We\u2019ve all been there, right? Everyone deserves to be loved. Being loved by someone <em>you<\/em> love is an amazing feeling that nurtures your spirit and opens your heart and mind to the beauty of life. If you aren\u2019t in a relationship and you want to be, you may feel frustrated and\/or impatient. But you know what they say? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1qOiNnK7AFg\">You can\u2019t hurry love<\/a>. You can, however, prepare yourself to be a good partner by learning about yourself, what you want, and what you need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teen<\/strong>: I\u2019m a 16 year old girl who never had a boyfriend before but I really want one. The thing is, I\u2019m kind of shy so I\u2019m not that good at flirting!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annie<\/strong>: It might be helpful for you to think about what kind of boyfriend you\u2019re looking for.\u00a0How about if you fill in the blank in this sentence?<\/p>\n<p>I want a boyfriend who is __________________________________________.<\/p>\n<p>Keep brainstorming until you run out of things that are true for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teen<\/strong>: I want a boyfriend who is: loyal, friendly, kind, respects boundaries, a good listener, and willing to try new things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annie<\/strong>: \u00a0That\u2019s a very thoughtful list of qualities. Good work. So tell me, do you already know someone with any or some of those qualities?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teen<\/strong>: There\u2019s one boy I know who actually has most of those qualities, but I\u2019m not sure I have a chance with him and I\u2019m not sure if he\u2019s single or looking for a relationship. He\u2019s about a a year older than me. We\u2019re in an after school club together, but I\u2019ve known him since last year outside of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annie<\/strong>: With all those positive qualities, he sounds like a really good guy. Keep building the friendship. Maybe the friendship will grow into a romance, but even if it doesn\u2019t, you are learning more about what you want and need in a relationship. That\u2019s important!<\/p>\n<p>btw, you might also be thinking about what you have to <em>give<\/em>, because a relationship is a 2-way street. It\u2019s not just about what you want\u00a0from someone, it\u2019s also about what you have to offer.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line, try not to get too hung up about the boyfriend thing. I understand this might be hard, especially if it seems like everyone in your school is coupled up. I\u2019ve been stuck in the \u201cI wish I had a boyfriend\u201d trap and I can honestly say wishing and hoping for love is a major waste of time, energy, and emotion that can be better spent doing a million other things. Love happens when it happens, and not a moment before. You can\u2019t plan for it or schedule it. But you can always <em>love yourself<\/em> more and focus on becoming the best version of <em>you<\/em>. That means exploring your interests and passions, developing new talents and skills, and putting your gifts to good use. And while you\u2019re at it, think about your goals in life. Dream big.
