Recreating Dilla\u2019s Timing, PPQN Nudge & DAW Latency Calibration<\/h3>\n

For those hoping to emulate Dilla\u2019s magic, below is a simplified breakdown of his approach. We\u2019ve also added a few music production tips from Big Noise MPC that will help you refine your own beat-making techniques, and calibrate your DAW system:<\/p>\n

01. Play around with these parameters to adjust feel\u2026 Set the tempo somewhere between 82 and 92 BPM.
02. Place odd and even hi-hats on different tracks and nudge the 2nd track forward) to adjust swing \/ groove to taste.
03. Play or nudge the snare drums<\/a> slightly early (back) to push the beat forward, adjust until hats and snares feel right!
04. Play or nudge the kicks late (forward) to create a laid-back groove that contrasts with the early snares or rim shots.
05. If you\u2019re using a DAW instead of hardware, make sure you Calibrate The System Timing<\/a> \u2026all DAW\u2019s it\u2019s critical!
06. Doubling or quadrupling your BPM will provide 2x or 4x the \u201cnudge\u201d resolution, giving greater timing accuracy.
07. Audio transformers<\/a> help post 2000 era digital Beat Machines and DAW\u2019s sound larger and more analog.<\/p>\n

These subtle shifts in timing are what make Dilla\u2019s beats feel alive. They breathe in a way that\u2019s not rigidly locked into a grid, yet they remain cohesive and musical. Other things to be concerned about\u2026 Regarding the MPC X, One & Live, Nudge shifts the event 4 PPQN (pulses per quarter note), actually only 240 PPQN. One PPQN \u201cevent shifting\u201d is only available under TC (time correction) Shift Timing, and is affected by the Quantize setting. When adjusting the feel between drums and sample chops, grab all the drum events, use Nudge to get close to the feel you want. Click and hold the mouse on a Note \/ Event and you will see it\u2019s position. For example, you Nudge the note\/s between 1:1:20 \u2013 75 and 1:1:24 \u2013 75 (75 = note length), but you feel like 1:1:22 \u2013 75 is the sweet spot. Use Time Correction, Shift Timing and set to 22. You can click on the Note again to verify its position. True 960 PPQN \u201cNudge\u201d results in amazing musical timing and feel! You can find PPQN display settings under Edit, Preferences, Sequence, Edit. We will discuss this in a future article.<\/p>\n

With older hardware workstations, latency is usually not an issue. When using newer DAW\u2019s and Controllers you should always calibrate<\/a> your system timing! The Akai MPC X, One and Live are DAW\u2019s when connected to your computer and need to be calibrated. Providing sample accurate recording of audio, and latency free recording of virtual and MIDI instruments. You can find these settings under Edit, Preferences, Audio Device, Latency Adjust. Post 2000 era music systems usually sound thin and digital. Using Audio Transformers<\/a> and VST\u2019s like Inphonik RX950<\/a> and\/or Kazrog True Iron<\/a> can significantly add analog flavor and weight to your tracks.<\/p>\n

Sampling Mastery: Dilla the Crate Digger<\/h3>\n

Another essential element of J Dilla\u2019s production was his unmatched skill in sampling. As a lifelong record collector and crate-digger, he had an encyclopedic knowledge of music. His intimate love for old vinyl records allowed him to flip samples in ways no one else could. Dilla would often take obscure jazz or soul records and completely transform them. For example, he took James Brown\u2019s \u201cKing Heroin,\u201d which is in 3\/4 time, and turned it into a 4\/4 beat. He also sampled Herbie Hancock\u2019s \u201cCome Running to Me\u201d and flipped it into a seven-bar loop, creating a polyrhythmic masterpiece. His ability to take a sample and deconstruct it into something new and unexpected was a testament to his deep understanding of both music and rhythm. Dilla didn\u2019t just use samples\u2014he reimagined them.<\/p>\n

Polyrhythms, Tempo Changes, and Puzzle-Solving<\/h3>\n

Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of Dilla\u2019s production was his use of polyrhythms and tempo changes. He would often slow down or speed up samples within a single track, creating contrasts that felt both jarring and natural at the same time. Questlove, one of Dilla\u2019s frequent collaborators, once described Dilla\u2019s process as akin to solving a 10,000-piece puzzle. The way Dilla layered sounds, played with timing, and manipulated samples was so intricate that it felt like he was assembling a musical puzzle that only he could solve.
