{"id":293273,"date":"2025-06-14T18:30:35","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T18:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/american-history\/when-a-historical-collision-becomes-a-tragedy-history-is-now-magazine-podcasts-blog-and-books\/"},"modified":"2025-06-14T18:30:35","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T18:30:35","slug":"when-a-historical-collision-becomes-a-tragedy-history-is-now-magazine-podcasts-blog-and-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=293273","title":{"rendered":"When A Historical Collision Becomes A Tragedy \u2014 History is Now Magazine, Podcasts, Blog and Books"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A depiction of the bridge on opening in 1883: <em>Bird&#8217;s-Eye View of the Great New York and Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Display of Fire Works on Opening Night<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If you\u2019ve been blessed with the chance to see the last visually-stunning scene in Martin Scorsese\u2019s cinematic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/gangs-of-new-york-ending-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\">marvel<\/a><em>Gangs of New York<\/em>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0217505\/\" target=\"_blank\">2002<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200awhich was a gorgeous time-lapse walk through the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge and the evolution around it through the centuries\u200a\u2014\u200athen you were no doubt immersed in the depiction of the development of New York but also the changing landscape of Green-Wood Cemetery\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/notanotherbrooklynblog.com\/2020\/05\/12\/green-wood-cemetery\/\" target=\"_blank\">overlooking<\/a>\u00a0the East River.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Nearly one hundred and twenty\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/meade-and-lee-at-gettysburg.htm\" target=\"_blank\">people<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbslearningmedia.org\/resource\/ush22-soc-nycdraftriots\/the-bloodiest-race-riot-in-us-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">perished<\/a>\u00a0during the Draft\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/American-Civil-War\/Conscription-and-the-New-York-City-draft-riot\" target=\"_blank\">Riots<\/a>\u00a0of 1863. The country was in the midst of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/American-Civil-War\" target=\"_blank\">American<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/American-Civil-War\" target=\"_blank\">Civil<\/a>\u00a0War\u200a\u2014\u200aand the Union needed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/153230\/150_years_ago_army_takes_on_peacekeeping_duties_in_post_civil_war_south#:~:text=In%20May%201865%2C%20there%20were,were%20a%20mere%2020%2C117%20Soldiers.\" target=\"_blank\">troops<\/a>. The Army of Northern\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/meade-and-lee-at-gettysburg.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a>\u00a0had been beaten at Gettysburg\u200a\u2014\u200aand General George Meade was under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/meade-and-lee-at-gettysburg.htm\" target=\"_blank\">scrutiny<\/a>\u00a0for not pursing Lee\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/civil-war\/battles\/gettysburg#:~:text=Instead%2C%20the%20defeated%20general%20fled%20south%20with,trap%20Lee%20and%20force%20a%20Confederate%20surrender.\" target=\"_blank\">Army<\/a>. General Ulysses S. Grant who would take command of the Union Army in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/20223\/lieutenant_general_grant_takes_command\" target=\"_blank\">1864\u200a<\/a>\u2014\u200ahowever\u200a\u2014\u200ahad other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/ulysses-s-grant-s-path-to-victory-the-1864-overland-campaign.htm#:~:text=Grant%2C%20who%20strove%20to%20find%20a%20winning,to%20wage%20war%20became%20the%20foremost%20objective.\" target=\"_blank\">ideas<\/a>. Grant was committed to win the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/special-message-the-congress-winning-the-war-with-japan\" target=\"_blank\">war<\/a>\u00a0as quickly as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/ulysses-s-grant-s-path-to-victory-the-1864-overland-campaign.htm\" target=\"_blank\">possible<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/quizlet.com\/182667113\/us-history-114-flash-cards\/\" target=\"_blank\">No<\/a>\u00a0army under a Confederate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookelandisd.net\/page\/open\/3446\/0\/Chapter%252016%2520Section%25205%2520Reading.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">banner<\/a>\u00a0would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/quizlet.com\/182667113\/us-history-114-flash-cards\/\" target=\"_blank\">never<\/a>\u00a0again\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookelandisd.net\/page\/open\/3446\/0\/Chapter%252016%2520Section%25205%2520Reading.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">invade<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/battle-gettysburg-turning-point-civil-war#:~:text=Though%20the%20Confederate%20general%20would,when%20combined%20with%20Ulysses%20S.\" target=\"_blank\">north<\/a>. Their attempt at a decisive victory on northern soil to entice European countries like France\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ldhi.library.cofc.edu\/exhibits\/show\/liverpools-abercromby-square\/britain-and-us-civil-war#:~:text=However%2C%20the%20popular%20majority%20in,the%20North%20and%20the%20South.