That experience helped me to understand, years later, the cycle of power and control inherent to domestic violence, enabling me to avoid future abusive relationships and foster healthy connections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I owe this understanding to the support and education I received from a domestic violence organization. I went on to co-found an organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/sahiyo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Sahiyo)\">Sahiyo<\/a>, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which focuses on ending female genital mutilation\/cutting in countries around the world, which involve some of the same elements of power and control as gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<p>Like many nonprofits, my group was affected by the Trump Administration\u2019s attempted <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2025\/02\/trump-funding-freeze-domestic-violence-nonprofits\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (federal funding freeze)\">federal funding freeze<\/a> on organizations that provide services to victims of gender-based and domestic violence. That freeze, while brief, ignited fears about the future of our organization, which for fiscal year 2024 drew 43 percent of its funding from federal grants.<\/p>\n<p>We were forced to ask ourselves: Will we be able to maintain our current operations? Will our funding disappear overnight? Most importantly, do we remain silent, or speak out and risk further consequences?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of those who work in these areas, I know, are altering website content, obscuring ties to marginalized communities such as trans youth and racial minorities, and downplaying diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives due to a fear of losing funding.<\/p>\n<p>It is not an unwarranted fear. For several months earlier this year, information on funding opportunities was <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2025\/02\/office-violence-against-women-removes-funding-opportunities\/#:~:text=The%20Department%20of%20Justice%20Office%20on%20Violence,directs%20visitors%20not%20to%20finalize%20any%20applications.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (removed)\">removed<\/a> from the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) website. A few funding notices were re-released in early May, but with language which made clear that funding requests for programs that serve LGBTQ+ or immigrant\/refugee populations will no longer be allowed\u2014further putting the overall health and wellbeing of our communities in harm.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, in early March, the <a href=\"https:\/\/acf.gov\/cb\/focus-areas\/child-abuse-neglect\/nccan\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect)\">National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/futureshealthconference.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Futures Without Violence Conference on Health)\">Futures Without Violence Conference on Health<\/a> were both abruptly cancelled. These conferences are crucial for advocates to connect, share experiences, and learn effective strategies. I fear more such cancellations are forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p>The administration\u2019s rhetoric further undermines the movement to end violence. Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/04\/national-sexual-assault-awareness-and-prevention-month-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (proclamation)\">proclamation<\/a> in early April for National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month exemplifies this: \u201cOne of the leading causes of sexual violence over the last four years has been the invasion of illegal aliens at our southern border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This statement is blatantly false. Most victims of sexual assault are harmed by someone they know; <a href=\"https:\/\/rainn.org\/articles\/sexual-assault#:~:text=Who%20are%20the%20perpetrators%3F,sexual%20violence%20or%20acquaintance%20rape.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (eight out of ten)\">eight out of ten<\/a>\u00a0instances of rape are committed by someone known to the victim. Furthermore, immigrants face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tahirih.org\/news\/understanding-the-intersections-of-sexual-assault-and-immigration-status\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (higher rates)\">higher rates<\/a> of sexual violence than natural-born citizens and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/debunking_the_myth_of_immigrants_and_crime.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (less likely)\">less likely<\/a> to commit crimes. The proclamation serves to maintain power and advance false narratives.<\/p>\n<p>Organizations working in gender-based violence know these dynamics intimately. We support clients by assuring them they are not alone and providing them with resources to escape abusive situations. Sharing our stories is essential to counter these false narratives, advocate for funding and policies like the Violence Against Women Act, and protect vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n<p>In just five months, the Trump Administration has undone years of cooperation between the federal government and nonprofits like mine. But social justice advocates are speaking out. More than 625 organizations recently <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualviolence.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Sign-on-Letter-to-AG-Bondi-expressing-concern-DOJ-Funding-for-DV_DV_SA_Stalking.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (urged)\">urged<\/a> Attorney General Pam Bondi to protect federal funding for victim services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe undersigned local, state, and national service providers have been anguished and panicked to receive recent notices terminating their federal grants,\u201d the letter said. \u201cWithout federal funding many of these organizations will close leaving communities less safe, with reduced access to victim services, law enforcement assistance, and prevention programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We are at a pivotal moment. To ensure that all women and girls can access services to live free from violence, Congress must advocate for accountability and continue to implement and enforce laws like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/103rd-congress\/senate-bill\/11\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (Violence Against Women&#x2019;s Act)\">Violence Against Women\u2019s Act<\/a>, which provides funding for organizations focused on gender-based violence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking out is not easy, but social justice advocates and the public at large must share stories of our work and experiences to connect with legislators and advocate for those we serve. We must speak loudly, proudly, and defiantly.
