UK-based gene editing startup Phytoform<\/a> will collaborate with ag giant Corteva<\/a> to explore AI\u2019s role in boosting disease resistance capabilities in corn.<\/p>\n

The two parties will use Phytoform\u2019s CRE.AI.TIVE platform<\/a>, which employs machine learning to identify small changes to DNA sequences in plants that could bring beneficial impacts if activated.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s platform introduces \u201cminimal and accurate changes\u201d to the plant without introducing foreign DNA, allowing it to bypass the \u201cGMO\u201d label.<\/p>\n

In the case of the Corteva partnership, CRE.AI.TIVE will search through \u201cmillions of potential variations in DNA control regions\u201d in plants and select the most effective for building resilience to two of the most common diseases for corn.<\/p>\n

While the companies will not yet publicly reveal which diseases those are, Phytoform cofounder William Pelton reiterates that they are \u201ctwo of the biggest\u201d diseases impacting corn production.<\/p>\n

The companies will work together to optimize gene expression of two native genes that \u201care key to disease resistance\u201d in corn.<\/p>\n

\u201cCorteva had these genes in their germ plasm, so the disease resistance was basically there but inactive,\u201d he tells AgFunderNews<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s exactly where we can help, and without creating GMO traits. We can help them fine tune their existing genome to activate those genes and confer that disease resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond R&D<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The partnership also marks Phytoform\u2019s first deal with a major corporate.<\/p>\n

Beyond that, for Phytoform, which Pelton co-founded in 2017, the partnership is also a big step in terms of expanding the platform to new crops and species. Phytoform has previously worked with potatoes and tomatoes.<\/p>\n

Corn is one of the most-produced crops in the world and prone to a number of different diseases<\/a>, including Gray Leaf Spot, Common Rust, and various leaf blights.<\/p>\n

The partnership with Corteva enables Phytoform to address a much more widely grown species. \u201cIt\u2019s demonstrating that we can actually work across many different species, and that means a lot in terms of the impact we can have,\u201d says Pelton.<\/p>\n

While Pelton doesn\u2019t explicitly promise a commercial product will come out of the partnership, he indicates this as a possibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s almost like a step beyond just R&D. We\u2019re very confident that we\u2019ll be able to activate these genes and deliver something that\u2019s commercially viable. There\u2019s always risk in that process but the idea is that we\u2019re basically taking that discovery work out of the lab and getting it into the field.