\" target=\"_blank\">and<\/a>\u00a0Britain to join the aid of the south had failed. The Union Army would utilize conscription to replenish their ranks and not everyone was eager to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/billofrightsinstitute.org\/essays\/the-draft-and-the-draft-riots-of-1863#:~:text=Most%20Union%20troops%20in%20and,the%20divisions%20within%20the%20Union.\" target=\"_blank\">enlist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A few weeks ago, not long after 8:00 P.M.,\u200athe Mexican Training Ship <em>Cuauhtemoc<\/em> lost\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/brooklyn-bridge-mexican-navy-ship-05-18-25-hnk#:~:text=The%20ship%2C%20the%20Cuauht%C3%A9moc%2C%20was%20carrying%20277,with%20knowledge%20of%20the%20investigation%20told%20CNN.\" target=\"_blank\">power<\/a>\u00a0on the East River and slammed into the Brooklyn Bridge killing two people and injuring nineteen. Masts were broken on the two-hundred seventy-seven\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/brooklyn-bridge-this-day-in-history-today-built\/1350965\/\" target=\"_blank\">person<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/post\/mexican-navy-ship-hits-brooklyn-bridge-emergency-response-training-boat-nyc\/16453075\/#:~:text=Authorities%20say%20the%20boat%27s%20captain%20lost%20control,span%20itself%20did%20not%20sustain%20structural%20damage.\" target=\"_blank\">vessel<\/a>\u00a0but it was successfully determined that the Bridge did not\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadsbridges.com\/safety\/news\/55291198\/brooklyn-bridge-ship-strike-fuels-safety-concerns\" target=\"_blank\">sustain<\/a>\u00a0any damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Although the Brooklyn Bridge was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Mby1ExNn-hg\" target=\"_blank\">designed<\/a>\u00a0by John A. Roebling\u200a\u2014\u200ahis daughter-in-law (Emily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistory.org\/blogs\/emily-warren-roebling-beyond-the-bridge\/?ref=untappedcities.com#:~:text=But%20when%20Washington%20A.,scholarly%20accounts%20and%20public%20memory.\" target=\"_blank\">Warren<\/a>\u00a0Roebling) was essential in keeping it on track for completion when her husband\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wams.nyhistory.org\/industry-and-empire\/labor-and-industry\/emily-warren-roebling\/\" target=\"_blank\">Washington<\/a>\u00a0Roebling became ill. It would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coloredconventions.org\/mary-ann-shadd-cary\/womens-rights\/howard-university\/\" target=\"_blank\">be<\/a>\u00a0more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/brooklyn-bridge-this-day-in-history-today-built\/1350965\/\" target=\"_blank\">than<\/a>ten\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amightygirl.com\/blog\/%3Fp%3D25975\" target=\"_blank\">years<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamesmaherphotography.com\/new-york-historical-articles\/brooklyn-bridge\/\" target=\"_blank\">until<\/a>\u00a0the Brooklyn Bridge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coloredconventions.org\/mary-ann-shadd-cary\/womens-rights\/howard-university\/\" target=\"_blank\">was<\/a>\u00a0finally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coloredconventions.org\/mary-ann-shadd-cary\/womens-rights\/howard-university\/\" target=\"_blank\">completed<\/a>\u00a0and opened. The 43-year old Mexican Navy Training Vessel ARM Cuauht\u00e9moc\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/mexican-tall-ship-was-underway-less-than-5-minutes-before-crashing-into-brooklyn-bridge\" target=\"_blank\">dates<\/a>\u00a0back to 1982.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Back at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn\u200a\u2014\u200awhich has roots going all the way back to 1838\u200a\u2014\u200awhen it began life as a final resting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.green-wood.com\/about-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">place<\/a>\u00a0for overcrowded churchyards. It\u2019s nearly 480 acres are home to more than 550,000\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nylandmarks.org\/explore-ny\/green-wood-cemetery\/\" target=\"_blank\">graves<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200aincluding some of the most prominent 19th century families of New York which includes the Roosevelt\u2019s and also famous people like Leonard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.green-wood.com\/green-woods-history-and-archives\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bernstein<\/a>. The cemetery holds both Confederate and Union casualties, as well as Revolutionary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/visit\/heritage-sites\/green-wood-cemetery#:~:text=New%20York&amp;text=Sixteen%20Union%20generals%2C%20including%20Henry,strategic%20importance%20in%20the%20battle.\" target=\"_blank\">War<\/a>soldiers. It\u2019s Gothic Revival Gates designed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?cs=0&amp;sca_esv=fa723bccb4ce9e36&amp;q=Richard+Upjohn&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiEgYTW9ryNAxXhD1kFHWubOY4QxccNegQIBBAB&amp;mstk=AUtExfDnlXucKpHQwJSrCAOf9RVNuAoKzpzhu_Y2kTQsZdTUEDCjZtMWhIuTM63LZYpiTl7ujEmu9pMakaADLCN0f-Ydwc3gH-8F7zUX0rJc_jcsupHnk-tBoPiUj0jWbpZ_Izw&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Upjohn<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200aprovide the warmth of a welcome in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hdc.org\/buildings\/green-wood-cemetery-gates\/#:~:text=Green%2DWood%20Cemetery%20Gates%20*%20ARCHITECT:%20Richard%20Upjohn.%20*%20DATE:%201861%2D1865.%20*%20STYLE:%20Gothic%20Revival.\" target=\"_blank\">summer<\/a>\u00a0months to this day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">For both the United States and Mexico\u200a\u2014\u200athe collision a few weeks ago wasn\u2019t just a collision.
