The Bad Guys 2<\/a>\u201d at Annecy. It\u2019s \u201cbigger, better and badder.\u201d Certainly, the exclusive preview proved oe of the best received of sneak-peeks to date at the French animation mega-fest, reactions at which are often echoed in box office worldwide. The film will be released on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve been incredibly happy with what we\u2019ve been cooking,\u201d said director Pierre Perifel at the presentation.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ll elevate the heist genre to action comedy,\u201d added his co-director \u2013 \u201cRobin to his Batman, Dumb to his Dumber\u201d \u2013 JP Sans, recalling his love for the original book that felt like \u201cReservoir Dogs,\u2019 with animals, for kids.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt was a little hard to adapt for kids. There\u2019s a lot of blood and a lot of fuck-yous, so we went more for an \u2018Ocean\u2019s Eleven,\u2019 \u2018Snatch,\u2019 \u2018Baby Driver\u2019 type of adaptation. The first film has a bit of that heist, gangster genre feel. We had the planning shot, the cool crew shot, the going undercover shot, the split screen shot, the crazy-trap-that-comes-out-of-nowhere-and-complicates-things-for-our-heroes shot.\u201d They were joined on stage by producer Damon Rossm and composer Daniel Pemberton.<\/p>\n
\n\tWhile Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos) and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) are back, the team wanted to bring \u201cnew characters, new stakes, new life, and a new story.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cOne of the things we love about these graphic novels is that the author plays with the genres, and we thought it\u2019d be amazing to carry this spirit into the franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tReferencing James Bond, \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d and \u201cThe Fugitive,\u201d said Perifel, the idea was to go \u201creally cinematic and theatrical. That meant we had to raise the stakes.\u201d As well as push the anime style.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tIn the first film, Bad Guys go from bad to good. But it\u2019s not the end of their problems. \u201cIt turns out re-entering society proves very hard for our guys. They start to doubt that change.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tStruggling to find jobs as ex-convicts and framed for a crime they didn\u2019t commit, suddenly, they are forced to do one last job: by Bad Girls.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tThat includes Susan aka Doom, a wry raven that\u2019s even more sarcastic than Snake, which is why he falls for her \u2013 \u201cBecause\u00a0<\/em>she\u2019s cold-hearted and sarcastic,\u201d laughed JP Sans. The character is voiced by Natasha Lyonne.<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cHer and Marc Maron recording together\u2026 It was magic. We couldn\u2019t use a lot of the takes, because they went too far. It was so dirty.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tRounding up the team is Bulgarian wild boar Pigtail \u2013 voiced by \u201cBorat 2\u201d Maria Bakalova \u2013 and a snow leopard Kitty Cat (Danielle Brooks). Soon, they are off, ruining wrestling matches, a billionaire\u2019s wedding or even a rocket launch.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re not only amazing actors, they\u2019re great at comedy. And a lot of them are amazing at improv, so we set out to continue what was done in \u2018Bad Guys 1\u2019 and try to record them together as much as we could. There was a lot of ad lib and a lot of it stayed in the film. Pierre and I probably ruined about a third of the takes because we were laughing too hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe audience seemed to agree, welcoming the over-the-top action sequences, Pemberton\u2019s insights about the soundtrack \u2013 and especially the news about that scandalous Maron-Lyonne banter \u2013 with glee. During the presentation,\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0overheard one fan whispering: \u2018It\u2019s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tAnd as for that otherworldly ending that will lead the main characters further than ever?<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s BAD,\u201d assured Perifel, with Sans adding: \u201cWe called it: \u2018Eat it, Vin Diesel\u2019!\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tDuring an interview later that day, Perifel discussed Bad Guys\u2019 struggles more thoroughly.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201c[At first] Wolf is not as cool as he used to be. He\u2019s trying to figure out his place in this society, in this new role as a \u2018good guy.\u2019 If the first one was a redemption story, this one is also a reinsertion story,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWhat Wolf wants more than anything is being accepted and not being treated as the villain of every story \u2013 as the big bad wolf, right? It doesn\u2019t work. People are afraid of him: \u2018He\u2019s an ex-con, an ex-thief, he\u2019s gonna rob me or eat me.\u2019 That\u2019s what happens to him and his crew until someone gives him a chance \u2013 except that person is also a villain.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt makes him reflect a little bit. \u2018Did I make the right choice? Life was so fun when I was a bad guy.\u2019 Now, he\u2019s just trying to line up job interviews. It\u2019s not easy to change and sometimes, you\u2019re tempted to go back to your comfort zone, except that zone doesn\u2019t exist anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe first film was a \u201clightning in a bottle,\u201d he reminisced.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThere was this tone that appeals to adults, because we\u2019re honoring a genre they recognize, and then something for children: the silliness of a shark and all these physical gags. I think that sophistication of the story, combined with stupidity, makes for something very appealing. It was also a little fresher, frankly, than what we\u2019ve been seeing for a while in DreamWorks Animation and in Hollywood animation in general.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tSadly, he won\u2019t be releasing \u201cinappropriate\u201d ad libs between Lyonne and Maron \u2013 who recently made headlines after announcing the end of his legendary podcast \u2018WTF<\/a>\u2018 \u2013 anytime soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re close friends, these two. Natasha\u2019s been in the business for so long and she\u2019s an absolute talent. And Marc is one of the funniest persons I know, but he wouldn\u2019t even crack a smile. He\u2019d be super dry. He\u2019s so smart. So smart,\u201d said Perifel.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWhen you\u2019re surrounded by world-class actors and comedians, you can\u2019t help but be inspired. What they do is so difficult. I mean, try to stand behind a mic and be funny. At one point, we asked Craig Robinson to play the piano, scream and sing at the same time. He had no idea what he was going to do when he walked in, and then just went for it. Who does that?!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tHowever, the question remains \u2013 after blasting their characters into space, how far can they still go?\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe can go really, really far. What happens in the books, it\u2019s pure madness. We could never do it in films, but there\u2019s still plenty of room for being outrageous.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tOr for parodying reality: a billionaire\u2019s nuptials \u2013 with Jeff Bezos currently reading to tie the knot in Italy \u2013 or much-publicized space launches.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe had no idea that was going to happen. Then Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX was all over the news, so now we have MoonX. Obviously, we\u2019re spoofing that. We were trying to wink at the real world, but without it being too heavy-handed. But the timing when it comes to our release is insane. It couldn\u2019t be better,\u201d he laughed.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cLook, it\u2019s such a fantastic sandbox to work with. We have these animal characters in a human world that\u2019s someone grounded, but they do crazy stuff, and the audience is up for it. And we\u2019ll keep on going.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
