{"id":296118,"date":"2025-06-16T01:39:42","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T01:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/a-brief-history-of-the-netherlands-for-visitors\/"},"modified":"2025-06-16T01:39:42","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T01:39:42","slug":"a-brief-history-of-the-netherlands-for-visitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=296118","title":{"rendered":"A Brief History Of The Netherlands For Visitors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6b5a;\">1568-1648:<\/span>\u00a0The eighty years war WIth Spain<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"\/>\n<p>Before I explain about the eighty year\u2019s war with Spain, I think it\u2019s helpful to understand how the Netehrlands became part of Spain in the first place.<\/p>\n<h3>How The Netherlands became part of the Spanish empire<\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"\/>\n<p>During the middle ages, The Netherlands was governed by the Duke of Burgundy.<\/p>\n<p>When Charles (the Duke of Burgundy in 1506) also became king of Spain, the 17 provinces that made up The Netherlands also became part of Spain.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t too much of a problem at first. The Dutch provinces were basically allowed to have their own laws, rights, governments, and traditions under The Estates-General of The Netherlands. However, when Charles\u2019 son Philip II took over, things started to change.<\/p>\n<h3>The Dutch revolt<\/h3>\n<p>The Dutch weren\u2019t too pleased with the Spanish rule under King Philip II.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the Dutch population was <strong>Protestant<\/strong> at that time, whereas King Philip wanted his entire Kingdom to be Catholic. He also insisted on equal laws and rights everywhere in the kingdom. Mainly so he could tax better.<\/p>\n<p>This sparked the Dutch Revolt against King Philip II of Spain in a war that lasted 80 years.<\/p>\n<p>Though it wasn\u2019t 80 years of fighting. It was more like, some periods of battles, followed by truces, and eventually ended with the Treaty of M\u00fcnster on January 30th,<strong> 1648.<\/strong> In which the independence of the <strong>free Republic of The Seven United Provinces Netherlands<\/strong> was recognized.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, somehow the 17 provinces from before were reduced to only seven.<\/p>\n<h3>William of Orange-Nassau<\/h3>\n<p>One of the leaders of the war William of Orange-Nassau (also known as William The Silent), who is also the<strong> founder of the Dutch monarchy, or the Father of the Fatherland<\/strong>. The present Dutch royal family are descendants from William of Orange-Nassau.
