The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation\u2019s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is calling on all Americans to urge their Members of Congress to pass two urgently needed bills: the\u00a0<\/span>National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, sponsored by Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28)\u00a0and Sen. Chris Coons (DE), and the\u00a0<\/span>Access to Counsel Act<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07)\u00a0and Sen. Alex Padilla (CA).<\/span><\/p>\n In response to\u00a0<\/span>President Trump\u2019s newly issued travel ban targeting 19 mostly Muslim and African nations<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, it is more urgent than ever that Congress act to prevent future presidents from abusing immigration authority to impose blanket bans rooted in prejudice\u2014and to guarantee detained travelers the right to speak with an attorney.<\/span><\/p>\n \ud83d\udce2 CLICK HERE:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>TELL CONGRESS TO PASS THE NO BAN ACT, ACCESS TO COUNSEL ACT<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n Adopting the NO BAN Act would:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Explicitly ban religious discrimination\u00a0in visa and immigration decisions under the Immigration and Nationality Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Limit national origin-based travel bans\u00a0by requiring the president to meet strict legal standards, including:<\/span><\/p>\n A compelling government interest,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Credible, specific evidence,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Consultation with Congress, and<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Public reporting and time limits on restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Passing the Access to Counsel Act would:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Guarantee that individuals detained by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for more than an hour at ports of entry\u2014including airports\u2014can consult with an attorney or legal advocate.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Prevent rights violations and abuses like those seen during the original 2017 Muslim Ban rollout.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Together, these bills would place critical legal guardrails on the executive branch\u2019s immigration powers and protect the civil liberties of immigrants, travelers, and their families.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Why Now?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n On June 4, President Trump issued a new travel ban proclamation\u00a0titled:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><\/span>Restricting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the United States From Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>The order targets 19 mostly Muslim and African nations\u00a0and threatens vague ideological screening tests that could be used to exclude immigrants based on their political or religious views.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The ban:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Fully suspends\u00a0new immigrants and new travelers from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Partially suspends\u00a0new entry from seven additional countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, Laos, and Sierra Leone.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Applies only to individuals who are\u00a0outside the U.S. on June 9\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>do not already have a valid visa.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n This ban risks:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Separating families, especially by blocking aunts, uncles, and other close relatives\u00a0from reuniting with loved ones in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Blocking students and patients\u00a0from accessing educational and medical opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Chilling dissent and activism\u00a0through the threat of ideological screening.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n CAIR strongly urges anyone who experiences or witnesses harassment or civil rights violations linked to this ban to\u00a0<\/span>immediately report incidents to CAIR\u2019s Civil Rights Department via the Report an Incident form<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n For more information about read CAIR\u2019s guidance: \u201c<\/span>What You Need to Know About Trump\u2019s New Travel Ban Order<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n END<\/span><\/p>\n CONTACT:\u00a0CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper, 202-744-7726,\u00a0<\/span>ihooper@cair.com<\/span><\/a>; CAIR National Communications Manager Ismail Allison, 202-770-6280,\u00a0<\/span>iallison@cair.com<\/span><\/a>;\u00a0\u00a0CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw, 202-742-6448,\u00a0<\/span>rmccaw@cair.com<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
