>More Articles Like This:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><input class=\"fooboxshare_post_id\" type=\"hidden\" value=\"1144493\"\/>\n\t<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ShareShare on Facebook PostShare on X ShareShare on LinkedIn 3 min read Turkish authorities sparked outrage when they discovered a baby gorilla languishing in the cargo hold of an airplane from Nigeria.
