However, they frequently got it wrong:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Guard Images<\/strong>: Photos published by the San Francisco Chronicle of National Guard troops sleeping on floors were questioned online. California Governor Gavin Newsom reposted them, only to face backlash and accusations that they were AI-generated or misattributed.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grok\u2019s Response<\/strong>: Claimed the photos were from <em>\u201cAfghanistan in 2021\u201d<\/em> and rejected the Chronicle\u2019s reporting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ChatGPT\u2019s Take<\/strong>: Echoed the error, stating one photo was taken during Biden\u2019s Kabul airport evacuation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This led to further spread of disinformation across platforms like Facebook, Truth Social, and Twitter\/X.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-ai-fumbles\">Other AI Fumbles<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A repurposed image falsely attributed to civil unrest in Paramount, CA.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grok incorrectly insisted<\/strong> it was <em>\u201ca real photo from Paramount, Los Angeles, taken on June 7, 2025,\u201d<\/em> citing non-existent news sources like ABC7 and <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Even after being corrected (the image was actually from New Jersey), Grok refused to back down, claiming the <em>\u201cevidence strongly supports\u201d<\/em> its version.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-s-fact-checking-credibility-in-crisis\">AI\u2019s Fact-Checking Credibility in Crisis<\/h3>\n<p>Ken emphasized that this is not about political bias but about reliability. However, the ownership and political affiliations of AI platform owners (e.g., Elon Musk\u2019s dual ownership of Twitter and Grok) were noted as potential factors influencing output.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s perhaps most concerning is that people aren\u2019t testing these chatbots\u2014they\u2019re using them as trusted sources.
