So for the 250<sup>th<\/sup><br \/>\nof that momentous military moment, I\u2019ll AmericanStudy a handful of iconic<br \/>\nRevolutionary War figures, leading up to a special weekend post on that<br \/>\nhistoric anniversary!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 106.5pt;\">On three<br \/>\ngroundbreaking historical novels that reflect the evolution of young adult<br \/>\nliterature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 106.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">1)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=kQKx7tomrfAC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\"><i>Johnny<br \/>\nTremain<\/i><\/a> (1943): Esther Forbes\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/winner\/johnny-tremain\">Newbery Medal-winning novel<\/a><br \/>\nfollows its title character from his life in 1773 as a 14 year old<br \/>\nsilversmith\u2019s apprentice (a career cut short when he suffers a debilitating<br \/>\nhand injury early in the novel) through his gradual connection to the Sons of<br \/>\nLiberty and participation in the Boston Tea Party (among other events),<br \/>\nbuilding to a climax set against the April 1775 battles of Lexington and<br \/>\nConcord. Although Forbes creates Johnny\u2019s 1770s Boston with depth and nuance,<br \/>\nthere\u2019s never any doubt that the Sons are on the right side of history, a<br \/>\nthread that likewise climaxes in the novel\u2019s concluding section with a moving<br \/>\nspeech from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.u-s-history.com\/pages\/h1204.html\">James Otis<\/a><br \/>\n(whom the other Sons had often dismissed as an insane old man) about the<br \/>\nRevolutionary sacrifices that will be necessary and appropriate so \u201cthat a man<br \/>\ncan stand up.\u201d <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Johnny Tremain<\/i> is,<br \/>\nlet\u2019s say, a Revolutionary historical novel for the Greatest Generation era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 106.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">2)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><i><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=QNbY0nGUD6oC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">My<br \/>\nBrother Sam is Dead<\/a><\/i> (1974): James Lincoln Collier and Christopher<br \/>\nCollier\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/winner\/my-brother-sam-dead\">Newbery<br \/>\nHonor-winning<\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/books\/my-brother-sam-is-dead\/\">National Book<br \/>\nAward nominated<\/a>!) novel offers a far more murky and (often) dark vision of<br \/>\nthe Revolution. The narrator, Tim Meeker, is torn between his loyalist father<br \/>\nand Continental Army soldier brother in the early years of the Revolution;<br \/>\nwhile we might expect transformations or reunions from a young adult novel,<br \/>\ninstead Tim\u2019s father is abducted by pirates and dies of cholera on a prison<br \/>\nship, one of Tim\u2019s friends is decapitated by the British, and Sam is eventually<br \/>\nexecuted by the Continental Army (for stealing cattle, a crime for which he had<br \/>\nbeen framed). This is a world where not only are loyalties divided and choices<br \/>\nuncertain, but death and brutality seem to await regardless of what choices one<br \/>\nmakes; when Tim reveals in the conclusion that he has been writing the book<br \/>\nfrom 1826, his survival seems to be the novel\u2019s version of a happy ending.<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"> My Brother Sam is Dead<\/i> is, let\u2019s say, a<br \/>\nRevolutionary historical novel for the Vietnam War and Watergate era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 106.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">3)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><i><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=6imeB4Zy48cC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">The<br \/>\nAstonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Volume I: The Pox<br \/>\nParty<\/a> <\/i>(2006): M.T. Anderson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/books\/the-astonishing-life-of-octavian-nothing-traitor-to-the-nation-vol-1-the-pox-party\/\">National<br \/>\nBook Award-winning<\/a> novel, the first in a two-volume series (the second, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=R6WFO4BxyD4C&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">The<br \/>\nKingdom on the Waves<\/a><\/i>, was published in 2009), is the story of a<br \/>\nuniquely talented African American slave in Revolutionary Boston who finds<br \/>\nhimself and his mother used (and she killed) for social and medical experiments<br \/>\non race, escapes slavery and joins the Continental Army, and eventually (in the<br \/>\ncourse of the series) joins the British forces in Virginia instead due to his<br \/>\nopposition to American slavery. The novels wed Gothic tropes (Octavian\u2019s Boston<br \/>\nhome is very much a Gothic haunted house, for example) to revisionist histories<br \/>\n(his Massachusetts slaveowners are in league with Virginia planters to pursue<br \/>\ntheir racist agenda, complicating our narratives of both American slavery and<br \/>\nthe Revolution), with the result a historical fantasy that imagines a far<br \/>\ndifferent nation and world than either of the prior novels had. <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing<\/i><br \/>\nis, let\u2019s say, a Revolutionary historical novel for the multicultural and Obama<br \/>\nera. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Special<br \/>\npost this weekend,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Ben<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">PS.
