This simple blackberry cobbler recipe is virtually a mix &amp; dump kind of dessert! It can be thrown together in minutes and then you can just let it bake and do its thing. Make in a cast iron skillet or 8&#215;8 baking dish. Either way it will be devoured. It\u2019s crispy and chewy around the edges, and soft and sweet in the middle, loaded with fresh blackberries! You\u2019ll know its done when the batter bakes up around the blackberries and is all hot and bubbly and browned to your liking. There is no egg in this recipe so it can easily become vegan friendly!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveandmango.com\/images\/uploads\/2022_08_26_easy_blackberry_cobbler_2.jpg\" alt=\"Easy Blackberry Cobbler\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-a-cobbler\">What Is a Cobbler?<\/h2>\n<p>What exactly is blackberry cobbler? Everyone has their own idea of what a cobbler is.  Cobblers are really easy fruit desserts typically made with a biscuit-like topping. Traditionally speaking though, cobbler is a baked fruit dish that\u2019s topped with a biscuit-like top.  When baked, the biscuits create a \u201ccobbled\u201d look, similar to a cobblestone street.  If we are getting technical, my recipe isn\u2019t a true cobbler by definition.  It\u2019s more like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveandmango.com\/strawberry-rhubarb-ricotta-skillet-buckle\">buckle<\/a> with a cake like topping. In a buckle, a thin cake-like batter is poured into a pan and topped with fruit that bakes into the mixture. The name of this kind of cobbler is a <strong>Texas-style blackberry cobbler or a southern style cobbler<\/strong>. A Texas-style cobbler is a buttery cake speckled with fresh fruit or berries and bakes up with a buttery snack cake. The coolest part is that the berries start on top and as the cake bakes, they move towards the middle, and the bottom and the cake develops a buttery golden top!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveandmango.com\/images\/uploads\/2022_08_26_easy_blackberry_cobbler_3.jpg\" alt=\"Easy Blackberry Cobbler\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-youll-need-to-make-this-old-fashion-blackberry-cobbler\">What You\u2019ll Need to Make this Old Fashion Blackberry Cobbler:<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick run-down of the ingredients you\u2019ll need to make this cobbler recipe. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card below for specific amounts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blackberries:<\/strong> I recommend using fresh blackberries, but you can use frozen ones if that is all you can find. That being said, fresh berries \u2013 especially during the summer months \u2013 will have more flavor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Granulated Sugar:<\/strong> Is used to sweeten up the crust and the blackberry filling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Butter:<\/strong> You can\u2019t have a cobbler recipe without butter! Used unsalted butter &#8211; for a nuttier flavour brown the butter in a saucepan to get a caramel \/ nutty flavor. It\u2019s an extra step and an optional one but worth the effort<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lemon zest:<\/strong> Adds a nice pop of flavor to this old fashioned blackberry cobbler.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Milk:<\/strong> We usually use 2% however whole milk or even buttermilk can be used. You can also use a non dairy milk for a vegan option<\/li>\n<li><strong>All purpose flour:<\/strong> 1 cup flour is used in this recipe however make this a gluten free blueberry cobbler substitute gluten free 1-1 all purpose flour<\/li>\n<li><strong>Baking powder:<\/strong> Helps the batter to rise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vanilla:<\/strong> Adds a burst of flavor to the cobbler<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spices:<\/strong> I like to add a pinch of ground cinnamon and salt for flavour\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-kind-of-fruit-to-use\">What Kind of Fruit to Use:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>fresh<\/strong> &#8211; is best<\/li>\n<li><strong>frozen<\/strong> &#8211; I recommend thawing before using and draining them well<\/li>\n<li><strong>canned<\/strong> &#8211; if you are thinking peaches &#8211; canned drained ones can work<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anything<\/strong> that you\u2019d use in a fruit snack cake, or make a cobbler with, would work well here to make blackberry cobbler &#8211; peaches, nectarines, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, blueberries you name it\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveandmango.com\/images\/uploads\/2022_08_26_easy_blackberry_cobbler_4.jpg\" alt=\"Easy Blackberry Cobbler\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-make-this-easy-homemade-blackberry-cobbler\">How to Make this Easy Homemade Blackberry Cobbler:<\/h2>\n<p>You won\u2019t believe how easy it is to make such an iconic dessert! This is not only one of those super quick desserts, but it\u2019s also made with very few ingredients. Basically, all you do is make a quick batter of only an handful of ingredients, pour it into a pan, and top it with macerated fruit. Bake until the toppings is puffed up and golden and the blackberries\/ fruit is bubblingServe it warm or cooled topped with whipped cream or a side of vanilla ice cream. Here is the simple step by step instructions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Toss blackberries with sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest and allow to sit and macerate &#8211; mash them a little gently to get their juices started,  while you preheat the oven<\/li>\n<li>Whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, vanilla and milk. Stir in melted butter to flour mixture<\/li>\n<li>Pour the batter into a well-greased casserole dish. I like to use an 8\u00d712 pan for this recipe you can easily make this in a 9 inch skillet or a 8 inch square baking dish or casserole dish too<\/li>\n<li>Then add the blackberries evenly on top of the batter. They will sink in a little bit, which is totally fine!<\/li>\n<li>Sprinkle more sugar on top if you wish, which will create a nice crackly topping.<\/li>\n<li>Bake for 45 minutes Or until toppimg is golden and fruit is bubbling.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveandmango.com\/images\/uploads\/2022_08_26_easy_blackberry_cobbler_5.jpg\" alt=\"Easy Blackberry Cobbler\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"storage-reheating-and-freezing-instructions\">Storage, Reheating and Freezing Instructions<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Store<\/strong>: This Southern Blackberry Cobbler can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To Reheat<\/strong>: Leftovers simply warm up in the microwave or reheat the whole casserole covered in foil in a 350 degree oven until warmed through 15-20 minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Freezing<\/strong>: Store baked cobbler in the freezer for up to 3 months.
