RSF requested Bonta end the police violence by \u201c[filing] a civil lawsuit seeking a temporary restraining order against state and local police departments from firing projectiles at members of the press.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RSF has reported forty incidents of violence against journalists, including thirty-five by police officers. Police have been recorded using tear gas, pepper balls, and rubber bullets to disperse crowds, including occasionally appearing to target members of the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Los Angeles protests <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2025\/06\/us-california-governor-demands-national-guard-withdrawal-amid-mass-deportation-protests\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">started<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on June 6 in reaction to ICE mass deportation raids in the city. Protesters surrounded the Los Angeles Police Department building and started vandalizing it and heckling police. Protests in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7SVZUG7hRAY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">surrounding cities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ignited and clogged streets, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S65iiTZsL4I&amp;t=303s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">escalating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to burning cars, throwing projectiles such as rocks and fireworks at police, and looting stores. The Trump administration <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/06\/department-of-defense-security-for-the-protection-of-department-of-homeland-security-functions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">deployed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 2,000 California National Guard personnel in response to the protests the next day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a letter on June 8 demanding the withdrawal of the National Guard because the Trump administration illegally deployed them by violating the 10 US Code <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/10\/12406\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a712406(3)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> requirement to coordinate deployment orders through the state governor. On June 9, California filed <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2025\/06\/california-sues-trump-administration-over-national-guard-deployment-as-pentagon-activates-700-marines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">suit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in US District Court for the Northern District of California. The same day, the US Northern Command <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northcom.mil\/Newsroom\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4210889\/usnorthcom-statement-on-additional-military-personnel-in-the-los-angeles-area\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> its activation of 700 Marines to Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The district court issued a temporary stay ordering removal of the National Guard. However they were <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2025\/06\/us-ninth-circuit-blocks-removal-of-california-national-guard-from-federal-control\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">overruled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit without explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Newsom criticized Trump for the crisis at the Los Angeles protests in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/06\/09\/governor-newsom-suing-president-trump-and-department-of-defense-for-illegal-takeover-of-calguard-unit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Donald Trump is creating fear and terror by failing to adhere to the U.S. Constitution and overstepping his authority. This is a manufactured crisis to allow him to take over a state militia, damaging the very foundation of our republic. Every governor, red or blue, should reject this outrageous overreach. This is beyond incompetence \u2014 this is him intentionally causing chaos, terrorizing communities, and endangering the principles of our great democracy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Trump administration placed the blame on Newsom, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/1932205723011752082\">posting<\/a> on X:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>While Los Angeles burns\u2014officers ambushed, city in chaos\u2014Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, and Maxine Waters call the riots and insurrection \u2018peaceful.\u2019 These leftists don\u2019t care about your safety. They side with mobs.
