My daughter Lia, tiny but mighty, stomped off after I said no to another cookie.\u00a0And in that moment, every part of me tensed. My chest, my jaw, my breath. I could feel the heat rising.<\/p>\n
The words weren\u2019t about the cookie. They were about everything. And let\u2019s be honest, this really isn\u2019t the first or last time it happened.<\/p>\n
When Your Child Says Something That Hurts<\/h2>\n
There\u2019s something about being told \u201cyou\u2019re the worst\u201d by your own child that touches a raw, tender place inside.<\/p>\n
For many of us, especially if we were raised in homes where obedience equaled love, hearing that kind of phrase from our child can ignite a deep, unconscious fear:
\u201cAm I failing them?\u201d<\/em>
\u201cDo they even love me?\u201d<\/em>
\u201cAm I messing this up?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nBut the truth is \u2014 and it\u2019s something I remind the parents I work with (and myself) almost daily:<\/p>\n
When a child says something hurtful, they\u2019re not trying to hurt you. Heck, it\u2019s not even about you.\u00a0<\/strong>
They\u2019re trying to be heard.<\/p>\nWhat\u2019s Really Going On When Kids Say \u201cYou\u2019re the Worst\u201d<\/h2>\n
At its core, \u201cYou\u2019re the worst mom ever!\u201d is an expression of frustration, powerlessness, or emotional overwhelm. Children don\u2019t yet have the tools to say,
\u201cI\u2019m disappointed and I wish you would say yes,\u201d or \u201cI feel so helpless right now that I want to scream.\u201d<\/p>\n
So instead, they reach for the biggest emotional weapon in their toolbox. Not because they\u2019re cruel \u2014 but because they\u2019re desperate to feel seen.<\/p>\n
I remember a moment with my son Ilay, who\u2019s now 9. He was maybe five or six, and I\u2019d just canceled a playdate because he was too exhausted to function. He glared at me and said, \u201cYou\u2019re the meanest mommy in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
And in that second, I almost snapped. It was already a long day and my own nervous system wasn\u2019t into that playdate either, I admit.<\/p>\n
But I paused. Took a breath. Put my hand on my heart.
(That\u2019s one of my go-to nervous system resets.)<\/p>\n
Then I got down to his level and said:
\u201cWow. You\u2019re really upset. It sounds like you\u2019re sad and disappointed \u2014 and maybe even angry with me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nHe crumpled. Not in defiance \u2014 in relief. Or even:<\/p>\n
\u201cThat hurt to hear, love. And at the same time, I care so much about what\u2019s making you feel this way. Can we figure it out together?\u201d<\/p>\n
This isn\u2019t about \u201cletting them talk to you like that.\u201d It\u2019s about building a relationship where they learn to express those same feelings with more skill \u2014 over time, through you<\/em>.<\/p>\nWhat Not to Say (Even If You Want To)<\/h3>\n
We\u2019ve all been there. The words fly out of their mouth and we want to say:<\/p>\n
