We\u2019ve been back from the cruise now for a week and a half,
\nand although feeling rested after two weeks away from home, rolling about on
\nthe high seas, we\u2019ve come home to a mountain of work. Some of you may remember
\nme mentioning having a new kitchen<\/b> fitted, whilst we were away, and whilst it
\nwas obviously a good idea to have the work carried out in our absence, we
\narrived home to find the place in chaos. Like nearly all construction projects,
\nthe job over ran, and whilst not by much, it was still sufficient to cause more
\nthan its fair share of chaos.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Although the majority of the work was complete, many items
\nwere either out of place, or packed away in various boxes, and then tucked away
\nin the garden shed. The most significant issue was the amount of dust, which
\nwas perhaps inevitable given the poor condition of the room to begin with. The previous
\nowner of the property had a fixation for pine match-board,<\/b> which he used to line
\nthe kitchen walls, but what might once have been fashionable in the late 1970\u2019s<\/b>,
\nnow looked drab and decidedly outdated. It certainly made the room appear very
\ndark, a look accentuated by the fact that whilst pinewood starts off very light
\nin colour, it darkens significantly with age.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Moreover, the ceiling was in poor condition, a fact made worse
\nby this person\u2019s clumsy DIY<\/b> attempt at covering it in Artex.<\/b> The stuff was all
\nthe rage during the post-war years, but I have never been a fan of\u00a0 as it
\ncollects dust and looks untidy, even when professionally applied. Left to a bodging
\namateur, the finish is as bad as you can imagine, but fortunately all that has
\nchanged, with the installation of a nice, smooth replacement ceiling directly
\nover the old one. The same applied to the walls, as I\u2019m sure you can imagine the
\ndamage caused when it came to removing the pine match boarding. The kitchen now
\nhas smooth, professionally plastered walls and ceilings, along with a new vinyl
\nfloor <\/b>covering. Also included in the deal were the cupboards, drawers, work surfaces and appliances, including
\na gas hob, electric oven, and much to our delight, a dishwasher.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

We started the clear out of the old kitchen, several few
\nweeks before our holiday, a job that included the room that connects the space to
\nthe dining and office area. We spent a significant amount of time boxing-up crockery,\u00a0cooking\u00a0utensils and cutlery, taking
\nsome\u00a0 items to the charity shop, whilst disposing of others. It was a race
\nagainst time, as the deadline loomed for our Sunday <\/b>morning departure, but we managed by the skin of our teeth to clear the kitchen-cum-dining room, storing items we wanted to keep in our
\ngarden summer house. A few days before leaving, we handed over the keys to the two
\nbrothers we\u2019d engaged to carry out the work and then left son Matthew<\/b> in charge of
\nthe property.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

That worked well for the first week, but for the second one,
\nthe lad was dog-sitting for his cousin, looking after three very lively
\nspaniels. Rather him than us, as he certainly had his work cut out with these hounds,
\nbut it did give him a break, plus a change of scenery as well.\u00a0 <\/span>His cousin\u2019s house also provided Matthew <\/b>with
\na place to shower because halfway through the build project, our hot water
\nsystem developed a fault. The cause was later identified as a build up of
\nsludge, plus a malfunctioning pump, which was relatively easy to rectify. This
\nisn’t the first time that something like this has happened during our absence,
\nbut in this instance we\u2019re fairly certain that replacing a radiator in the
\ndining room and thereby disturbing the sludge that had built up in the system, was
\nthe cause of the incident. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It was straight back to work on Monday<\/b> morning, but fortunately
\nmy in-tray, or should that be inbox, wasn\u2019t too full, although on the home front it\u2019s
\nback to the clutter and the \u201cjoy\u201d<\/i><\/b> of sorting through several decades of
\naccumulated junk. I made a rather half-hearted effort before we went away, but
\nnow I have some time to go through what has been haphazardly stored in the
\nshed. I trust that Mrs. PBT <\/b>will do the same, as she tends to keep many items,
\nbut I get the impression that this time around she will grasp the opportunity,
\nand finally let go of things she no longer requires, or indeed desires. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

That\u2019s more than enough domesticity for now, but in spite of
\nthe upheaval remain convinced that we did the right thing by having our kitchen replacement
\ncarried out whilst we were away from the property. And as things slowly get
\nback to some semblance of normality, I shall have more time for the pleasurable
\nthings in life, such as trips to the pub. I\u2019ve only had time for a couple of
\npub visits, so far, one of which involved some excellent Goacher\u2019s<\/b> beer, in one
\nof their tied pubs- the Rifle Volunteer<\/b>, in Maidstone.<\/b> Closer to home, there
\nare several pubs that are due to re-open following either refurbishment, or a change
\nof ownership. So, some interesting times in the pub trade, as well as things
\ncloser to home.<\/p>\n
