The federal organization, along with attorneys general for Illinois and Minnesota, are alleging that the company engages in practices that keep farmers from being able to make repairs on equipment they own.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, this is another salvo in the <span><\/span>. The complaint states that John Deere engages in dubious practices, like incorporating software into farm equipment, to dissuade people from trying to fix stuff on their own. Additionally, the suit points to \u201cdecades\u201d of unlawful behavior that pushes farmers to the company\u2019s authorized network of dealers for repairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIllegal repair restrictions can be devastating for farmers, who rely on affordable and timely repairs to harvest their crops and earn their income,\u201d FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a press release. \u201cThe FTC\u2019s action today seeks to ensure that farmers across America are free to repair their own equipment or use repair shops of their choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The suit goes on to allege that Deere makes \u201cthe only fully functional software repair tool capable of performing all repairs\u201d on its equipment, which was only made available to official dealers. These dealers allegedly charge higher prices than independent shops, giving the company unlawful monopoly power. Farmers have long maintained that they can conduct basic repairs on equipment, but the computers lock the systems from working again until an officially licensed technician does their thing. This thing, allegedly, is simply flipping a software switch.<\/p>\n<p>The company <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/john-deere-right-to-repair-agreement-143035364.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:says it supports customers\u2019 right to repair equipment;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>. It even signed a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/files\/AFBF_John_Deere_MOU.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:memorandum of understanding;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> with the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) in 2023 that was supposed to make its software, tools and documentation available to farmers and independent repair shops. It doesn\u2019t look like that actually happened, as the suit alleges it \u201ccontinues to unlawfully withhold a fully functional repair tool from equipment owners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit seeks to \u201cstop Deere\u2019s anticompetitive conduct\u201d by mandating access to its software repair tool, in addition to \u201cother repair resources available to authorized dealers.\u201d Nathan Proctor, PIRG\u2019s Right to Repair Campaign Director, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/lina-khans-ftc-is-suing-john-deere-to-break-its-repair-monopoly-2000550664\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said in a statement to Gizmodo;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a> that \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t tolerate companies blocking repair.
